    I wonder whether this guy knows how good and talented he is at explaining complex stuff. I was shocked that I understood half of it...and I have no formal RF antenna training. Just a baseband analog and digital guy. Bravo for such an excellent tutorial !!!

    This is unbelievable! i have cracked my head reading useless books to understand patch antenna.I must confess that you have put me out of my misery.i tried designing one using CST Microwave studio but i did'nt understand the concepts,now i am going back to the lab.I like the way you explained the fringing effect and how it gives rise to the radiation in the patch.you killed it man!

      ANYTHING to do with self-resonant antenna structures will be dealing with either 1/4 wavelength or 1/2 wavelength lengths along the length and width. Understand this and half the battle is won.

    thanks for your bravo explanation. I have no knowledge about antenna, but you make it simple and easy to understand.

    If the tx line is short (less than a tenth of a wavelength), then the antenna measured at the end of the tx line is about the same as the antenna.
    If the microstrip line is long, then you need to factor it in. It rotates the impedance around the Smith Chart. The only shortcut is if you have a 50 Ohm antenna and a 50 Ohm tx line, then the length of the line doesnt matter & the input impedance remains 50 Ohms.
    The equations are in the tx line tutorial section of the antenna website.

    @SeriousTyro You can put a matching network in there if you would like. Another method is to use a quarter-wavelength transmission line.

    WHAT part does the dielectric under the patch play? Is the 1/2 wavelength of the patch a
    half Lambda *under* the patch (in the dielectric), or in air *over* the patch?

    Thank you very much for this!
    I couldn't understand much before watching your lecture.
    There's just one thing making me wonder: according to Carver and Mink in Microstrip Antenna Technology, the input impedance of a rectangular microstrip antenna with no advance on the feedpoint should be of 120 ohms, not 400 as it is said in the video. I am just starting to understand anything about microstrip antennas, so I don't know who's right here.

    It was mentioned that there was a high input impedance to the patch antenna so there would be quite a bit of reflection.
    Would you put a matching network between the transmission line and the antenna?

    so what components do I need ot build a mircostrip anntenna; as I thought an alterantive wave passed thrugh a cold of wire is what makes an antenna.
    But thats justa magnetic wave; but is there a way to create a crystal atenna?

    if (in air) L= lambda/2, then (according to the picture) W > lambda/2....then why do you take the gain of "short dipole", if it's longer than half wave dipole, and must add gain of 2-2.15 db. am i wrong?

  • @CAM3322Mr

    There is the theory of Reciprocity...what is on my mind is what if instead I have an incoming EM wave I would think that the voltage signs would be opposite on the patch given the same feed? Also, instead replace the t-line feed with a probe feed, what does the E-field or fringing field or voltage potential look like then? Moreover, if I increase the distance of the GND away from the patch because of multiple layers do I essentially reduce the fringing fields? If so, what is the consequence of this?

    • @paulkazjack
      @paulkazjack 9 лет назад

      Corey Bergsrud Yes you do. do not increase the distance. Go easy with the feed.

    Thank you for this video on analysis of patch antenna.
    Could you please tell me when the same patch antenna is modified to have any fractal shape at its outer edge(may be square cut), how the analysis may be done?
    Is there empirical formulae for the planar fractal antenna design and analysis?

    Can we not feed the antenna along the L side and not the W side. What will happen then?

    • @JonathanAdami
      @JonathanAdami 6 лет назад

      Intuitively I'd say: "it's like decreasing W and increasing L" so: Impedance increased and resonant frequency decreased? Just guessing here
