  • Let’s talk about how we can improve any part of our storytelling with a well-placed game. From chess to darts to “hide the Saltine,” games are part of how we interact with each other-so they should probably be a part of our writing, I think. Let’s talk about how you can use games as an essential part of your plot, a device to liven up any scene, or as a part of your worldbuilding.

A game can be used to both progress the plot and provide characterization. See the Liars' Dice scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. The channel Lord Ravenscraft has a video on it.
TLDR of scene: Will Jr. challenges Davey Jones to a game in order to find out where he keeps the chest key. Will Sr. joins to try to protect his son. All 3 reveal their motivations and character traits though their playstyles.

Cole! We have to redo the video. We forgot about Pirates.

Great video, Adam! Love that we can determine how much games can influence the plot, a little or a lot. Or to show characterisation like "Hide the Saltine" in Scrubs. My WIP actually has a game that's pretty relevant to the plot, at least, the past timeline plot.
My story is a 2-tiered timeline, weaving the past (1996) with the present (2011) and each chapter is from a different timeline. So chapter one takes place in 1996, when the 4 main characters met as teens in camp and the following chapter takes place in 2011, fifteen years later when they meet for the first time in person as adults.
The 1996 timeline has a game where they must complete challenges based on popular 80s games like Battleship and Hungry, Hungry Hippo. I'm currently using it to show characterisation but I think I can also use it as a parallel to the plot in the 2011 timeline.
Thanks for the great tips, examples and ideas :-)

This is a great underrated video that gave me a lot to consider in my writing. I love the connections you made here and hope to see more videos. Thanks! Have a great day

I use one as an introduction to the main character after the beginning settles the dust and setup for how it's meant to be (while also being a joke opposite of what actually happens).

Love that you got a Scrubs reference in there!

I totally didn't write a whole video and have Cole animate it just to sneak in one Scrubs reference, why would you suggest such a thing?
