I don't know much about new zealand, but Canadian prime ministers have a lot more power than the US president. US Presidents require their appointments to be approved by Congress, specifically the Senate. In Canada, the Prime minister's appointments do not require any vote of approval. He might not get too crazy because of the next election, but still has the absolute power of appointments. One such appointment is the governor-general who picks the Prime Minister in times of political uncertainty and unrest.
Actually countries like china and Italy aren't very old. China isn't even 100 years old. The civilizations and the people like Chinese and Italians did exist but those countries didn't. China was a monarchy before then and went through a civil war with deaths in the 10s of million to even set up a country. So setting up a country is hard. And sure America is still not very old. So is most of Africa, much of Asia. But their civilizations or people have existed for a very long time.
While I can agree that Italy isn't that old, as it was being unified at the same time as Germany, China definitely is old. The Mandate of Heaven concept has always been the thing that told the Chinese people "even if there is a civil war and then new people in charge, this is still China." This is why the Mongols taking over China doesn't change the name, the Mongols are just the new holders of the Mandate of Heaven. The communist movement is just another holder of the Mandate of Heaven, and also happens to be a form of government that is much harder to get rid of once in place due to their economic structure.
