  • I'm prepping an ammonite from the green ammonite bed from Stonebarrow, Charmouth. I've tried to include as much of my thoughts as possible in an attempt to hopefully impart some fossil prep wisdom. Production and sound are a bit whack so apologies :)

    Good teaching not bad at all! 😊 Do the air scribe o rings get worn out quicker if you're using it at a shallow angle and putting the pressure on the side of the tip?

    • @TheFossilAcademy
      @TheFossilAcademy  Год назад +1

      To be fair I think I could do with some new o rings, my pen is a bit of a joke with my good friend James, he doesn’t understand how I use it as it’s really beat up, I’ve probably changed the o rings once or twice in over ten years! Still going strong though!

    Nice one Dan. I'd like to do some of that time laps on an ammonite I am prepping. Not sure how to go about it. Only have a basic samsung phone camera and a tripod. When I try to show how my airpen exposes the fossil. The camera is always in the way. Anyway buddy nice ammonite look forward to seeing the finished job.👍

      I use a go pro 8, it’s got a really nice Timelapse setting and just mount it above my workbench with a bendy wire with a claw on both ends. Really nice bit of kit to be fair, the steady function on it is brilliant too.

  • @finbar481

    Great job! Looks really nice. I'm interested at having a go at prepping a few of these, only as a hobby as I'm quite new to the fossil bug. What are the pens you are using? Are they easy to get hold of and where would I get them? Also what is the box for that's behind you? Great channel, I love your work!

    • @TheFossilAcademy
      @TheFossilAcademy  Год назад +2

      The air scribe I use is a Chicago pneumatic CP9361 stock with modification to the carbide point (just sharpened to a point using a diamond belt) and I’ve knocked the tip support ring off with a hammer and ground it down so it’s a little bit more ergonomic. Check out Zoic Paleotech online if you’re in the uk, loads of info on tools there, something for every budget, the starter electric pen is good if you want to play about for minimum cost, gets really expensive with the pro air tools and abrasive machines. The box behind is my air abrasive cabinet, plumbed up to the extractor. Making a new one soon.

    Nice ammonite i have a couple fire ammonites and one polished one . How much is something like that go for.

    • @TheFossilAcademy
      @TheFossilAcademy  Год назад

      Cheers Michael, that ammonite I’d say would go for around £180-200, i think a fair price would be a little cheaper but having the video of the clean bumps it up a little. I think prices of fossils are quite subjective as each piece is a one off, you have to factor in the collecting, cleaning, tool wear, abrasive powders, time. It’s why I find it hard to price fossils, I’ll always consult numerous sources and ask my friends what they think before setting a price in stone, it needs to be a fair price for both parties.

    What tool do you use to clean off the stone? I mean what electric tool do you use to prep it?

    • @TheFossilAcademy
      @TheFossilAcademy  7 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry man totally missed this question, the electric engraver Ive used on the channel is a Dremel engraver with handmade fossil points from Zoic paleo tech. The main fossil pen I use is a Chicago pneumatic CP9361 engraver which has a modified front end (whacked the collar off the top and ground it around to make it more ergonomic with a diamond belt) if you want to get some info on fossil tools Zoic online do some awesome gear and their website has some brilliant info on it. Just type Zoic fossil tools in google and you’ll find it. Once again sorry for the late reply. Dan
      Forgot to say the CP 9361 is an air engraver so you’ll need a decent compressor to run one. The Zoic pens run on a much lower air consumption and aren’t as air hungry as the Chicago pens.

    Hey i found a section of a turtle in a stone at the beach, i believe from what ive removed so far its the head and 1 or maybe both front legs ive go as much as i feel comfortable a its getting tricky with just a regular dremel. Do you have any advice as i dont have a clue what im doing and im worried about all the tiny bone pieces, super anxious as its a new hobby for me and my boy and that was our first haul which im buzzing about as we have a turtle ourselves lol

    What is the best air pen to use is a Dremel ok to use or do I need a compressor

    • @TheFossilAcademy
      @TheFossilAcademy  Год назад

      Check out my electric engraver v air scribe video, if you are just starting out an electric engraver from Zoic paleotech with the custom made fossil tips is a good start for a cheap price, if you decide you really like it and want to progress and go down the air scribe route it can quickly become very expensive, pens, compressor, air dryers and abrasive machines all add up. I’d say an electric pen to start, you have to take more regular breaks with it though and you also don’t have constant air pushing out the front of it clearing away the dust and rock chips like you do with an air scribe which can hinder you a little when doing detail work.
