      So this kind of reminds me of my childhood in a catholic household.. don't judge yet! Purgatory, I learned, is where everyone has to go to pay for sins, big or small. Everyone has to feel the pain they caused others, 10 fold. So the worse you are, the worse the pain and length of time in purgatory. I find comfort in believing in that small thing, haha.

    TIPS for DUMP CAKES. 1-Two cans of Pie filling always. 2- Don’t melt butter just chop two cold sticks up in squares and cover evenly on top the butter slowly melts and covers all the dry cake mix. 3- Set oven to 350 degrees and cook for an hour makes the cake golden brown. At least that’s what my Nana use to do and taught me to do. Dump cakes are a Big hit at any pot luck or social gathering. Love your Videos Jonny 😁

    Fun Fact! Cake mixes used to include everything required (including powdered eggs) and only required water to be added, but home cooks felt like they were "cheating" by not doing something, so the manufacturers made the mixes to require eggs and oil, they sold much better.

      What ingredient would be the powdered egg? Because my cake mixes I buy don't include powdered egg or any egg product that I'm aware of. And we have an egg allergy in my house so I'm reading the labels constantly. And where I live, any allergens must legally be listed underneath the ingredients and there is nothing about eggs.

    • @xingcat
      @xingcat 5 days ago +2

      @alishacoombes8476 They don't include them anymore because consumers didn't feel like it was "baking" if you didn't add things like eggs and oil. (The way I worded it above might have been read in the opposite way, apologies.)

    Explaining canning: it all started back in the day with Napoleon - no joke. There was a need to make military rations, food for deployed soldiers. Years later, with the availability of the mason jar, regular folks could preserve their harvested items to have food available in the cold or cropless months as well as out of season. Food history is fun ❤

    1:27 Actually, when cake mixes became popular, people actually disliked that they didn't have ENOUGH to do with the actual "making" of the cake. Hence, recipes like dump cake became a thing because with the addition of ingredients not included in the box, people felt they were contributing more to a "real" homemade cake. Boxed cake mixes really became fully accepted once they introduced the at home consumers to the idea of eloborately decorating their box cake with frosting and toppings etc to put the idea that they didn't work hard enough on the cake itself to rest.

      Yes I've heard this is also why they made cake mix and pancake mix with the need for added eggs and a fat because people didn't trust just adding water to a powder. As my mother once said while watching her new bread maker work "but where's the looooove!?"

    • @mikkifine
      @mikkifine Month ago +5

      One of those things that shows how fucking weird people are. If you don't like boxed cake because it doesn't feel homemade enough, just don't use it 😂 why go through the effort of buying a convenience product to then deconvenience it.

    I baked soda cakes with my mom growing up- but we didn’t use just soda. We replaced the water that the box cake called for with the soda; we still used the eggs and butter or whatever else was in the recipe too. We did yellow cake and Sprite. I don’t know if it was actually good but I remember it being good 🤷🏽‍♀️

      When I was homeless, soda bread (with actual soda) was such a lifesaver. I would go to the dollar store and get a liter of soda, a bag of self-rising flour, and a three pack of loaf pans and could make 6 loaves of bread for $3. We'd cook them on "stoves" made out of shopping carts and they were actually delicious. Dr. Pepper bread was my favorite, followed by Sprite.

    best way to handle the butter for a dump cake is to THINLY slice it all and then place them evenly across the entire top of the cake...if you make it thin enough, you will pretty much cover the entire top of the pan, and it ALL bakes up without any issues.

    I went through a pre-TikTok phase of making cake mix into cookie dough that were much more like the dump cake: a shortcut. It was usually either just add butter, or just add Cool Whip, mix to dough, form into cookie shape or pat into a pan, bake. They weren't cute or fancy, but they were cookies.

    Fun fact! The heat of the oven will have cooked any of the raw cake mix in a dump cake since it stays in there a good while, so it's safe to eat even if it doesn't look like it!
    You can do the same thing with flour by cooking it on the stovetop for a bit, so you have edible flour even if it looks raw.

Then I frost with pudding mix, a cup of milk, brick of cream cheese and a tub of cool whip. Add powdered sugar if needed for consistency and a splash of vanilla if desired.. everyone raves about how delicious and moist it is.
