It’s interesting to see how arbitrary it is whether antennas/spires as counted. Some of the spires that count as part of the height are barely viable, while for other towers like the John Hancock they are not

There's a reason why the new One WTC is taller than the old One WTC. The new One WTC (1,776 feet) features a spire while the old One WTC (1,368 feet) had an antenna. Spires are part of the design of the building which extends its height from the roof. An antenna is an additional feature and can be removed. The new One WTC features a spire in its previous designs. The old One WTC didn't have a spire nor antenna in its original design and the antenna was only added in 1979. If the antenna of the old One WTC was included in its official height, it would reach 1,728 feet as the antenna mast has a height of 360 feet.

Still don't understand how floors don't beat spires. That seems far more crucial and Nordstrom tower would be the tallest of Sears and WordTcentre2.

A reason why CTBUH exists. The height of tall buildings as categorized into many criterias. Tallest by habitable/occupied floors, tallest by architectural tip (spire/antenna), tallest by pinnacle height (spire), and tallest by roof height.

The original design for the Burj Khalifa was originally going to be built in Long Island. If 911 hadn't happened. It would have been very likely that the tallest building in the world currently would have been built In New York. But architects and American city planners became nervous after the attack.
