Hey! I remember when I began teaching and subbing how obtuse and off-putting some "older" teachers in the hallways...how unhelpful some of them were for NO GOOD REASON. Now, 26 years later, I have finally figured out why they were mean to me (and some still are). Because you are cute and vibrant (and VERY likeable), you pose a threat to these mundane and boring individuals who have forgotten the "why" of this business. I continue to LOVE my work and welcome any new teachers who venture into this world. You bring new ideas, energy and positive change that everybody needs. Sometimes fear does things to people that make them like that. So, Steph, my dear. Chin up, chest out. Fight the good fight. Teachers like me LOVE teachers like YOU!
I am a substitute teacher. I had 4th and 5th grade today. On the sub plans, it clearly stated, "Today is a minimum day, and therefore the kids don't have recess, but they have P.E. in lieu of recess". Even the principal went over the sub plans with me and told me, "They don't have recess, but they have P.E. instead". As the students and I were already walking out, a teacher from the classroom next door, started yelling something inaudible. I had to go back and ask her, "I'm sorry. What?" She said, "They don't have recess today!" I had to explain to her that they had P.E. in lieu of recess and even showed her the sub plans. This is every Tuesday, so, she knows. Some faculty and staff, will try to get you to mess up, I have never understood their reasoning.

I'm currently in the process of becoming a sub myself. I'm still pretty confused on what I'm doing. but I'm stumbling along. I just got my license. I believe now I'm suppose to actually apply to schools... I didn't realize how confusing it all can be. I give more props to teachers everyday I'm going through this. But this video helped me feel less afraid and alone. Thank you.

You can always wear bike shorts underneath your dresses - I highly reccomend especially with elementary. I’m an ancient “been doing this for a zillion years” sub and I’ve learned This lesson the hard way haha. Great video I hope you are still subbing / teaching 🙂

I start subbing in a few days and I am really nervous! Thanks for being so real and honest. I often get that weird vibe with teachers when I have observed in the past. Teachers seem to be either so supportive and sweet or so hostile and rude lol. I don't get it either, but I know I just gotta fake my confidence and try to be myself. :) I subbed cause I'm excited to see where you are now!
@@krystle8090 I did! I'll be honest, it was crazy. I was at a 7th grade middle school. The majority of the kids were very hyper and really disrespectful honestly. It was hard. It was also a title-1 school and I don't think I was prepared for the behavioral problems. Going to be trying elementary school next in hopes that I can find a grade level that suites me better. I also need to practice my classroom management skills.
@@melaniem828 omg! i would die in middle school! maybe you could try high school? that's what i exclusively sub for. they are older and usually have way less disrespect for you. i just take attendance, explain their assignment, and leave them be. sorry you had a rough first day , but im sure itll get better!! :)
@@melaniem828I had my first day today 4th grade and man they have a lot of energy. it had highs and lows definitely some kids were acting up knowing there teacher wasn’t there but I still managed to get a good bit done.
@@melaniem828one thing I think though with subbing it’s harder to manage classes in general because kids in younger years try so hard to make it a free day. Sadly some subs don’t have them do anything and that’s part of it.

I really appreciate your share, today was the last day of training and the real deal is tomorrow. I was so nervous all the things I practice and learn suddenly go to the trash because in my brain I know and am ready. Then boom my mouth said the wrong thing, so thanks for the heads-up.

I've been subing for three years at a highly regarded MS. Yet, as always, there are groups of students that are real trouble makers and really hard to deal with. I took over a classrom midyear and became a long term sub. When I was asked to grade and comment on the outgoing 8th graders portfolio presentations where some parents attend, the bad apples suddenly developed an attitude adjustment. "What do I need to do to get an A on my portfolio?" -- "Are you a hard grader?" etc. Some started to bring me gifts, candy, coffee mugs what have you. Anyway, I thought it was funny.
Having to pee all day. Smelling like nervous sweat at the end of the day. Bitchy teacher colleagues. Having been in a field like this before, this all sounds familiar!
I just got hired as a sub for my local school district and they are just throwing me in with no orientation or anything. Orientation doesn’t usually happen until July but since I was hired mid semester, I just won’t be having any training. Wish me luck for my potential first day tomorrow 🤞🏻
I just got an offer to work for a substitute teacher agency and I am extremely worried because I am mentally challenged and have a hard time trying to accept the offer.
Had no idea other teachers have a dendency to be rude. That's so unnecessary... And I thought we left clique behavior behind when we were children. I definitely won't be hanging out with other teachers.

@@alexisanderson9674 Each county has a different staffing site. So let's say you'd like to work in Orange county. Just look up Orange County school district site. If you scroll you'll find job openings. For my county after I applied and the interview they tell you everything you need to do. You may need to do fingerprinting and a drug screening after being accepted. You may also need to do a training course and those are not difficult.

I started my first day as a half day too!!! They put me in a 2nd grade special ed class. They were the best kids 🫶❤️
I just did my first sub job last week and it was so different for me. Everyone was super friendly and welcoming to me.

I think it's because they don't see subs as real teachers. Also, could it be that are jealous because subs don't have as much work load as they do?

Same as a full time teacher, some coworkers can be very sweet and helpful and collaborative but at times you may have some who are very unsupportive.
