Thanks! I try to show the good and bad things that go with orchid growing. It’s unrealistic to only have perfect flowering plants all the time 🤣

The hardest thing sometimes is to wait and see how they do!! Love watching all your videos ❤️

Haha yea. Orchids is a lesson in patience. When I can’t wait, I buy flowers at the store 🤣

Interesting that you told the viewers that this plant was purchased bare root and in winter. Tamiami Orchid Festival,Dade County, Florida is timed in January annually. I first went there in 2022 and did not purchase bare root orchids because I was new to orchids. I did however purchase some bare root orchids that May in 2022 and 2023 at the Redland International Orchid Festival in Redland Fruit and Spice Park in South Dade, Florida. I made sure to ask the vendors about care for these plants and the big takeaway was give those older roots and the plant enough time to acclimate before potting. I GREATLY appreciate this video and hope that your viewers learn so their purchases are timed appropriately. Best Regards

Thanks for sharing your experience, also valid for other species and hybrids. In my opinion we learn a lot from mistakes. Your plant has a lovely new growth, she will do fine from now on 😍

Haha I definitely learn the most from my mistakes...the plants let you know what’s wrong...just need to learn to read them better 🤣

Pupuratas are also supposed to be cool growing so that's another thing that should be taken into consideration when caring for them.

Thanks for sharing Jess. All good valid points. It's tough to establish cattleyas in wintertime. I've had bifoliates even spook me in the fall, not doing anything for a long time.

Oh yea, bifoliates are tricky...but once you get the hang of it, it’s not so bad. We all have to go through the growing pains first 😁

Lesson Learned ! I too am guilty of buying during the Winter & struggling to establish a carnea. Have you considered using Sea Weed Extract to stimulate the roots? Whenever I get a bare root Orchid I always soak it in some sea weed. Whether it helps, I have no idea.

I haven’t tried seaweed extract for recovering orchids...I usually reserve it for plants that just need a little boost and not too much fertilizer. Might be worth a try since I have it already. Thanks for the suggestion! 😁

My Experience is that Laelia Purpurata is actually quite a bit more temperature tolerant than you are describing. I own about 5 different specimens and they have not shown signs of stress even when exposed to lows of 39F (4C) to highs in the low 100s (38C) (most of the year it is 50 to 80 and we have few days outside of this range).. If you are going to see excess heat water more and if you are getting them cooler than keep them drier (peak of winter I probably go 2 weeks without watering them). I actually think the black you are seeing could be from a calcium deficiency as this is quite common in cattleyas as they develop new growths as they don't have a good means of sending this mineral into the new growths.. I would recommend you give your plants a watering with either cal mag or calcium and magnesium nitrate in the spring and a couple of times during the growing season. I hope this is helpful!

Good to know! I haven’t tried pushing this plant to temp extremes, but it’s good to know it can handle those temps well in reg conditions. I’ll have to try and see if CalMag will help with the coloration, thanks for pointing it out! I didn’t even think of that at the time. 😁

Sometimes the troubleshooting can take quite some time... 😒 do you know that it has taken me this long to be able to watch your video? Every time I clicked on it, it would say, 'not available in your country' 😳and just now I thought I would try again, and there were no issues, so, I do apologize for not getting to you sooner! I hope that this was a one off! 🤞🏼
