I absolutey adore The Warning. I am Mexican and I am extremely proud of them. As a Mexican I feel excellently represented by them. They are the best of our culture and human values. As most Mexicans they are hardworking, loyal, perseverant, creative, imaginative, fun-loving, passionate, warm and kind. ¡Qué viva The Warning!❤❤❤

I see some of this song as a pep talk from Pau to herself, as reacting with anger to knuckleheads who criticize the band, only consumes her energy, and does nothing to the haters except give them more ammunition. Pau is quicker to anger than her sisters, but also has a sensitive soul. One of the hardest things to navigate in life is walking away from confrontation that will not serve you well. I'm a 60yr old nobody, and I struggle with this all the time. I can't imagine having that spotlight on 24-7, these ladies coping skills are off the charts. God bless them.

My interpretation is that critics tend to pick at the "Meat" of someones success. While ignoring the "Bones" of the hard work and commitment it takes to support it.
The fact that The Warning can evoke so many differing opinions through their lyrics, speaks volumes about their writing genius. Whatever you think they mean, own it.

It's not that Sharks is my favorite song on Keep Me Fed, it just took ten seconds to become my favorite song of their entire discography.
Many people have discredited the album because the lyrics were “uninteresting”, and being true that even they in several interviews have commented that they wanted something lighter, I still find in all the songs a quite intense depth, frankly. In fact, without being a conceptual album in the strict sense of the word as was QotMS, there is a very obvious common line of self-affirmation, to make it clear that despite all the doubts they may have and the outside noise, they are who they are and they will remain faithful to that.
There have been complaints about the production, the image, the evolution, everything, but I personally think that the step forward since Error has been enormous (and the results corroborate it). I am so convinced that, no matter how much effort it takes, I have decided to take the leap to the higher tiers in their Patreon to give back as much as possible all that they are giving me.

This is a case for me where at last I have more than one favourite song 😂
I couldn’t have put it better myself, this to me was definitely an extension of Narcissista, but with a more mature view and less of an attack on their critics. They’re a lot more grown up and self aware than they were, and it shows by how mature their songwriting is on this album. Plus it has helped them a lot by opening up to lyrical and musical collaborations, it’s all helped them to go forward. Their live performances have been off the charts this year, having seen them 3 times with a decent gap and a festival plus small venues you can see improvement as the time goes on. I would have given anything to have gone to Pol Rock, it was absolutely sensational!

"Keep you close like an enemy"...a reference to Sun Tzu, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer", i imagine. Vito Corleone quotes this in The Godfather. Keeping your enemies close is to keep an eagle eye on them, or to control them rather than them controlling you. Speaks to the erudition of Pau in particular, who has referred to Lady Macbeth in Red Hands (Never Fade),as I believe, at age 13!

Appreciated the analysis and share same sentiment as this my favorite song from many loved in the album.
My opinion differs from yours but perhaps complement it. These artists from the earliest songs demonstrated a very accurate and acute understanding of societal problems, addiction, materialism, individualism among others. From that, my take is this is about corporate America (not exclusive to one country). That world that exists based on power struggles where big fish always eats the small one in a never ending carnage.
Clearly written from that struggle position where survival is the every day hope The Warning eloquently and artistically give us a warning (how can they not) as to the stakes and risk of not knowing you place in the food chain. Another song critically exposing the lie of a fair and inclusive society in the working environment always destined to favor the shark.

Wonderful analysis, as always! The lyrics on this song are profound, amazing, and thought-provoking, as usual. Sharks is my fave on KMF as well. I think "It's the meat that really matters, the bones all end up falling out" speaks to the notion that industry, haters, and even fans opportunistically take whatever is financially or egotistically advantageous to them and ignore the rest of what makes these three ladies such special human beings. Others of their songs, particularly on KMF, allude to this as well. At the end of the song, the question, "does it really matter," may allude to the notion that the little slices of "meat" everyone else is nibbling on aren't the biggest part of how they see themselves. Dany, Pau, or Ale looking outward see themselves as complex and passionate human beings who happen to love music and love to share it, not just as potential hit machines to be evaluated by view and stream counts. Much of what's on their channel suggests to me that this is how they yearn to be seen by the rest of the world. "Tell me that I'm human." Honestly, not at all easy for a fan like me who thinks they aren't from this world!

The Warning's growing fame prompts some of the songs that we are seeing lately. I agree that the negativity coming from those that ware their inadequacies on their sleeves are toxic when they surface. Even the true fans that come to The Warning's defense find themselves spiraling into the toxicity while trying their best to lift them up. In many cases it's best to ignore these nay-sayers and not give any more fuel. The strength of the fans, the family and the girls' own unity and inner power combined is enough to stave off this bombardment of negativity. Thanks Nina!

As always, another great video, Nena. My initial thought was that of cancel culture but it possibly being about their haters is a definite. I remember when the video for their new version of Enter Sandman was about to drop, there were a dozen or more dislikes. No one had heard it yet. I commented that haters are gonna hate and The Warning gave me a like. The only line in the song I have sort of a problem with is "keep quiet, put the muscle on". Muscle? Not all lyrics are correct, so I was thinking it might be wrong. Shouldn't it be muzzle? That makes more sense to me. Love to hear your thoughts.

The lyrics in the description of the official lyrics video say muscle.
I think in combination with the "violence" line it stands for "don't give in to pointless discussions, flex your muscles and do your thing",
since there is no point in trying to argue or convince someone who hates you for who you are or what you stand for.

    @Scott_Diverscott 16 дней назад

As usual, your analysis is very insightful, Nena. I really enjoyed it. It's always surprising how impactful the negative words of a small few people can be and how de-motivating they are. Unfortunately it is one of the new realities of this modern era. The media culture now sits around like vultures, waiting for a single fault to emerge, so they can swoop in, quickly turning against those that they once held in high esteem, simply because of the convenience of having a quick. juicy story to serve up for views. It's sad that amazing peolpe, such as Dany, Pau and Ale are affected by this kind of thing, but it's a harsh reality that all of us face and those in the public eye face it far more than others. By exposing the true nature of this situation, they seem to call out those who act in this way, without actually pointing a finger at them and naming them, specifically. They are strong, insightful artists, who really address important issues in our culture. One of my favorite quotes is, "Where there is no struggle, there is no strength." The Warning certainly has a ton of strength. That's just one of the many reasons why they are admired by thousands upon thousands of fans, worldwide.

Thank you for the great analysis as always ! It's complete and accurate, so I don't really have something to add.
I think the girls made a brilliant move by putting out this song because they've managed to not stay silent and let the haters consume them, instead they address the issue in a creative way that doesn't make drama but let's them vent about it. I love the irony that the song does exactely the opposite of what's stated in the lyrics (don't react, swallow it down, don't show you're hurt) which is an extremely clever move.
This song is not only a musical masterpiece but also something that can be very inspiring to many people and help them overcome such issues in their own life.
The girls are very strong and mature for their age. It's incredible how they manage everything that's going on in their lives and how they stay true to themselves despite the criticism. I hope they can stay that way and wish them all the best.
I love your choice of pictures for the video, they're really amazing. Your new office looks great and the sound is really good now.
If I may give you a little advice from a photographers standpoint : you could try to turn your videolight down a bit so your face isn't as bright. This would allow the viewer to better discern your facial expressions and make a better connection with you. Unless of course, it is the effect you want to achieve.

If you have translucent curtains you could try closing them down, this will make the light softer. The window on your right side seems to be the biggest issue. I'd leave the one in front as is though, as it gives a very nice sparkle to your eyes.
Don't worry too much about it though, I'm probably the only one who notices and your content is much more important than the look of the videos.

I care far more about the music than the lyrics. I'm a music fan first. I do admire this band's lyrics, but I agree with their moving slightly away from profoundly deep stuff and having more fun with it. To me they're still basically almost teenagers, so they should avoid getting too preachy with life advice. As intelligent and articulate as they are in their second language, a slight language barrier still exists, but I try not to sweat that. 🤩🔥⚡

I think a part of the meaning is that they are aware that there are people around them who are simply waiting to for them to fail, to falter on their goals.
They must be aware that as their circle of associates gets larger, and the scale of their organisation grows with their success, not everyone will really be true, because of natural jealousies and insecurities. Sometimes peoples expectations of you are selfish and unreasonable.
From what I have seen they are the perfect example of strong, determined young women following a passion. Along the way they are learning to be business women, performers, managers, engaging with strangers, professional and managers of their own time and attention. All the while continuing to be creative musicians.
At such a young age they are quite remarkable, many have cracked under such pressure.
I look forward to all of the music, videos, performances and interviews they give us, but ultimately if it all came to an end tomorrow, I want them to stay together and true to each other.
They are a lot of fun to watch.

I completely forgot about the little sneak peaks the band released about each song’s meaning. I still think a lot of the lyrics could connect to loan sharks and how they deliberately look for people who struggle with money. “Don’t bleed” being a metaphor for “don’t go into debt”. I love we can all have different perspectives on the meaning behind their songs even though it might not have been what the band intended 😊

    Some of my interpretations:
"It's the meat that really matters"
The reference to meat appears a few times in the song. Sharks of course are carnivores and eat meat. To the shark the meat matters, as it is food to be digested and keeps the shark alive. To the one who might get eaten, meat (as in muscles) is what animates you and allows a chance to escape being eaten. Bones do not move on their own. The later line "keep quiet put the muscle on" seems to take the reference and applies it to their situation. Keeping quiet denies the sharks/critics the satisfaction they might crave from provoking a response. Similar to don't feed the trolls. Put the muscle on appears to mean build up your defenses, in this case psychological rather than physical. Lastly, the question "does it really matter?" appears. I suspect this is a rhetorical question that they have already answered. For now the answer is yes, it does. But that answer might be re-evaluated later.
"If we only bring silence, all we'll ever be is good as dead"
This is perhaps the realization that silence means they will have failed. For an entertainer, success means cheers, applause, or some other audience response. An actor portraying the villain might get a negative response to that character. No response at all equals failure. And, perhaps, it is the ultimate response to the critics. They are performing for the audience and not critics.

Could there also be a slight acknowledgment that without the haters and critics that maybe TW may not have come as far as they have.
They’ve seemed to historically used blatant criticism as a motivating tool throughout their careers.
It may also be an acknowledgement that no one, including them, is immune to the effects of their chosen profession and the demands of being a professional musician that plays into their personal lives.

But your nitzschean idea "What does not kill you makes you stronger" is indeed a factor in this buisness and shows the willpower of DPA.

I actually interpreted the meat and bones part differently. I took it as them sarcastically saying the meat really matters because that's what's on the surface, and the bones (aka the structure or the fundamentals) is thrown out. And thats why they ask "Does it really matter" at the end.
It's cool that people can see songs different ways.

    • @psychologyofrock
      @psychologyofrock  10 дней назад +1

Wonderful interpretation! I think it really could go both ways because really both the meat AND the bones are important for different reasons, so it is just a matter of how they were thinking about it when they wrote it :) Thanks for sharing!

My analysis of your analysis ( for what it is worth, which isn't a whole lot).
First I agree completely with your take as it aligns with the comments that Pau ( et al) made concerning the song. Pau, being the ridiculously talented lyricist that she is , appears to me to have done her Shakespearian trick of multi-meaning the story AND lyric lines. Particularly the line "Don't bleed" and the connected lyrics. I see it as a throw back at the commenters that only "love" them because they we kids. Young and cute and innocent ( considering she wrote Revenant at 12 I am not sure "innocent" is the right word). The "don't bleed" can also mean that these people want them stay as children and not become adult women. And adult women is certainly what they have become, with a vengence.
I still get knocked over by the fact that they write such inciteful songs in their second language!!!!!
I disagree, to some extent, in your comments that they write their songs to please their fans. I think that the reason they are so very good is the reason they they do not do that. They seem write and perform to "please" the song. That trait is pretty much the thing exhibited by most of the truly great music writer and performers. And the music keeps developing for their live performances as they find tweaks and twists that make the song better.
Thanks for your vid. I genuinely look forward to your breakdowns.

Thank you so much for sharing! I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that something that is likely contributing to this are the people that, for whatever reason, will always see them as they were in their original Enter Sandman cover, and can't accept that they have grown up. I've seen similar before, with Lindsey Stirling, quite a while back. We've read the posts where people are like "it's like they're my kids", and some people don't know how to let that go.

I think the sharks also refer to the big labels since they wanted a piece of them ever since they went viral. They've talked about how people wanted to be part of their journey but always trying to change them for the wrong reasons. In other words they wanted the meat; their looks, marketability, backstory etc. but not the bones; their style of music and the hard work it was build upon. I highly recommend their 2017 TedX talk (ruclips.net/video/pj5ue3M-v6o/видео.html) where they talk about this subject, their early careers and play three songs from the first album. 9:00 that. It's not only the haters, but also some "fans". Actually I don't think DPA pays any attention to those irrational haters, but they are aware that this new album might upset some of their old "fans". Probably not many but who are really vocal and loud as you mentioned.
The most cruel comments on Keep Me Fed that I've read have come from those angry fans. Angry because DPA are exploring new sounds and a different overall approach to their music.
Well, if that people are expecting young intelligent ladies to always sound the same, they should seek another band to listen, for The Warning most likely will keep exploring their own creative llmits and trying new formulas. They are not AC/DC, they are more like U2, Metallica, The Beatles. Bands that were heavily criticized and even abandoned by "some" of their hardcore fans when they "changed direction" even when their new material clearly was better and are now considered classics (Black Album, Achtung Baby, Sgt. Pepper's).
Dany, Pau and Ale are wiser beyond their years, they already understood, as the romans, that "sic transit gloria mundi" (all glory is fleeting) and that there's no guarantee that those who loves you today, won't hate you or forget you tomorrow.
And that could happen even if you never change, therefore why not to take risks? You can fall by trying new routes, but you can also reach the glory.
That's my take. My two cents and it's in english, a language that I can understand and speak much better that I can type it. DPA have exercised a very positive influence over me (and over many people more). Among other things, they have "pushed me" to improve my english typing/writing skills. Since I met The Warning, as Ale mentioned once, "I practice, I practice".

Hmm... If they do make an MV for Sharks, I can see it being pretty simple, with just a bunch of clips of bull sharks, tiger sharks, lemon sharks, silvertips, and hammerheads cruising around. In a way, sharks can be a metaphor for both the haters, and DPA themselves (not in the context of the song, obviously). Sharks seem to know that they are apex predators, and just like DPA, they ooze confidence. But also like DPA, sharks are actually not untouchable, there are bigger things out there, that want to eat them, just like there are haters who want to bring DPA down, out of jealousy, most likely. Sharks are often seen as ruthless and dangerous, like haters, but are vulnerable at the same time, they need protection by conservationists, and we, the fans, must also have DPA's backs, and show them that the haters are a very small, but noisy, minority.
