I am *very* impressed with R&L. I just bought a mobile Icom 4100 from them and UPS lost it- they marked it delivered when it wasn’t. R&L didn’t blink an eye when I called them up and were willing to ship out another that day. I’m a first time customer in another state and they didn’t know me from Adam. I asked them instead to hold a replacement for me and we’ll give UPS a week to find it, as I started a trace with UPS already. The nice gal on the phone said she'd hold another at her desk and wait for me to call back. Well the original package arrived a few days later after some unknown joyride/adventure, all sealed up and no worse for wear. Can't wait to install the 4100 in my RV! Best price, no tax, free shipping, and stellar customer service. Fantastic!
I have the SAA-2N & I Really Like It I Also Had a v3 i think it was but it was smaller & a Lot harder to use with my big Man Paws & Sausage Fingers so i sent it on Down The Line ! I Really like having the Full size N Connectors 2 That is Sooo much better imho !
From my experience. N connectors are much more rugged than sma. they will tolerate being connected and disconnected many more times. I ordered this one because of the N connector feature. Thanks for the video!
Jason you just cost me money. After watching your video and some of Smokin Apes video, I headed to R&L. Been wanting one. Merry Christmas to myself. Thanks for the great video
I bought the V2 with n connectors from R&L 2 months ago. Best investment I have ever made!!! It has helped me find issues with my home antennas and helped me set my mobile antennas with ease. Suggest getting a SMA to SO-239 adapter when you buy it!!! I thought down the road if I needed it for higher frequencies it can do it. The battery lasts a long time!! There are three LED lights on the back (in red) that show battery level. I also figured the N connectors would be stronger than the SMA in usage. R&L had it listed at $69 dollars. You can't beat it for the price!!! Thanks for the great review Jason!!
The larger displays are nice for those of us with aging eyes. I find the numbers / letters on the small displays a bit harder to read and end up needing to wear magnifiers. I bought the version 2 in case I want to work in the higher bands in the future and because of the fact that it has double the sampling points. It also provides 1024 sampling points when used with computer software.
I bought the SAA2 few weeks back and but it in use on antenna for 2 m quarter wave ground plane. I have max SWR at 1.759 and min of 1.189 to 1 for the whole band.
I am building a 3 Meter Dish Radio telescope and will be making my own anttenas for it in several bands. Hydrogen, Oxygen, Water Masser. ETC. I just figure that the wider the bandwidth of a test meter is always the best. And yes I will be needing adapters for various connectors. Bigger display is nice too.
I'm getting the SMA connectors, but I still don't know whether to get the H4 or the SAA2 model. Don't sweat the case, I've got a drawer full of them and you can get them from Amazon.
Whats the reason you’re calibrating your test equipment to a wide band from 100MHz to 900 MHz? Ideally you would calibrate it to a more specific band to test- HF, VHF, UHF. This is to get more accurate reading on different frequencies.
I love my NanoVNA as it does so much for incredibly little fundage. I use it more than my Tektronix and Rigol 1054DZ due to portability in the field and cheaper to replace after a voltage spike. Great video. 73 de KI1Y, Cocoa Beach.
I’m with you Jason, I have an H4 and want a better case for it. I think I have another in a nice little case but I’m moving and it has been misplaced lately with all the packing! :( So if you find a source for the H4 case, let me know too!..Thanks, 73, Tom KC3QAC
I love my nanoVNA! I wish it had the case you have though. Is there any risk of fakes with this one? There have been many reports of fakes on the older ones. Sorry if you covered this later in the video.
@@HamRadio2 yes that was same as last version. I just relied on smoking apes review. When I first saw this I was chomping at the bit to buy it. All because it had N connectors and a case. But maybe I can get a case. Also not having the scroll wheel is a big deal to me. Thanks for the review. Another great video! 73 de KI5HXM
Thanks for the review. Just a quick question. When you are working the calibrations is it better to attache the cable first and then do the calibrations at the end of the cable? Would that then eliminate the cable from your tests and sweeps that you would use the VNA for? I am thinking to purchase one of these little units and am stuck on which one to go with. 73 John (KC9QFP)
I understand that, but why do i need this if i already have a manual antenna tuner? Unless you are doing lots of antenna experimentation this seems overkill.
@@petek1pml746 A tuner and an Analyzer aren't the same thing. Analyzers are great for when you build antennas, deploy antennas, setup antennas at a temporary location, etc. It will also help you get your home antenna tuned better so that you won't necessarily have to use a tuner.
Do not rotate the standard on the vna port connector. Hold with both hands and turn the nut. Rotating the standard wears off the gold plating of the connector. As you wear the plating off the measurements will become erratic. This applies as well for all connectors. I've used a vna for decades now with the same cal set. A newbe engineer I trained refused to take my advice and ruined a 5k cal set within a few months.

It’s on my short list. I’m tired of dragging the MFJ 259B around. Me and the big guy in the red suit are going to have to talk. OK I may just have to break out the card and put one in my stocking.

@Spencer Alfredo i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.

I bought a Nano VNA a while back and used it to tune my HF vertical, loved it and worked really well
Thanks for commenting
Just received my SAA-2N from R&L. Wow - that is a major upgrade in quality. It's got some heft, and the screen is soooo much more usable than before.
Nice!
Well that is 25 minutes of my life that I will never get back again. 5 minutes of useful info padded out to 25.
Just got mine from R&L Electronics. For homebrew antennas for any band. Not just ham stuff..now to learn to use it.

The NanoVNA-F (Version 3.1) has an operating range of 10 KHz to 1.5 GHz versus what your chart shows. Just FYI, and 73. Don (wd8dsb)
just bought myself a SAA-2N, but mostly for measuring directional couplers I made.. and I'll try to abuse it for impedance measurements.
Does it save the cal. data? Do you have to load the cal every time?
Should i make calibration for adding other connector ?
Thanks for the video, it will surely help me with my purchase decision because my MFJ-259 is already an old thing...
73, Max.
I am seeing different menufacturers of the NanoVNA. Is there an original manufacturer, and not a cheap copy?

Question what adapter do I need to connect to a normal radio? N-to-SO239 or N Male to UHF Female Adapter N Connector to PL-259 SO-239
If this the best they have? 4 inch screen?

How could you hook this up to rg8 coax go analyze etc??? The connect looks so small
I just bought the Nanos VNA Vector. I think I jumped the gun. I probably should have watched a few more videos first
I have the N type on order, but I realised I likely need the sma calibrations as well to use n to sma adapters?
wait.. the big one with the N connectors have the 201 datapoints on the unit?
According to this chart, both of the SAA2 versions do
Would be nice if they ever get any more back in stock at R&L.... been out for months now.
Nice video, excellent introduction to the device. I’m hoping that you will do a video on the TinySA spectrum analyzer as well!

Opinions vary. Most of the time, yes - I would say to calibrate the cable also. But the instructions in the NanoVNA don't mention that.
@@HamRadio2 thanks for confirming my thinking. You sold me on the nanaVNA. Thanks.
I really want one
how accurate is nanovna compare to diamond swr meter
So explain why I would need one of these?
Antenna analyzer to test impedance, SWR and other aspects of the coax and antenna system you are using.
I understand that, but why do i need this if i already have a manual antenna tuner? Unless you are doing lots of antenna experimentation this seems overkill.

I got one few days ago. Wondering if using a T connector, so both the vna and radio were connected to tuner, but I guess RF will kill the nanoVNA.
Don't do it!
Perfect video! Made my choice so much easier
What if the screen is blue when I turn it on?
How about this. Put it in a zip lock bag
for travel??
Can it measure distance to fault?
I don't know what that is
Just wondering if anyone here has succeeded in using QT software with the SAA-2N? I can't make it work.
Data points are far more important than the type of box it comes in or the carrying case.
True. The point of mentioning the carrying case wasn't to gauge its importance as compared to other features, though.
If I have a PL-259 connector on the coax coming from my antenna, will I be able to connect to this?
You need an N to SO-239 adapter for the SAA2N model.
@@loupgarou1261 thanks. I’m good.

2.0 the best program out there shut up and sit down
As far as the datapoints, 201 datapoints means that in a frequency sweep, it will measure 201 frequencies in the range that you are sweeping.

The higher in frequency you go, you want SMA connector. SMA goes to 18ghz. N is only good divided by 3. I would stay with SMA.
