Trent is like the “why can’t you just be normal” meme of miniature painting. It’s genuinely great seeing you just throw convention out the window and do what makes you happy.
Absolutely agreed. I only got into making visual art a couple of years back when I started mini painting, and while I don't have a voice yet, I am having a good time! So I think I'll get there eventually, as will anyone else who just keeps going, keeps trying and experimenting.
The way your videos feel like raw chaos while also maintaining a cohesive narrative is always fascinating to watch. Really glad to see you doing more stuff with digital sculpting. A digital “bits box” is a free project idea.
What you think matters most, but me personally, ABSOLUTELY think you have a style. Every mini you paint comes out so wild and creative, and looking through your history, a mix of unique tools, approaches, and the 'F It, We Ball' attitude you show off all come together to make models that never look the way they're 'supposed to' in the best way! Loved your work for years, keep it up man. That custom Stompa is rad
Love Trent style- it always inspires me to get up and make something weird. The new terrain set makes me happy, a creation made by you and Rachel together is extra special!
you have such a different approach to painting conpared to other youtubers. i would love to see you take a lot of time on one single model and make it look the best you can. i bet it would turn out stunning.

You don't even need watercolor pencils, just use a good old regular pencil to create metallic chipping on the edges of the armor or just paint your rifles black, then rub a pencil there. Just remember to seal it afterwards so pencils' shine won't rub away. We shouldn't assume things new to us or not seen on RUclips are genuinely groundbreaking, like melting zipper bags to create plastic strings for dripping pieces, etc. I still remember the 80s, dad was already using oils pinwashing on tanks and helicopter models... then someone brought it back in the 00s for them fantasy smol dudes and it was kind of revolutionary as going back to gunpowder weapons after discovering lasebeams... BTW I wasn't trying to be harsh, just giving my 2 cents... since English ain't my default language I can see how I might sound like a bag full of scrap metal rolling down a hill so sorry in advance if it felt that way. About Trent's voice @Miscast thing well... EZ Have you ever heard yourself in a recording? I bet your voice doesn't quite sound like you daily hear yourself. Here's a thought: Maybe it's not entirely possible for us to perceive our own "voice" when it comes to our unique, distinctive style. I can obviously tell a thing I made apart from something a friend made, and I sense this uniquely personal, really apparent quality in theirs. I have this hunch that it's the same case the other way around. I'm a bit too close to the entire process around the thing I made, which, surprisingly, seems to make it harder to actually 'see' it. I suppose it depends what school of thought you subscribe to - to me, low brow is the highest approach to art, because it's genuine and enthusiastic.
Watercolour pencils are often used in the doll and action figure communities for faceups and body paint, so I honestly wasn't surprised to see you use them here since they're great for certain effects and for some fine detail work. It's a good idea to use them for minis; especially since mistakes can be cleaned away with a wet q-tip, or one could potentially do some interesting and unique special effects with them.

You have a style, and you have a voice. Yes, your sculptural skills are your strong suite, but watching you paint your nurgle minis was so inspiring; the way you apply paint liberally, the way it drips and how you work around that. I can lose my vision when painting with an over zealous eye to detail - but my favourite work (miniature and actual landscape painting) comes when I work fast and with passion - much like you do. Please keep doing you - it's fucking awesome to watch!
Absolutely on board with this. I don't have the time for model hobby these days but i was always cooking up new ways to. "cheat" and getting interesting effects. Dipping, giant dry brushes, rolling models in things, driving with rags, pouring, flicking, marbling, texturing. PS - if you read this message could you reply and say hi. I love this hobby because there are so many ways to do it right. Spend your time doing the stuff you enjoy and rush through all the steps that you tolerate, and you get an army you can play games with or just put on display or stuff into a box and never touch again However you like to engage with this is the correct way to do it lol
I feel like we can safely say you're growing 'style' is finding way to NOT actually pain the minis which i LOVE xD best BELIEVE im ganna start using my resin, pencil, and marker supplies for miniatures. as well as the ways you added actual texture!
Trent! I'm honored you think of me as a peer. My "style" is the result of teaching myself how to paint using the supplies I happened to have at the time and a blatant disregard for "the correct" way of painting. For those interested, here is my process: Use a tile as a palette. Brush prime black (Vallejo surface primer- black). Then basecoat black (anita's all purpose acrylic). Make sure all the crevices are fully coated. Next, overbrush the entire model a light color. I usually do tan or light gray. Do not push this into the crevices! After this step, it will look somewhat like a statue. Next, paint the raised gray areas the color you want, leaving the black in the crevices alone. Pick out details. Use a fine brush with watered down black paint to draw in contrast lines in important areas , like under the eyes. Finally, brush on varnish (Vallejo gloss on eyes mouth etc, matte on the rest).
Great video! Our paints are great for base and top coating minis. Base coat will give a solid colour to work from when you are detail painting and top coating with our clears protects them so they can be handled when playing. One thing, try our painting clips - they are designed to clip on to the model so you don't have to hold them with your hand and get paint all over your fingers! :)
Hey, awesome that you found this video. I've used your products for the last couple of years, I buy them mostly because you're Australian made, my local shop stocks them and the price point is good for the volume. I have worked my way through the majority of your products at the point for a wide variety of projects. I've spread the word about your products to most of my Australian peers because you've solved a lot of problems we face in Aus like that you reliably sell replacement parts for your airbrushes. I use to recommend the baby single action airbrush you used to sell quite a lot also - it was a great price point and very easy to maintain - I could understand discontinuing it however but I LOVED IT. I do have some clips, but for a project like this where I'm painting 150 models at the exact same time, I cant justify the cost. If you ever want to do anything together contact me!
Loved this. Made me pumped to paint my model for a competition coming this month! That centerpiece model really is the icing on the cake of bloody orks
I get the most fun out of the kitbashing part of the hobby and I only enjoy narrative gameplay. So I have completely stopped doing armies and instead soley fixing up small skirmish teams and warbands. This means I can change painting styles and schemes for each team. Which has led to me actually finishing painting stuff
So relatable trying to find lost pieces in the carpet. It was 2 and a half weeks before I found my tech priest's head. under the side table. I was listening intently each time I vacuumed for it to ting its way up the tube.
I love the style, and the approach to problems like the paint foaming just adding extra style to it. As an aside I'm curious if you've heard of/played Turnip28? Its a skirmish game with a heavy emphasis on kitbashing your own stuff in this super weird vegatable apocalypse which feels like it would fit in with a lot of your stuff.
I love the utter chaos of this video... if I filmed my life and crafting it'd be a lot like this. 😀 I've read and been told that auto body filler spray is good for covering layer lines on FDM prints too (but I've not tried it yet).
So, I'm pretty sure the reason behind the foaming is the PVA and Baking soda texture isn't completely protected by the concrete texture spray. The baking soda is reacting with something in the paints and foaming up. Just a happy little accident that happens to look amazing 🤩. Keep up the great work, Trent. And I'll have to try the colored pencil method of dry brushing sometime.
Hell yeah, this vid struck home for some reason. I hate Grey on the table and at the start of my armies I always have the goal of having a striking but very simple paint scheme. Spray paints get me 80% there and the rest needs to be super simple so washes, stipple, drybrush and that's it. Pick out some details with a brush and be done. Super simple but I frequently get compliments!
I don't know if the research of your painting style isn't more interesting than finding it... the quest is funnier than the end kinda thing 😉 I love the gruesome narrative of your new army !

As an aside I'm curious if you've heard of/played Turnip28? Its a skirmish game with a heavy emphasis on kitbashing your own stuff in this super weird vegatable apocalypse which feels like it would fit in with a lot of your stuff.
I almost feel like turnip28 was made for him. the wild things he would do.
@@monkey5266 Agreed. Miscast's take on Turnip28 would be rad as heck.
Very familiar, love the creator, but I haven't made anything yet. I really should huh
Dude you have really turned it up to the next level! 👍
Thank you! I'm trying!
@@Miscast And Succeeding!!!
I have the same painting style. Throw a bunch of paint on things in a messy way and hope it works out once its dry haha
love it
0:23 I have never heard anything more relatable in the hobby
hahah seems like a common problem tbf
Wow, that "mini" came out pretty neat for a ender 3 !
lots of love has gone into tuning the ender 3 for sure
Ooh, i love the look. Definitely going to try some of what you did on my kitbashes.
Good luck! Send pictures if you attempt something!
always a good day when trent drops a new video
thankyou!!
Gotta get onto the narrative table
Watching all of the nurgle diaries, I never thought you had an issue with painting your flavor. You'll find it!
thank you!
I got a good laugh out of 'I'm thinking oil paints...to paint this thing quickly'
well... it painted quickly, was it dry while I was playing? absolutely not hahaha
I love the utter chaos of this video... if I filmed my life and crafting it'd be a lot like this. 😀
I've read and been told that auto body filler spray is good for covering layer lines on FDM prints too (but I've not tried it yet).
great idea, I'll try that!
They look absolutely Monstrous!! And I'd love to face them!!
thankyou! Thats the best compliment!
thats a very chaotic and orky painting process. nice work.
thanks hahah!
Love your work, you brighten up my days!
thankyou!!
this was so chaotic i love it
hahah thankyou
I think your gunmetal reacted with your sodium bicarbonate. That’s awesome.
"There's no robot duct tape, it's just that nipple is a cross" i assume no one has said that sentence before.
hahhaahahahha
The return of the king!
ayyyy thankyou! Sorry I was gone so long so much more on the way!
Next video: painting my Warhammer army with fruits
okay, I can try
You are playing a game in 1 hour and you choose oil paints that take days to dry 😂. Never change Trent, never change.
My hands were a little covered in paint by the end hahah
So, I'm pretty sure the reason behind the foaming is the PVA and Baking soda texture isn't completely protected by the concrete texture spray. The baking soda is reacting with something in the paints and foaming up.
Just a happy little accident that happens to look amazing 🤩.
Keep up the great work, Trent. And I'll have to try the colored pencil method of dry brushing sometime.
ooo interesting theory, I'll test it.
9:24 Trent, I don't want to alarm you, but I think that stompa is holding you at knife point...
yeahhhhh, it does that a bit.
I'm in love with that flesh trukk
flesh trukk loves you
That stompa is so flippin cool!!
Thankyou Bloodgut Knuckledragger thinks you're cool too
Hell yeah, this vid struck home for some reason. I hate Grey on the table and at the start of my armies I always have the goal of having a striking but very simple paint scheme. Spray paints get me 80% there and the rest needs to be super simple so washes, stipple, drybrush and that's it. Pick out some details with a brush and be done. Super simple but I frequently get compliments!
totally!!
You're absolutely mad. Love it
thankyou!!
Sort of painting tutorial??? Loved it.
maybeeee?? hopefully and also hopefully not ahhah
I like the use of Watercolor Pencils 👀
I may have to give that one a shot
I hope you do!!
Ok …………. This is absolute madness …………….
….. And I love it !!
Thankyou!
I don't know if the research of your painting style isn't more interesting than finding it... the quest is funnier than the end kinda thing 😉
I love the gruesome narrative of your new army !
Thankyou mate! Probably hahah, maybe not best to find out
Absolute savage! 🤘🏼
I've just upset myself by thinking of the sound that will be made as orks pour in and out of your "meat wagon"...
yes.
