Electric Violin Shop Hello, I have a metallic Yamaha SV-130, and I love it!! But, I find that the shoulder rest is very uncomfortable and I was wondering if you noticed how there was a little curve part on the violin in the video right next to the chin rest. I have all of the receipts and everything but I bought my violin around Christmas. Is there a way I can make a little curve like that to put in my own shoulder rest, or can I return my violin for a violin that has the little curve so I can put a normal shoulder rest onto it?
Nathan Daniel -- Christian Howes plays an SV-250 in the video, which does accommodate any standard shoulder rest. The SV-130 won't accommodate a regular shoulder rest. Some players who don't like the custom 3/4 Kun rest that is included use a foam pad with a rubber band instead. Don't hesitate to contact the shop at info@electricviolinshop.com or call 919-806-3311 Monday - Friday for assistance.
Hello Christian! Long time, filmed you playing with Dafnis in Phili almost 15 years ago!. I am playing a bit with pedals too, sooooo much fun. Do you know where it's possible to download various sound effects to load into my processor to play rock music on an electric violin? There are many samples in the internet, but I am looking to add more into my processor. Thank you.
Thanks, Electric Violin Shop & Christian Howes! I appreciate the insight. I was watching this video with my 8 year old daughter and her eyes popped when you kicked in the effects pedal. I have a fender ev-1 but haven't had an opportunity to really find out its capabilities. I'm not sure where to start with effects pedals. I'm certain the pedal you have with wah-wah, delay, reverb, etc. runs a pretty penny. I'm an adult student just starting out with an electric fiddle, what's a good starter pedal that you'd suggest for your students? Thanks for your time.
+Don Sullivan Hi Don i would recommend the same pedal i use as a starter- it's the boss ME-70 (or Me-80) You can call EVS (their number is at electricviolinshop.com) and they would have more detailed options. hope this helps
Yes, for sure it is. And although the BOSS ME-70 is a discontinued model their current model the ME-80 works great with Vipers as well. www.electricviolinshop.com/boss-me-80-multi-effects.html
Yes, you can use guitar pedals with violins. In fact, with very few exceptions, most of the pedals you find violinists using are guitar effects pedals. We sell a good variety of pedals that we've tested with violin and think sound good. You can shop our selection here: www.electricviolinshop.com/gear-accessories/effects-pedals.html
Thank you for this awesome video information. In the demonestration you are using Boss ME70 processor that sounds great. I have Digitech RP500 and I know very little about it, can you please help me out to get the most out of it.,
Understanding your multi-effects processor really comes down to spending a lot of time reading the manual and experimenting with tones. We posted a Facebook Live video awhile back talking about how to create and save patches, always working off a clean violin tone template that is saved in each bank. You can check it out here: facebook.com/ElectricViolinShop/videos/vl.146731185751059/10153980867723753/?type=1&theater
About the most fun device you can use with an electric violin is an envelope follower, such as an EHX Q Tron, which are also known as auto wahs. These boxes are triggered when used by an electric guitarist by pick attack. When used by an electric violinist, you trigger the effect with bow pressure. This is one guitar box that actually works BETTER with an electric violin, IMHO, and you can get an EHX Mini Q Tron for under 100 bucks new or about 50 bucks used on E Bay.
+James Krys I completely agree. I use a couple of different envelope followers and if you're on your game, you can just about get the violin to talk. I love them for emulating synth sounds when I'm doing covers of more techno or pop-type songs.
Could a WAH pedal come close to giving a violin a bagpipe type sound?..maybe with some sustain. Or even a flute like melody. Being able to carry a flute tone without breathing with a bow would be something.
I've gotten some pretty flutey sounds with a pitch shifter and a wah. As far as bagpipes, you're going to want to use your looper to make a drone, then... yeah, maybe.
Hello Christian, great informative video! Many thanks! Can I ask for an advice on my first electric violin? I'm a professional (classical) player and would like to move into electric! I think Yamaha's sound generally nice. Have you heard of a make called Bridge they are UK based. Thank you in advance.
+David Giardino based on what ive heard the Bridge is not as good a buy. The Yamaha's come backed w a 5 year warranty and if youre looking for an affordable model they just released the YEV around $600 retail
Thank you so much! I found a NS violin on eBay CR model. It's basically new for less than half its price! I think it's one of the best! Thanks for your advice, I'm a great fan of your videos!
+David Giardino glad you worked it out David! would be great to meet you. if you are free in early July I encourage you to check out the summer conference christianhowes.com/education/creative-strings-workshop/
+myskyeye14 Im not familiar w the harmonist but i do use the boss-me 70 for effects, including harmonizer. I personally find that the harmonizer is not necessary for violin, but i do like to use it for adding a lower or upper octave.
Hay Christian, what do you think about the sisoleo C.V.N style 1? I've got one but I just forgot what we call the effect processor that I bought for it. I hate when that happens. Keep it going. Z
Where can I buy that kind of bridge? I have an electric violin. But my pickups are not that good. I want to change it. Any chance I can purchase that kind of bridge? Thanks a lot! :)
Bryan Matias It used to be availableas a stand-alone pickup but, sadly, the Yamaha VNP-1 is now out of production for anything other than Yamaha's SV-250/255 violins and ac/el models.
Hi, I have a electric violin (Stagg Evn), and when I put effects on it, the sound is not very good, I can't find a good tone. If I change the strings and the bridge, I'm gonna get a better sound? Or the violin is not that good? Hope you can answer me! Thanks!
Your bridge shouldn't affect tone much, but you should definitely upgrade strings from what came with the violin, if you haven't already. Also, play with the EQ settings on the violin. Sometimes toning down the treble and boosting the bass can improve your sound on such a violin. If you're ever looking to upgrade, call us at 866-900-8400 or visit our website, electricviolinshop.com
Electric Violin Shop ahh ok, thank you so much! so, is not the violin that "sends" a bad sound to the pedal? and just one more thing, if I buy that pickup that you "plug" in the bridge, like this one: www.electricviolinshop.com/violin-pickups/k-k-hot-spot-instrument-transducer.html , and I put it on my electric violin, it will work, or it only can be used on acoustic violins?
Rosa Maria Segura The K&K HotSpot may not be a huge upgrade over what's already on the violin. Start with really good strings ($30-60), consider investing in a preamp (ART TubeMP is only $49) and experiment with tone settings on the violin, preamp, effects and amp. www.electricviolinshop.com/preamps/art-tube-mp.html www.electricviolinshop.com/strings/l/violin.html
+Rosa Maria Segura Hi! Did you have to buy new strings or was it ok? I want to buy those violin (Stagg EVN), but after i saw your comment i'm a little nervous. Do the effects work with the original strings? Thanks for reply.
Terezka Lutzbauerova hi, I bought new and better strings, and it is now better then with the old strings, but, if I was you, I'd try to buy another violin, if you want an electric violin, buy Yamaha Sv-130, I think it is the best electric violin, but if you don't care if it is electric or not, buy an acoustic one, perhaps Eagle VK- 644, it is not very expensive and it is good, I was in doubt between Vk644 and Stagg EVN, I went with Stagg EVN, and I regretted.. I should have bought Vk644... Stagg is a good violin, but when I plug it in my amplifier, the sound is not good, when I plug it in a effect pedal, it is better, but not what I expected...
Hi there! Christian plays a Yamaha SV-250 Silent electric violin. You can it and the 5-string version here on our site: www.electricviolinshop.com/sv-250-255.html
+nebrad16 not sure I understand the question. The violin is the Yamaha SV 250. It should have a standard sized frame as far as i know. The shoulder rest is the slipper rest. hope this helps!
Christian Howes Yes, thanks for getting back. I've had the less expensive yamaha for many years. It doesn't have that lower part of frame and thus there's nothing to hook a shoulder rest on. I've always struggled with it, Anyway I've recently bought a Bridge aquila, which has solved my problems and cured my shoulder ache!
Good morning, sorry for the inconvenience but could you tell me the name of the pedal you're using please? About violins, the pedal only works with YAMAHA and D'Addarío violins?, I'll wait for your response, thank you.
The Stagg is a very low priced instrument. The reason we don't sell them is because the instrument quality is not generally very high. Christian plays one of the higher level Yamahas, which will be a very different experience than a Stagg.
sandy ツ You can play it unplugged and it will produce a little sound. It will be audible for practice but it won't sound great or anything since it is not designed for acoustic resonance.
Dimitri, If you have a pickup on your acoustic violin you can achieve most of the same sounds. Actually, you can get ALL of these sounds, but when you use an acoustic instrument with a pickup to use distortion or overdrive, it can be very difficult to prevent feedback. It's possible, and there are electric violinist who do use high-gain effects with their electro-acoustic instruments, but be prepared to spend some extra time at first, getting the hang of where you need to be relative to your amp or monitor, gain staging, using a notch filter or phase inverter to control feedback, etc. If you already have an electric violin, then it's usually easier and more effective to use a pure electric (rather than an acoustic with a pickup) if you're going to be using a lot of effects for your performance.
@@electricviolinshopaccount2045 Christian, I just realized that you replied to me one year ago and I was not aware of it until now. oh well, Thank you so much to replying to my message. I am still looking into electic violin vs Acoustics with pick up or mic. I will check more of your videos. Have a pleasant day.
JP 2001 Perfect timing with that question--we're coming out with a video on that topic im the next couple of days! Subscribe so you don't miss it. Short answer: you can use harmonizers, octavers and chorus effects to sounds like more than one violin. Our next video will explain more.
@@marcosleiteviolinista It depends on your definition of "wireless". You have to have a cable coming out of the violin going to the control box. But you can go wireless from the control box, meaning that you won't have a cable going to the floor.
@@electricviolinshopaccount2045 Can i connect my wireless transmitter directly to this violin (without the control box)? My idea would be to connect the violin to the wireless transmitter and at the base of the receiver (away from me) to connect a preamp or the control box. My wireless transmitter is a Shure GLXD 16 (pedal model) Thank you a lot for the help! (Sorry by my english, i'm from Brazil)
@@marcosleiteviolinista No, you cannot connect the wireless transmitter directly to the violin. You have to run from the violin to the control box with the included 1/8" TRS mini cable, then you can plug your wireless transmitter into the 1/4" mono output on the control box. That's the best that it gets with the SV-250/255, for now.
Anand Sen We love the LR Baggs ParaAcoustic DI, which is $189. With a lot fewer features the ART Tube MP also works wonders for just $59. Check out all our preamps here: www.electricviolinshop.com/gear-accessories/effects-pedals/preamps.html
You can use effects with an acoustic violin, but you must have some way of getting your violin sound into an electrical signal, i.e. a pickup. Our most popular violin pickup is called the Kremona and is available here: www.electricviolinshop.com/kremona-violin-pickup-with-1-4-carpenter-jack.html You can attach the pickup to the violin bridge and use an instrument cable to connect to an effects pedal or multi-effects processor (like the one seen in the video). You'll also need an amplifier to hear the effects, or some multi-FX pedals have USB which would allow you to record to your computer.
You can! Keep in mind that distortion effects may cause feedback when used with an acoustic violin with a pickup, but you can experiment with levels and how your violin is pointed to reduce the chance of feedback.
Pratim Banerjee 1. Please don't even think about using this "strings" that come with those cheap instruments you can buy online. They will tear if you just look at them. 2. Of course D'addario Strings are better than the useless stuff that comes with the violin. But the strings alone don't have a huge impact. I would suggest you to buy a good violin like yamaha or viper. An instrument from cecilio or yinfente may have: • really, really bad pickups and preamps with a lot of noise- with this technology (you can order the exact same that they use for only 10$ at aliexpress....) you wont be able to create a great sound. • bad tuning pegs and even worse fine tuner that you will have to replace • sometimes curved fingerboarda which leads the violin to a rasping sound
You can put better strings on a Cecilio and it'll improve the playability a little. But it'll be like putting good tires on a really cheap car. Yes, it'll make it handle better, but it's not going to turn it into a Porsche. We certainly understand budgetary constraints. If you can't afford a Yamaha, then a Cecilio is probably better than nothing. But just understand that there's a reason that the Yamahas cost more. They're better instruments. And you can spend money to try to make the cheaper violin sound and play better, but as you're spending that money, realize that you're eventually going to have almost as much money in the cheaper violin than you would have had in the Yamaha.
+Christian Howes He is referring to when you immediately cut from one clip to another, without a transition. Maybe some sort of transition between clips would help, although it's not really a big deal. Great video by the way! It sounded amazing! (Sorry for the late reply)

Christian Howes Yes, thanks for getting back. I've had the less expensive yamaha for many years. It doesn't have that lower part of frame and thus there's nothing to hook a shoulder rest on. I've always struggled with it,
Anyway I've recently bought a Bridge aquila, which has solved my problems and cured my shoulder ache!
+nebrad16 ahhhh ... I was referring to the newer Yamaha model- it has the frame. But at any rate Im glad to hear you worked it out!
What's your opinion about "stagg electric violin " ?!
I DID NOT KNOW JIM BELUSHI PLAYED THE VIOLIN! AND QUITE GOOD! ;) ;)
LOL! yeah i get that a lot...:)
Can u tell me how much will a cantini and yamaha 5 string violin cost
Good morning, sorry for the inconvenience but could you tell me the name of the pedal you're using please? About violins, the pedal only works with YAMAHA and D'Addarío violins?, I'll wait for your response, thank you.
Christian uses a Boss ME-80. It'll work with any electric violin.
@@ElectricViolinShop Ok, thank you very much, have a good day 😀
I'll get a Stagg violin, the same model you have there ¿Do you think it can be a good electric violin?
Hi- i use a Yamaha electric violin. I am not familiar with the Stagg. thnx
The Stagg is a very low priced instrument. The reason we don't sell them is because the instrument quality is not generally very high. Christian plays one of the higher level Yamahas, which will be a very different experience than a Stagg.
can you use it without it being plugged it or will it have no sound
sandy ツ You can play it unplugged and it will produce a little sound. It will be audible for practice but it won't sound great or anything since it is not designed for acoustic resonance.
Can one achieve similar to identical sound on the acoustic violin using the looper boss device used in this video?
Which effects could I use to make one violin sound like an ensemble?
JP 2001 Perfect timing with that question--we're coming out with a video on that topic im the next couple of days! Subscribe so you don't miss it. Short answer: you can use harmonizers, octavers and chorus effects to sounds like more than one violin. Our next video will explain more.
Electric Violin Shop cool thanks for the help
you can use a soundinterface and use guitar rig pro. It has a esemlbe-effect and i use it with my electric cello. sounds great!
Jords as a guitar player , I'd say chorus is the effect you'd want to look at
What’s this black equipment underside the violin? Someone knows?
He's got one of the "Lindsey boxes". It's one of the perks of being a Yamaha artist. They're not really available to the general public.
Electric Violin Shop Account thank you!
So i can’t foi wireless with this violin?
@@marcosleiteviolinista It depends on your definition of "wireless". You have to have a cable coming out of the violin going to the control box. But you can go wireless from the control box, meaning that you won't have a cable going to the floor.
@@electricviolinshopaccount2045
Can i connect my wireless transmitter directly to this violin (without the control box)? My idea would be to connect the violin to the wireless transmitter and at the base of the receiver (away from me) to connect a preamp or the control box.
My wireless transmitter is a Shure GLXD 16 (pedal model)
Thank you a lot for the help!
That's the best that it gets with the SV-250/255, for now.
where can i get those pedals?
+Akemi Ogasawara Hanazono I recommend electricviolinshop.com :)
Thanks +Christian Howes ... +Akemi Ogasawara Hanazono, please check out our effects pedals and loopers here: www.electricviolinshop.com/effects-pedals.html

I'm using an electric violin with a passive pick up so needs a pre amp to get gud sound... So can you please suggest me a gud pre amp with low cost
Anand Sen
We love the LR Baggs ParaAcoustic DI, which is $189. With a lot fewer features the ART Tube MP also works wonders for just $59. Check out all our preamps here: www.electricviolinshop.com/gear-accessories/effects-pedals/preamps.html
Electric Violin Shop these products ships to India?
Anand Sen, yes, we ship to India. You can purchase through our site
Electric Violin Shop can I use this art tube mp in stages?.. Will it sounds gud?
the art mp is good enough.... the lr baggs is better....
you get what you pay for
Is this applicable for acoustic violin?
You can use effects with an acoustic violin, but you must have some way of getting your violin sound into an electrical signal, i.e. a pickup. Our most popular violin pickup is called the Kremona and is available here: www.electricviolinshop.com/kremona-violin-pickup-with-1-4-carpenter-jack.html
You can attach the pickup to the violin bridge and use an instrument cable to connect to an effects pedal or multi-effects processor (like the one seen in the video). You'll also need an amplifier to hear the effects, or some multi-FX pedals have USB which would allow you to record to your computer.
Hi!, is a nice tutorial!.
May i use boss ME-70 (or Me-80) with a Piezzo fishman v200? Did you recommend?
Best regards!
You can! Keep in mind that distortion effects may cause feedback when used with an acoustic violin with a pickup, but you can experiment with levels and how your violin is pointed to reduce the chance of feedback.
Very helpfully data.
Keep uploading Videos!
what price?
Sandra Cygan The BOSS ME-80 is $299.99 at www.electricviolinshop.com/boss-me-80-multi-effects.html

HOW DO THE CECILIO VIOLINS SOUND AS COMPARED TO THE YAMAHA VIOLLINS??
Pratim Banerjee
not as good of course, but they are cheap
what if I use better strings??? like d'addario strings???
Pratim Banerjee
An instrument from cecilio or yinfente may have:
• really, really bad pickups and preamps with a lot of noise- with this technology (you can order the exact same that they use for only 10$ at aliexpress....) you wont be able to create a great sound.
• bad tuning pegs and even worse fine tuner that you will have to replace
• sometimes curved fingerboarda which leads the violin to a rasping sound
Electric Violin Shop... What is ur take on stagg violins (stagg evn 4/4)???
Good stuff, but I hate jump cuts. Ouch.
+Will Jamieson Studio What are "jump cuts"? I'd love to know so i can look out for this in the future:) thanks!
+Christian Howes He is referring to when you immediately cut from one clip to another, without a transition. Maybe some sort of transition between clips would help, although it's not really a big deal. Great video by the way! It sounded amazing! (Sorry for the late reply)
+Kate H. oh- got it- thanks!
If you don't have B-Roll, some people use a flash of light between clips for a transition.
#jumpcuts
thx for the tip:)
I'm hearing voices in the background, it's creeping me out!
Where's modulation? Chorus?
I love those effects too and use them on some of my other videos. This video was focused on a limited set of effects
"Overdrive< also know as distortion "- if you dont know what you are toaling about, pelase dont confuse people. Those are NOT the saem
Overdrive is different from distortion.
thanks for the clarification!
Is it possible to get a sound similar to a bowed lyre? Like in this video:
ruclips.net/video/CvgMSZGnGrQ/видео.html
yes!
There's a lot of porn music in this video
LOL!
Overdrive and distortion are not a same thing.
thx for the distinction
Variksenlento overdrive is a type of distortion
I wish I had two grand to spare omg 😩
rosaleigh Bailey - We could get you up and running with electric violin, effects and amp for under $1000! We also offer a 'Pickup My Acoustic' package for < $300 that lets you use your acoustic with amp and effects. Give us a call or check out www.electricviolinshop.com
Why so out of tune?
Maciej Afanasjew You know that we can see your videos, right?
without effect electric violin tone is stiff and weak. i think. .
I can only think of one electric guitar player who just plugs his guitar in and plays (Nile Rogers). Everyone else runs through amps and effects. That's how we should look at electric violins, too.
