- Organic pest control is an important thing to understand. Insecticidal soap is easy to apply and make: 1 tablespoon pure Castile soap mixed in 1 quart of water.
Perhaps more importantly, plant for diversity, reduce your fertilizer rates, and let nature take its course. “Good” bugs eating “bad” bugs happens everyday!
In appropriate April Fools day fashion, I set out to make this video and treat an aphid infestation on my pots of barley, but it turns out I don’t have any aphids anymore!

I learn so much from your videos. Knew about biodiversity but not about over fertilizing. Thanks.
Brie, thank you so much for this video. After watching it, I went straight to my local garden center to buy the insecticidal soap because aphids have become an issue with my jasmine. I also do not like to use any pesticides. I am a new gardener, so learning from pros like you has helped me tremendously. Thank you for your content!
I appreciate the depth of your commentary and your passion for organic methods; however, the title was a bit misleading. This seemed to be mostly a sermon for your preferences and methods of not using insecticide as opposed to a video about making insecticidal soap. On the other hand I did pick up on your knowledge of alternative insect control. Where I live the bugs are ravenous and ubiquitous year round, so insecticidal soap is pretty much a necessity at times.
Thank you! So much ! I love your poppy video! To grew ten last year and succeeded !
also, going for a npk around 5-5-5 seems to always give me good results, as many cheap ones with 20-2-2 might be good for growing green salad. But it makes for explosive leafy non fruity experience with cucumber, tomato, strawberries, peppers etc. So to have a slower 5-5-5 ish to avoid bugs is only a win win as far as i can see.
Thank you! Didn’t know about nitrogen being part of the problem.
I'm good with not doing anything. However, l can't stand the look of aphids on a plant. And how about Japanese beetles? And slugs! Oh, dear.
It's not the bugs that are killing plants in my garden. My neighborhood in 8b Austin, TX has armadillos, raccoons, a skunk ,(,I haven't seen it but dogs have been sprayed), possums, a fox family, and worst of all squirrels. I live in the city, but Zilker Park is just down the hill. I don't want to hurt the critters though I wish they would leave my seedlings alone. Any idess?
Fencing or an electric fence.
I have a two hour webinar that discusses this. You can find a ore real order session on astercommunity.com
You're so lucky to have wildlife. I live in an urban area of Houston, and we have none of that. No pollinators, few birds, and zero wildlife. I've planted to attract all kinds of pollinators and birds, but it's not possible because they just don't exist here due to the high level of pollution. I seriously wish I had your problem.
I learned my lesson last year when I sprayed the aphids on my sweet peas with soap. Apparently it’s one of the few thing you can’t use the soap on. Ugh. I try to just leave things be. Spider mites are one thing that seems to get out of control really fast so it hard to do!
Every year my hibiscus shrubs are destroyed by what I believe is hibiscus sawfly. The only treatment that works without having to spray every 10 days or so is a Bayer Advanced systemic insecticide. ( I hope my organic gardening friends are not reading this) I apply it early summer and I don't have to worry about it all season. The only fertilizer I use is Black Cow. What am I doing wrong?
When I have to spray veggies and other plants I have a home made insecticide I use. I combine halipeno pepper, onion and garlic in a pot of boiling water. ( It's a project.)Strain and spray. Caution test an area first because I've burned a few plants in the past.
Here are some alternatives to the systemic neonic

Such great info...thanks again..
I keep finding ants inside my plants. Recently one inside! Yesterday one outside. It's creepy. I pulled it and soaked the root ball in insecticidal soap. Zone 6b
Is the soap effective on tea scale? I presume dormant oil is better, but soap can be used at a broader range of temperatures.
Yes.. I still use oil but soap will work.
Can I use this on boxwoods?
Yes!
Better not to have insects this early in the season! That’s a good thing!
Has anyone told you that you look just like the actress Mary Steambergen ( I may have misspelled her last name)?
No I haven’t heard that, but thanks! She’s awesome!
