I think the minimalistic style is fantastic. I think you're representing it very well. And I hope more hobbyist's find this particularly style as a entry point into keeping marine tanks.
Both soft corals and macro algae are indeed a lower cost, lower maintenance, and more approachable form of reef keeping over stony corals. I wish you the best with attracting a large following.
However, speaking for myself only, this style went out the door the moment I fell in love with SPS corals. I still find it extremely appealing. But, I know I would not be able to keep some of my corals alive without that extra automation. It's a compromise to keep the livestock I'm most interested in. Meaning, your approach will not be for everyone. Yet, I still hope you'er successful in getting numerous others to adopt it.

Whereas I understand the equipment for sumps, skimmers, dosing, ATO, crazy lighting, refugium, half dozen wave makers alternating flow, and just about anything else you can add, I really really don't want to deal with that for a couple corals and a couple clownfish. I will be jumping into the saltwater side very soon, but am going to start with as little as possible since I spent so much on my planted tanks already and also want to keep the maintenance issues to a minimum. Loved seeing this setup and the simplicity. Thanks!!

Im also a fresh to salt convert and after I spent a few hundred dollars and many fails trying to do a budget setup I ended up upgrading to a 20gal with sump for two clowns and a few corals( trust me it's hard to stop at 2) before I could get everything to run smoothly . It's best to go speak to a few reef shops to find out what your options are within your budget and get a feeling of which shops are good. Best not too start too cheap in my experience just sharing so you don't go thru the same setup hell as I did.

      Thank you!
I think that’s a great way to approach it. Buy and add things as you go! I feel that sometimes when there’s too much going on, it can actually cause issues. Stable salinity and heat, good flow and lighting, you should be good! Especially for a pair of clowns and a couple pieces of coral like you said

Also very good advice! I agree with not going too cheap in the beginning. Sometimes having cheap equipment can turn out faulty or ineffective. There’s always the option to buy nice used equipment for good prices! A 20 gallon AIO used on marketplace can be cheaper than some brand new “kit” tanks at petco.

There is a gradual shift in the community going back to simple styles of reefing. I personally believe in just a skimmer and fuge. Other things may help but not neccessary :D

I agree with that! I’m hoping to see some more low tech reef tanks

I completely agree with you! My tank is also minimalistic with no skimmer, no dosing, no feeding (no fish) and cleaning crew + macro algea doing a good job. I just have to top up RO water from time to time.
It's a real pleasure to create the tank and then just let it live its life, almost like being a father to child 😂

Pretty much the same exact regimen as me! It’s really nice to be able to do little to the tanks and still look at something nice 😂
