Hello! My name is Jerry. I am legally blind, and love 3D printing! I am also the Media-Marketing Manager for a local non-profit that provides free services to the blind and visually impaired of our community. I loved this video and am excited to view what you have coming up!

Jerry, I am so happy to meet you! If you have any advice or suggestions of ways you've used 3D printing that is helpful to visually impaired people we would love to hear more. Reese and I have experiences, but she is not yet an adult so I would think there are things we might not have thought about or encountered yet. If you're interested in collaborating sometime in the future, please feel free to email us at sales@filamentstories.com. ❤❤

This was an OUTSTANDING video, I very much look forward to more of them. The space you have curated for a studio is so nice, hopefully you can keep up with the increase in video production. While not visually impaired… beyond color blind, and lasik… helping other is what got me into creating and making. I would love to hear new ways to help that can make a big difference. Thank you and God Bless.

    Hi Courtney,
I resonated so hard to the pilgrim village map! My son is totally blind and I just spent an entire week converting a 10 puzzle escape room into braille - which only took him an hour to complete. You and your daughter's plan to use your platform to help others is amazing, particularly given the cost of much of the assistive options out there. ❤

As you mentioned this yourself, the massive amount of models that the community provides to each other for free or quite fair prices is just phenomenal and a huge part of the reason I got my first printer as well. (long read)
Thank you for having Reese on and for sharing her story and how you got into 3D printing. I love these stories and think they're important to share as people often don't realize the importance or affects of something until it's told to them. And then to reinforce it by talking about it more frequently then one off videos. But importantly for this one, that Reese came to you to tell you she's ready.
There are so many stories that are now coming to light about early content creators/streamers involving their kids and the kids, now young adults or older, going "I don't want to be involved in these. Take the videos/streams down". Combined with history of how those with disabilities are treated, stereotyped, etc. and to have Reese do this of her own accord means a lot. Her interactions and what she talks about reminds me of the WeThe15 ad campaign where it's a number of individuals explaining "we're just normal people." The comments on this video show that too, as people are identifying with how you got into the field and participating in a similar way.
It reminds me of some comments I made years ago: how well do our slicers work for screen readers? How accessible are the screens/apps for our printers? Is there a way to make repairs/maintenance/and usage of a printer easier if not fully possible for someone with a visual impairment, problems hearing, limited motion, etc.? A big moment I know was people asking how to use braille and similar in PrusaSlicer's text tool and they indicated "it's just a font" and even demoed it. There is much to do and I don't see the cheaper brands doing R&D so they aren't going to do it, and the more expensive/premium brands are currently beating each other's communities over trivial technicalities... so it's not looking good. But more progress and visibility are good and hopefully inspire people to take a moment and go "let me add the alt text to a pic on Twitter" "let me add some tactile elements to that model so it can be assembled without needing eyesight or fine motor skills" and hopefully "let's make the tools we use more accessible"
I put this at the end because otherwise it felt like I was trying to talk about my own experiences instead of the video...
I know this "how I got started" story. I got into programming out of interest, out of having family who did it to an extent, and out of a desire to try and create/modify video games. And then my aunt made a comment at a family gathering. My younger cousin was born and lived what is often called a normal life for nearly 3 years. Then one day... like a switch, he stopped being normal. He was diagnosed as non-verbal autistic and my aunt's family had to adapt and change. They didn't have the money, the space, the environment. My uncle was in denial for a number of years. A non-verbal autistic individual doesn't operate the same as an able-bodied/minded individual, and so they shouldn't be expected to learn and interact like them. One place this comes in is PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System). Best worded as a series of (copyright) cartoon/pictures to explain everything. How they feel, what they want, for identification, and more. Notice that (copyright) part... they are expensive. And also, they're not convenient in the modern computer era, having a small backpack of containers, each with a category of cards. My aunt would ask what my cousin wanted, my cousin would pull out a sleeve, take out a card, and attach one or more to a board to make a sentence. Tablets exist for this, but they were going for $10k or more, and that's before you pay for the digital versions of PECS themselves. So, to the point, my aunt told us about how expensive it all was and I stopped what I was doing for a few months and worked on my own digital version of the software. Literally able to perform the container -> individual card selection and then a button that would do text to speech so my cousin could speak. Unfortunately, that software was on a hard drive that crashed and my aunt informed me that as great as it was, she couldn't afford to get the real cards which are used for teaching. So just grabbing pictures off the internet was out of the options as my cousin wouldn't recognize them.
Years later, I came across a tweet from Grafit and Irblinx talking about the CogniTimer (RUclips doesn't like links in comments, find it on Printables) which is a visual way to explain time to someone who doesn't understand numbers. There's a nice little writeup about it on the page. My aunt loved it, though I didn't follow up if it got any use outside of me explaining it. While I am also diagnosed on the spectrum, I have the high-functioning Asperger's Syndrome and can generally live a normal life. But it still is some area that I fixate on. My cousin learned late in life they have celiac disease? I became very focused on food allergies (and very easily annoyed over avoiding foods simply because it makes someone feel better, as it has meant friends and family now can't trust "gluten free" and other dietary restrictions because "feels better" means "don't need to be as strict". Some flour in a roux is fine for "feels better" but can leave my cousin doubled over in pain). I became focused on accessibility in my fiend of tech, watching the Paraloympics, and more. It became a thing that grabbed my attention and I want to do what I can to make sure those people can live a normal life as opposed to me expecting them to do more to get to the same level as me.
And my last point, is that's kinda the hook of 3D printing. To repeat a quote my family and friends have heard me say: it's not about what I'm going to do, it's about the potential of what it can do. Don't get a 3D printer only when you think of a reason for it, get one so that you can see where it has been used or can be used. Not everyone can 3D model, but if you try, you may have 3D printing become a hammer and everything else a nail. It's a family member telling me that their young kids (in this case, 4 y/o) decided it would be fun to hide the cabinet mount for a compost bin... and 3D printing one based off pics alone so it didn't become trash. It's making a stand for something that didn't fit with a commercial solution, or decor that require more time or tools then I care to deal with (yes yes, some PVC and wood can do a job 10 times better and faster then a 3D printer can, but I can press print and walk away and have it be done when I come back later... can't do that with PVC and wood). I now have a number of friends with 3D printers, not because they went "I want a 3D printer" even though they saw them online, at Maker Faires, etc. But because they came over my home and I went "check this out", they asked about something, and within minutes I had started a print for what they asked about. It was that moment they realized where it fit in for them.
Once you find a fit, the pieces all come together. Thanks to you and Reese for the story and background, and for possibly bringing a bunch of spread out people together in a place they can interact with others in similar situations.

How interesting for me to happen across your channel and this video in particular, as I am a sighted person who as a kid went to school with a couple of blind kids, and I became so fascinated with Braille that I taught myself (at about 10 or 11) to read and write it. This was late 70s and I'm pushing 60 now and I still do it. Just for myself...I've remained in love with Braille for all these years! I've now become a 3D printing enthusiast (more like casual hobbyist), and in my searches for interesting things to print, I've actually specifically looked for Braille-related items. Some folks have come up with some cool things...even some Braille slates! Love it!

This video is the best thing ever! Better than all the 3d printed lessons and reviews .. love the idea. There should be more channels with 3d printing and people with special disabilities and talents

I absolutely love this! Thank you for sharing your story. My husband and mom are both blind and went blind late in life so I try so hard to make life accessible to them. Now I might invest in a 3D printer.

My capstone for 3d design and printing degree was creating a braille fidget toy! I had lots of fun making it and I learned so much about blindness and lack of accessable education for people with vision impairment. I LOVE this idea and if you need any design help let me know! I ultimately want to make a fully 3d printed braille machine! If you have any insight I'd love to here it. Much love

I have to say and you dont know this but you and your daughter and another creator in this community @loyalmoses are the reasons i have dived into this world and purchased 2 printers and filaments and such. I wouldnt have pulled the trigger on getting into it if it wasnt for you. Ive started my own channel and i want to thank you. Ive started my own comp to help focus on things for special needs and those with disability's. I am on the start of this journey but i wouldn't even be at that if it wasnt for yall and loyal. of course i do plan to make plenty of the cool toys and trinkets. Again thank you and you are apart of my bucket list. love to meet yall some day as i want to me loyal as well. Also love the work you did with 3dprenty. another awesome creator. thank you for introducing me to his channel as well. Thank you.. Would be a honor if yall joined my journey. Yall have a fan for life and viewer for life.. And your the super cool people..

Terry, thank you so much! We are reading every comment to Reese. I thought this was going to be hard for her, but she has been so happy to hear so many supporting comments. She is excited about doing more videos and sharing ways 3D printing can help visually impaired people. As a parent, I am SO proud of her. I will pass on your kind message and support!

Congratulations to you all for sharing your story AND for kicking-off a sub-series of videos of 3D prints for the visually impaired! I know not all of them can be about miniature buildings, but I'd be honored if one of them is and I can help you!!!

Thanks for sharing this touching story with us. I think it must have been an difficult decision to do or not. (Since I also have a daughter) Media give a child sooo much option to learn, experience and share but it unfortunately also has room for negative items.
Looking forward to see your journey on that!
