Wow. I was just having this conversation with someone who said I wasn't an actress. Just because I'm not in play, movie, or tv show does not mean I'm not an actress. I study Uta Hagen and Meisner. I do the text work on plays I read even if I'm not in them. I enjoy doing the WORK of an actress so I believe that makes me an actress. Great interview!

I tried to tell someone this on the writing subreddit. They were trying to say that they disapproved of young people who commit to trying to be a writer while they are young, citing that most writers spend decades writing before they get noticed and can profit from their work.
I understand that they are trying to look out for a kids future, but this is the worst advice. Theres nothing to say that someone can't be good at writing very early on in their writing life. As humans we are constantly thinking, watching and learning from other people and entertainment. We write in our own thoughts, so theres no reason to think that 10 years of trying to publish writing work is needed to get good at writing.
Instead what I tried to offer as alternative advice, is that they need to have that passion for a specific project/idea/genre. Do you love a specific genre of music or film, and have been obsessed with thinking about different things/genre you can mix into your favorite genre to make it better. Then by all means make it happen and chase that dream full steam ahead. Don't just look at the life of an actor/director/writer and decide you would like to live that life, and now struggle to be creative. Something other than just wanted to be working as X, needs to drive you. Maybe you just enjoy doing it, and don't particularly care how you get work. The biggest problem is always when people try to force theirself to do something when their heart isn't in it.
Amen Mr. Cheadle. Most "actors" are just looking to be a celebrity. Actors work CONSTANTLY, anytime and anywhere.
Work on your craft and stop looking for fame.

Actors act no matter what is the stage. You go to acting class not just to learn more skills but also to ACT on material and with people. Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar and still works with his acting coach. That should still encourage the rest of all level actors to work.

As an actor you should always consider what happened to the character you play before the script begins and even consider what happens to them after the script ends. Life off the page...
There's various ways to approach preparing for a character. You don't necessarily need to know his or hers background. But knowing so can help you relate more to them as human beings and maybe that way access the characters emotions. Again so many ways to prepare for a role. As long as you're preparing, you're doing something right.

Great advice. It took me so long to realize this. True, working definitely helps your profession and fame is an added plus but it’s really about having passion for what you do. There’s much joy in performing, but even when you’re not you can always continue learning and honing your craft. It’s good to keep seeking opportunities, but even when it’s not possible or you just can’t do it anymore, if you still have a place in your heart for it, you were and always will be an actor.

Couldn't agree more with mr Cheadle. It's a very good approach to the art of acting. His words reminded me a story fom my life.
My father is a stage director by proffession, so of course from early age my older sister and me were very much into acting, we took part in school festivals and poem reciting competitions and so on. Pretty standard stuff for someone interested in sth.
When my sister graduated high school, she said that she is going to try to get into actor's school (in Poland 25 years ago graduating from a public acting school was pretty much the only way of making it in this industry) and my dad opposed this idea strongly. There were countless arguments at home. She never went to actibg school, never joined any university acting company or anything like that. She just changed her intrests.
After I graduated high school well, I didn't want a repeat of what I remebered as pretty traumatic time in my family, so I didn't try for acting school. I went to study chinese and joined an amateur acting company.
After I got my bachelor's and I was figuring out my next move my dad said: how about acting school? You are still young enough to try.
And my reaction was: Dad what the fuck? You almost burned down the house fighting with my sister about going to acting school and now you're the one to propose the idea?
And he said:
She was interested in fame, you're interested in acting.

Not a fan of Cheadle, but I believe his take on acting is so true. I myself am not an actor, and have no interest in it. But Jesus, he is so right about people HAVING to invest themselves in acting to be successful. Many young acting students think reading a script and doing some small videos is enough.

I'm not interested in being an actor and never have been - but I know people who are. You don't actually need anybody to practice ... some things. You can just sit down and do all the parts in something yourself. Just sit in your house and ... act. I was a terrible musician ... I wasn't a musician ... but ... I loved to play the drums and I could just put on a tape and play by myself.
Now - to get past a certain point - then it starts becoming important to have other people to interact with. The thing is - there are amateur theater groups everywhere. They don't get paid but they get to act. You can get together with other people and do plays in your home with them. It doesn't matter if no one is going to see them but the people doing them - it is all acting and you can get out of it what you put into it.
For the people that are really into things like this - it's like my nephew (who is a musician) says - he can't NOT do it.
The same thing with writing or anything else creative. If you love to do it - do it. Almost all of the creative people out there making something out of nothing - will NEVER get paid. Don't let that stop you from doing it.
We all have to make decisions about ... how am I going to eat ... and ... how much of my life do I want to put into this ... as opposed to something I know will make me more money. Those are real decisions but they are your decisions and only you can make them.

It's so true. Never stop the work. There is always some new level to work on and more to learn. Musicians would use the term "woodshedding". You have to keep the technique alive with practicing and learning something new while also staying relevant. While in acting or music there may not be current artist or production that inspire innovation, there are plenty in history to study. Watching interviews of the greats, checking out vintage films. live performances etc. can deepen the connection and references while also or giving one the opportunity to add something fresh and new.

I'm a vocal coach and ask singers the same question - do you want to be a star or do you want to be a singer? You can be both, if you're very lucky, but you can definitely be a singer, starting here and now. You can continue to improve & grow as an artist every day and soak in the journey and maybe you'll achieve the stardom, but if that doesn't happen, you'll at least (hopefully) have thoroughly enjoyed the journey because you did what you loved.

Being an actor has to be something you would STILL want to do, even if you NEVER became rich n famous for it. Because if it’s just about money/fame…ull eventually give up. But if it’s a part of who you are, ull NEVER stop acting, until u become a professional at it.

Don Cheadle asked the right question when someone says they want to be an actor. I took an acting class for the units when I was in college. It was taught by Duke Stroud. The first day he looked at all of us students and said "I want people in this class who want to be actors. Not stars. If you want to be a star then this class isn't for you."
Good talk. How are you preparing for the career that you want to ultimately do? This is an excellent question for any field of work, ask your kid, the answer may surprise you.

The key is to unravel the truth and inner workings of what it means to actually act, and how to respect it as an artform. Once you've unlocked the mental, spiritual, physical, and intellectual knowledge of being an actor, you can apply that to anywhere you want to or can go. Act anywhere and as much as you can. Acting is at the core of it all, not fame or fortune. If you can't act, then what's the point?
Where I'm from, I was lucky enough to get a part in a local movie and met a somewhat well known actor. He was really nice. One day, he asked me somewhere along the lines "you wanna be an actor because you wanna be famous right?"
Not once I've thought acting to become famous. We're all tools, just like crews from gaffers, wardrobes, make ups to tell a story and acting, is used to tell that story. If being famous is your goal than getting into the character, researching the character and do the work, you're not acting
I often hear that you can't call yourself an actor unless you are getting work, like, a lot. This makes my imposter syndrome skyrocket through the roof. But this video makes me feel like less of a failure.
They say there are a lot of people in Hollywood with talent. As a struggling actor for many years I thought so too as I saw many more skilled than I was. Until I had a real eye opening experience in a play I was in 20 years ago. From being in that play I discovered that actually nobody has much talent based on the performance of an actress in that play. This woman was the best actress I had ever seen. Her performance made all the academy award actresses I had ever seen in films put together look like nothing compared to this woman’s talent. We had rehearsed for months and a few days before the performance the lead actress got sick. The producers didn’t want to scrap the play so they held some quick auditions for a replacement. I was at the auditions when hundreds of actresses showed up. They were good but nothing special. One actress was given a ride by her older sister who sat watching the auditions. The director kept saying No, No you are playing an aging prostitute reflecting on the mistakes in her life. You are not believable. At a break the actress with the sister wanted to practice so she gave the script to her sister to work on it with her. It was like lightening once in a lifetime. The sister was unbelievable. Everyone, the director the producer the whole cast stopped and watched. The director asked the sister to read the lead part. She put the script down and said she didn’t need it as she had memorized it by listening to the women auditioning. She did the part cold with not having ever rehearsed it. It was unbelievable.Her acting, but it really was not acting, because she BECAME the prostitute, was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. After doing some of the lines she would stop and ask if it was ok if she did it again but change some of it because she said as written it was not how the real Lola would have responded. The writer was there and remarked she was actually improving the lines for the part. Everyone asked her how she did that. She said script only captured 80% of the character and when she acted and became the character she added the 20% that was missing to make Lola a whole person. The director immediately dismissed the other actresses auditioning for the part and said she had it. Then he said to her tell me the truth. NO actress in the entire world can do what you did without months of rehearsal but it was an original play never done before so she couldn’t have seen the script before. Everyone asked how did she do it. She said when she was 7 years old her mother took her to a broadway play. On seeing it once she memorized all the songs in it and performed them on the subway coming home. She said people clapped then asked her to do some of the speaking parts. She did the lead actress then did it again and added some lines because she said that was not what she thought the character would say. She then told everyone she went to see Sweeney Todd with her sister. She said the actress doing Mrs. Lovett was terrible and was just a funny caricature of the real Mrs. Lovett. The real person was a much darker evil person. Everyone then asked her to do Mrs. Lovett. She did and I have never been so scared in my whole life. I was afraid to turn my back on her after that because I was afraid. On the day of the performance of the play only about 20 people showed up and there was only one performance. This woman’s performance was earth shattering. All the actors and actresses in the play said they gave the best performance of their lives due to acting with her. I had some lines with her and it was the best acting I ever did in my life due to interacting with her. They said she lifted the whole company up. After the play all she could do was console her sister that she didn’t get the part. She told her sister I am a language teacher and do acting for fun. I have never seen anyone ever before or since with a hundredth of the acting talent this woman had. She has never been in a single movie or TV show. If she had she would put everybody to shame with her amazing unique talent. This woman really IS the one in a million. The highlight of my whole life was reading my 5 lines with her.
Out of all the actors that are out there, I must say that the scene-stealers get my vote ultimately. Don is first on this list.

This was a great clip from a REAL actor. There’s actors and there’s celebrities. Don Cheadle is an actor. He learns, understands and worked on his craft. That’s why i don’t respect rappers/comedians/singers/athletes that they put in front of a camera and call them actors. Streep, DeNiro, Denzel Washington, Pacino are actors who just happen to be celebrities.
