I was so proud of him. But I really believe the sugar got him in the end. He had a sweet tooth like no other but was slim. I think he might not have needed medication if he could have kicked sugar. We were at a dedication ceremony for an historic house. The DAR (from elsewhere) had provided a spectacular table of refreshments - every single one with sugar as the primary ingredient. Those in attendance were high-achieving/high-class/rail-thin/gym-toned, and nobody was even glancing at that table (it's that kind of town - with the same Human Development Index rating as Atherton, Sagaponack and Greenwich ). It was a shame, that the DAR ladies' hard work was being ignored. Then along came the wife of a colleague. The colleague has depression issues. His wife has a whole constellation of anxiety issues. Their daughters are problems, in a multitude of ways, including diagnosed bipolar disorder and substance abuse. Their extra-crazy daughter is proudly Vegan, and becomes hysterical when other foodways are suggested. We were conferring, inside, and in came the wife, with a plate heaped with brownies, divinity, cookies.... "I couldn't let this go to waste!" Of all the people there, SHE would be the one to glom-onto those sweets. I think I see the root of that family's problems.

@@megaswenson That used to be me. I was raised up with garbage food and loads of sweets. I had no self control when it came to sweets, and in fact I would wake out of a dead sleep craving them. My mom ate a diet heavy in diet coke and Twizzlers up until she died at 60. I was diagnosed with bipolar in 2002 and have especially struggled with anxiety and depression. I likely would have never suspected my diet as the culprit. But I started having physical issues, including really severe bloating, along with many other digestive issues, and I had been suffering for years. I had started eating "healthy" and nothing was improving. It wasn't until my A1C hit 5.6 (prediabetic is 5.7) that I learned about insulin resistance, which led me to keto. I did that for 7 months and had some improvements, but not enough, so then I went carnivore. That was a year ago and my life has changed. But again, I would have never connected my diet to my mental issues if I hadn't accidently found the connection on my own.

I'm not bipolar, but I've had severe depression since I was 12 (I'm 21 now). I tried everything to make it go away.I was exercising between 3-6 hours a day. Took omega 3 and vitamin d supplements, forced myself into social situations, etc... Nothing worked. It got worse and worse to the point I couldn't take it anymore and tried to overdose. Luckily, I survived. I ended up spending a few weeks in a psych ward, and was put on antidepressants. The medication helped, but I always felt the depression lingering in the background.
Fast forward a few months,I went carnivore to try and lose a few kg's. After about 3 days, every time i took my antidepressants, I would get this weird neurological feeling in my brain about an hour later. I decided to stop, and lo and behold, I was no longer depressed. In fact,my mood is the best it's been in my entire life.
What's interesting is, I went on amoxicillin not long ago, and the entire time I was on it, my depression returned. I definitely think because of this, the source of my depression was to do with the microbiome.

I was told bipolar runs in families when my dad, my young daughter, and I were diagnosed in the 1990s. We were all placed on several psych meds for years with no improvement & lots of debilitating side effects. My daughter and I got off these meds but now have other chronic issues. Two years ago, I discovered thru a Functional Medicine Dr that she & I have 2 copies of the MTHFR gene mutation, which reduces our ability to absorb B vitamins. There was a good chance my father had it as well. I went on a Keto diet plan and improved. Now I am on a carnivore diet, and even my chronic inflammatory issues- Hashimoto's, NAFLD, Sleep Apnea, and Gluten-Sensitivity have resolved. I have also reduced my chiropractor visits from a 40 yrs old injury to once a month instead of 1-2x per week.
Carnivore has given me my life back.

I’ve gone from 5 psych meds to ONE! And that one is a minimum dose! I am so greatful that I found this way of eating!! I hope more and more people find this diet because mental health symptoms are a HORRIBLE way to live! THANK YOU DR. BERRY!!!

Nobody even today tells you to stop eating sugar. And, carbs are told to be as important as protein. Nobody dares to claim that carbs are useless let alone harmful nutrition. I've been diagnosed bipolar 15 years ago and the only thing that I feel truly works for overall mood stability and understanding how to deal with your mood changes is combining carnivore diet with CBT. Medication either did not help or just flat out made shit worse with all the debilitating side effects. For me, zero inflammatory plant foods and lots of fatty meat seems to be the answer. It's like I'm allergic to all plants and reaction comes in the form of bipolar symptoms.

Thank you, Dr Berry, for this timely info on bipolar disorder. FYI, I have only yesterday celebrated the birthday of Jack Lalanne, who as you know was one of the first Hollywood celebrities to identify sugar consumption as detrimental to human health. Each year I observe 26 September as Sugar Addicts’ Day (acronym SAD), by trying to honour the sugar junkies in my life. Every one of these now-deceased people deserved to enjoy the PHD and its benefits, as indeed we all do. Anyway, Happy SAD! 😢😂🎉... and have a fun week on the family farm,🙏🖖👍🏽👏🏼

When I learned that the keto diet began in the early 20th century I wondered if it would benefit my adult son, who is disabled by schizophrenia. He lives with me and I am his caregiver. Sure enough, he felt better. It wasn't a cure, God knows, and I never expected it to be, but his thinking and mood did improve. His MD and therapist were impressed as well.

I was diagnosed as bipolar too. I spent the last year in a primarily devastating Lee deep pit of depression. For months I could barely get out of bed. My herbalist suggested that I start taking twice the recommended dose of a high-quality fish oil every day, 8 tons of avocados, vitamin D, and a B complex supplement. It was amazing! Those changes in my diet alone have done incredible things for my mental health. I’m not completely cured or anything like that, but the improvement has been significant! I am now working on re-balancing my gut health, cutting out processed foods and incorporating more gut friendly practices. I am not keto. I do not eat red meat. I’ve tried keto before and quickly got very sick of eating nothing but butter and avocados every day! It does not work for me. That being said, I know it does work for some people but if you’re not ready to go for keto, or it does not appeal to you, at least try the supplements mentioned.

I’m bipolar 1 and low carb for 5 years felt not much different as I had so many food intolerances and allergies but carnivore has made my mood disorder stable . I also have been off all my medications for 6 years now-pure poison and I do blame a lot of those medications for a ton of health issues and insuring problems I have today with my overall health but I’m healing now ! Think better , not in constant brain inflammation. I do think bipolar is basically brain inflammation!

The sufferings of the psychotropic side effects were far greater than my actual illness. Bipolar I w/Psychotic Features. I went from 3 years of psychotropic cocktails to 6+ months of supplements and vitamins…but I have a shit diet. I’m really looking forward to giving this a try. Thank you. 🥺

      @@kylesmith9029
      Currently
      Mood stabilizer…
      Lithium Orotate 120mg tabs (4x morning + 4x bedtime) = 960mg
      Sleep aid…
Benadryl 50mg (sometimes 75mg) for sleep to prevent insomnia = mania = psychosis
      Antidepressant…
5-HTP Plus 200mg (only 1 capsule as needed…recommended dosage overpowers my lithium… caused ultra rapid cycling)
That antidepressant can cause nausea and abdominal pain sometimes… I take a total gut complex probiotic with it… I don’t feel pain the next day.
One drink of caffeine… I get mixed episodes. Getting more strict on that part of the diet to start at least. Self-discipline is a bitch.
      Hope that helps somehow!

@@remmy908 I was taking OTC lithium Orotate at the time, I’ve never had prescription Lithium carbonate (I’ve heard the OTC version is metabolized differently but maybe im wrong)
I’m currently doing mono therapy with Depakote ER though. Maybe someday I can stick with a good diet but today ain’t the day. Working towards it here and there.
Yeah it sucks that my liver is at risk with depakote, but this is life at the moment. I’m just grateful I’m not in and out of the hospital, and not feeling akathisia or tardive dyskinesia or anything else anymore. 🤍

Dr. Bery, I have been binge watching you since I found you! I have a mentally challenged daughter with bipolar disorder. I am definitely going to follow this plan. It really makes sense! I'm 71, the primary care giver for my daughter and my 89 years old mother. I have been going through some crazy health issues that have left me almost paralyzed and in extreme pain. I recently had to go to the hospital via ambulance. It was a terrible experience that left me in the same condition. I am asking you if you are willing to conduct a telephone meeting with me to see if you can help me. I'm more than willing to pay for your time and help. God Bless you for sharing your knowledge with us all.

Undoubtedly, the dietary advice would be worthwhile for anyone diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, the addiction to sugar, grains, the habit of eating seed oil products such as margarine and mayonnaise, along with the need for medical attention, prescription drugs, and a certain quality of social involvement in which all these addictions, habits, and attentional needs are intertwined, make it extremely difficult for most bipolar-challenged people to take this advice. However, a few rare ones will benefit from this video, which is great.

I believe that low carb/keto/carnivore is effective for a host of mental health and auto-immune conditions. I was on prozac from 2011 to early 2020 when I went keto (I'd been doing IF for about a year and a half by then) and within a few months of being on a ketogenic diet my prozac was actually giving me really painful headaches so I weaned myself off it over a month or two and have been off it ever since.

Yep, Bipolar in remission for almost 7 yrs thanks to keto diet. Medication, worked but the side effects were intolerable. Keto works better and the side effect are that I've also put chronic pain into remission, I've stopped experiencing reactive hypoglycemia and I get slightly dryer skin (only negative side effect and a bit of ghee goes a long way to solve this issue).
