  • Another aspen! The only other one in North America - bigtooth aspen, Populus grandidentata. Bigtooth aspen is very similar to quaking aspen, to the point that the two species hybridize readily. However, P. grandidentata has different life history strategies which result in it being found in different forest assemblages than quaking aspen across its range, our lovely forests of eastern North America.

    Forests for the Bay has been funded by the US Forest Service for many years, and has allowed us to educate countless people on trees and their myriad benefits. Tree Talk is an extemporaneous lesson by Ryan Davis, recorded opportunistically by his wife Allyson while out and about in the landscapes they love. He sometimes gets things wrong because he's just speaking from memory, and the pop-ups and fact checks come from two sources: the US Forest Service Southern Research Station's accounts of the species at hand, and the 5th edition of North American Trees by Dr. Richard Preston Jr. and Dr. Richard Braham (Ryan's college dendrology professor) of North Carolina State University.
    Recorded on 7/1/23 in Wyoming County Pennsylvania by Allyson Davis, who at 8 months pregnant could barely fit in her boot, seen at 5:11.

    I have a big one on the side of our hill here in southern Indiana. Very pretty tree. I’ve seen these trees snap in half like a toothpick from strong winds

    Thank you so much for this video. I have a dendrology quiz tomorrow and this is one of the trees on the quiz and this video was incredibly helpful in giving me more tips on how to id this tree! All of your videos are so helpful, and you explain things so well and in a very fun, interesting way. Again thank you so much!!

    Again, thank you. Great video as usual. I've recently found 2 bigtooth aspen on our land, both and the edge of the woodland and a hayfield. Nice to have them. Deer browse is a problem . Nothing seems to get over a few inches before the hairy mowers come along and eat them. But I think i'll start adding in some deer exclusion areas in a year or two. See what pops up. Again, thanks for the video. These are always very informative!

      Thank you, glad it's helpful! Deer exclusion areas are almost always a good idea!

    Apparently the red coloured leaves are due to cooler soil temperatures, we see plenty like that in Northern Ontario

      Very cool, I'm so glad I now know that! One more reason for me to try to get up there someday

    Back to back aspens! Will you do a hickory episode in the future?

    • @forestsforthebay4784
      @forestsforthebay4784  8 месяцев назад

      I will eventually! Hickories are tricky because the leaves are compound and thus harder to show in winter, but winter is when I have the most time to record new Tree Talks!

    Could you help me identify this big ass tree I found in the woods? I believe it might be a basswood that whoever cleared the area a couple hundred years ago left alone.

    Is a mulberry tree and pear tree related?

    • @forestsforthebay4784
      @forestsforthebay4784  8 месяцев назад

      Nope! Aspen is in Salicaceae, the willow family, while mulberry is in Moraceae, the mulberry family, and pear is in Rosaceae, the rose family.
