No electricity, no power tools, wooden scaffolding - how on earth did they build such structures in medieval times. No buildings today come close to Cathedrals.
Not true. Salisbury cathedral is an impressive structure, I've been up the tower several times. Neverlethess, it took roughly 30 years to build and stands a little over 400ft high. By comparison, the Shard in London (which I have also been up) is a little over 1000 ft high (2.5 times the height of Salisbury cathedral) and was built in 3 years.
"It's been there for 800 years." 700 years, actually. Well, actually, a little more. The cathedral was mostly built between 1220 and 1258, but the spire wasn't built until 1320. The cathedral clock (which is thought to potentially be the oldest working clock in the world) dates from 1386, whereas the organ in the cathedral was built in 1877.
A Fred Dibnah vid led me to his, did the Tower Tour at Salisbury a couple of weeks ago (which is FANTASTIC) but am a Lancastrian so have deep ties to Fred!
