Thanks a ton! Was able to fix my DC jack without replacing it using this video. One solder point had disconnected from it's solder point. I just heated it up, removed old solder, and applied new. Boom!
My homie bought a 414 a couple of weeks ago after he found some of our old recordings from bacc in 1998. He knocked it over a couple of days ago and no power. I am assuming he has this problem or similar... She is about to see the doctor on Monday. Hope we get her repaired and can go on remixing those terrible mixes and digitally remaster them... Great video
Usually only models powered by internal AC to DC transformers have internal fuses, e.g. 244, 464. If you're not getting power on your 424 mk I id check the condition of the solder connections at the base of the power input socket. If those are okay, it's possible someone tried to use the wrong external ac to dc adapter, in which case you might haven't replace at most a dozen capacitors diodes etc that were hurt by incorrect voltage polarity.
Hi, I need help on this tasma 414, I have a strange issue, the unit has power, track panel side , but the tape player has no power, any where I should check on the board ? Capacitor any regulator?
Have you ran into a problem similar to this with a 424 mkiii where a little movement makes it cut off and on? If so have you ever worked on one? Thanks
Hi!... My Tascam Porta 05 does not turn on anymore; I've opened it and very briefly checked the connection, which doesn't seem to be damaged (but I could be wrong)... Do you think that the problem explained in the video could happen also in the Porta 05 or, considering the differences, there are more chances that the cause is different?...
Hi @@Tetrakan !... Sorry to bother you again, but I've got some news on my old Porta 05: I've finally bought a multimeter and discovered that the power adapter is dead... I also checked the continuity of the input connection and that, instead, is not broken... Good, it seems that I only need to buy a new adapter (and maybe change the belts)... But there's a problem: before doing all these things (and even before writing to you the first time), I tried two different adapters (both with 12v output; one with 3a and the other with 1a), but with the wrong polarity!.. Yes, I know, dumb thing to do... Anyway, nothing happened (the unit did not even turn on), so I'am thinking that there's a chance I've been lucky (maybe some protection kicked in?)... What do you think, could I have broken the recorder or, if that was the case, something "noticeable" should have happened? I ask because I don't think I can return the adapter if I buy it, so, if you tell me that I've SURELY damaged the Tascam, I'll simply avoid to buy the adapter... Many thanks again!...
Just wanted to give an update (for everyone reading): Even after trying two power adapters with the wrong polarity, once I managed to repair my original adapter (with the help from a friend) the Porta 05 turned on, and worked again normally... It seems that the Porta 05 has some kind of protection against the wrong polarity (but it is still wise to avoid such a thing, because that protection could have its limits)... Regarding the original power adapter: I only had to replace the wire (the one that goes from the adapter to the Tascam)... Hope to be of help!...
I have a power problem on 414 mkii. It just cut out mid recording and won’t turn on now. I have opened it up and the dc Jack seems secure. The large capacitor seems to have leaked. What capacitor would you recommend to replace it?
Be aware it might be just glue to keep the capacitor in place, typically glue is opaque and a pale beige/brown colour. If you do replace the capacitor, it is very important that you buy the same capacitance value and voltage tolerance, I'm pretty sure thats going to be 4700uf and 25 volts on your unit, but check the writing on the side of the capacitor you remove. If you mean brand, I tend to use panasonic and nichicon...less expensive than rubycons but generally better availability and still have a reputation of being more reliable than some cheaper brands.
my 424 just failed to turn on after months of sitting after working just fine... I opened it and looked at the OUT board and I did notice that one particular solder seemed to be missing half of it leaving a half circle.. but the component leg still seemed to be in place ... it wasnt loose .... I have to go back and look again for swollen capacitors and loose legs on the power switch and AC jack... sheesh...
@@Tetrakan thanks. I just watched a bunch of your videos looking for the one showing where the fuse is. Finally found and watched it. Never soldered before but I'm gonna go for it. ... Thinking about the fuse in the ac plug I looked at the plug I've been usjng. Its an adjustable voltage one from radio shack. I plugged it into my mpc Live and it didn't show the little lightning bolt inside the battery icon but the mpc plus does. I'm certain the RS plug works though. Either way. I need to buy multimeter and test things. I'll probly post later my results. Thanks for your info
Do you do repairs for other people? I have a 424 mki that I believe is having this issue and I’m thinking about having someone fix it for me because I’ve never done the soldering like in your video.
Sorry for late reply, your comment ended up in my spam folder for no reason. I'm, pretty busy atm, and you'd have to be in the UK anyway...if you're not up to the soldering (I was initimidated the first time but honestly its not a big deal once you take theplunge) tell me where you are and maybe I have a contact who can help?
I have a portastudio that wont power up, but the power socket appears to be solid, and nothing inside appears damaged in any way, in fact it looks brand new, no leaking caps or anything. does the unit have a fuse anywhere?
I just got a portastudio 414 mk2 from a guy off craigslist and I tested it at his house and it worked. I went home and plugged in my synth and started recording fine. then out of no where the thing stopped and will not power back on.

Great, have fun recording 😀
Thanks for posting this. I was able to revive my old Tascam 414 from the dead using the technique you showed in the video.
Thank you! This was exactly what I needed!

I have the same problem with a dp 02 hoping it’s just as easy to fix. I think the part is in the unit. Got ruffed up shipping from musicians friend.
Off the top of your head, do you know how this process would compare on the 424 mki? I’ve looked for fuses as well but can’t seem to find any.

Yes. It’s a different style of socket but same principal applies, check the solder pads at the base of the socket and add fresh solder as necessary
@@Tetrakan ok thanks I appreciate it

Same problem is the most likely cause. I'd say eliminate that possibility before looking for more complicated causes.
@@Tetrakan I'll check better the connection then...
Thank you very much!...

Hey, I've got the portastudio 424 at home. Only I've lost the power cable. Is there any change I could replace it? If yes, what should I get?
Yes. You want a 12v negative tip AC to DC adapter, 500mA or higher. Myvolts sell these in europe, the rest of the world, I'm not sure.

I’d definitely reflow solder around the half circle you describe….good luck!

Check fuses?
@@Tetrakan Have not yet I got it an hour ago. worked. came home pluged it in. havent opened it up yet. Where are the fuses on it?
go to my channel homepage, electrical troubleshooting playlist, there's a video about testing fuses, demonstrated on a mk II
Scotty from Star Trek! so smart thanks! I go porta1 trying to fix
I've giv'n her all she's got captain, an' I canna give her no more.
any link to schematic?
