  • We struggled with extreme heat and disappointing conditions to start our slaught...erm, "harvest" of Lionfish in the Gulf of Mexico.
    Shoutout to our good friends at ‪@sharkquestdiveshop‬ for taking us out there to help us decrease the population of this invasive specie.

    Any poisonous invasive species... You have my applause. I sincerely hope people aren't freaking out about this.

      I was close to freaking out about it, but I like to always look for more information first. I feel sorry for the lionfish, but I understand why they need to be removed from places where they shouldn't be.

    • @SymSne
      @SymSne 10 месяцев назад +16

      To add to this. We have become the apex predators of our world. We have the chance to also be responsible stewards of the life around us and to be aware of our impact on the natural order. Dealing with invasive species, especially ones so dangerous to native species as the lionfish, is just one of those tasks that needs to be done. Some people find joy and humor out of it, some find sadness that it needs to be done, most people a mixture of the two.

      we are allowed to hunt them year round, most divers in the gulf kill as many as they can. spearfishing is also the most ecological fishing technique so they are. its just a big problem.

To be honest, other than to eventually get to cave diving, spearfishing for lionfish might be the 2nd highest reason on my list of why I wanted to get certified as a diver. On top of being vital to the ecosystem, it is a ton of fun and they taste amazing.

    Same comment from me guys, I work in conservation in the UK 🇬🇧 and we have invasive species issues here too.
    The damage they do to the natural balance of our ecosystem is profound and I am often pulling up huge swaths of plants and such, that look pretty but need to be destroyed for the health of the rest of the species.
    These invasives have the potential to create mono-cultures that strip all biodiversity away from very important ecological niches. Good work, you’re allowed to enjoy it without feeling bad about it.

    It's amazing that in today's world everything is connected, you can fly across the planet in no time and travel everywhere. That's great. BUT a huge drawback is people bringing animals into environments where there is absolutely no natural predators or ways to keep their numbers at a good level. This has been happening a ton on land, sea, fresh water. It's really bad if nobody does anything to combat the negative effects of this.
    I wonder if it will get better or worse as time goes on. Great video!

    I wonder if divers actually could make a difference in the population if there was a real effort? Like if they implemented the sicker system as a sort of "incentive" for divers to show off, but they could also work with some sort of program to provide free meals. Basically divers would give the lion fish to certain spots, get stickers, then the fish would be used to make free meals to give away to families in need.
