- This material is of historical interest and has been uploaded for purposes of scholarship and research. It was broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation "Nationwide" program on 2 May 1983. The wide comb dispute is analysed in detail in "Mateship and Moneymaking: Australian Shearing: The clash of union solidarity with the spirit of enterprise 1895-1991" by Rory O'Malley, Xlibris, 2013. This television incident is mentioned on p22-23.
This whole dispute was absolutely ridiculous. It was pure jealousy plain & simple, I would love to talk to those same opponents of the wide comb today & say remember when you assaulted all those innocent people for using them & said that it was going to destroy the industry? But the industry hasn't missed a beat since & has only gotten stronger because of it. You really saw the evil coming out of these people during that time from the bottom to the top absolutely wicked & deplorable behavior, shameful treatment of hard working innocent people.
Exactly. Dad was a shearer in the 70’s and 80s and got caught up in this drama. Was a wide comb user and copped the scab label. He still to this day wishes he could catch up with a few of those blokes now and give them an earful ( and maybe a bit more) for the amount of shit they use to dish out.
The stupid unions were stubborn. The fact that you could earn a lot more shearing with a wide comb.
''Jist use your teeth.'' it will save you all a Pretty Penny.''
