galadriel being a bully, perfect kid above all others resorting to violence to solve her issues while the kids in the land of light are persecuting her for being superior to them...is the most...asinine take on elves I could've ever imagined. Wild, since even tolkien didn't want to write galadriel nor even any other full blooded elf to be a main character. Even the professor knew and admitted, as a human, he wouldn't give justice to the endless ones. Then these guys came...They also denatured the very basis of hobbits: they,re meant to live in abundance and without hardship. Thus why their culture doesn't go into defence modes or needs for weapons or shelter really, aside from maybe against big rain...nomadic harfeet should've also lived easy lives, without looming threats...but then they also hit us with the chant: nobody walks alone, nobody goes off trail...whilst having a tome of all the people they left to walk alone and off trail and even having idioms about going off trail meaning death, thus a strange cultural culling practice of leaving the perceived weaker link to die. Wtf kinda hobbits are these?!

Yea, it feels like they made elves seem just like normal humans in this show. Galadriel did not act like someone who is as old as she is and has seen whatever she's seen. I also found the Harfoots pretty dislikable for some reason. I think it's the hypocrisy of the chant 😂

the problem with the show is that because it is set in the second age most casual viewers who do not know Tolkien's canon story will not pick up on how much lore breaking is present in RoP. Its bad.

I definitely fall into the not familiar with the lore category, but some of the things in this show were just so ridiculous even I found it hard to believe they were part of the original work.

    • @SullyRose15
      @SullyRose15 2 месяца назад +1

@@JessInDreams7 About 90% of this show is made up (including original characters too), and the actual lore has been reduced to just small references. Its very clear that the people in charge just don't care. And that's just the lore breaking, another problem with the show was that its terribly written and they don't keep anything consistent, there's no structure, and they can't keep track of time.
BTW: They are shrinking all the events of the second age in which Sauron and the elves make the rings and go war, down into about a few weeks, when the whole second age lasted 3,441 years. Its bizarre and frustrating.

  • @apollomars1678
    @apollomars1678 2 месяца назад +18

okay i will get some actual lore explanation.
Tolkien and some guys in university were talking about awesome myths, folklore, naturalism-fantasy, lyrics and old extinct languages.
They get drafted into WW1. All of them die. Except Tolkien. One dude died in his arms, asking him to write down these stories, they spoke about.
Tolkien becoming a Prof. in medieval history and languages etc. finally got a stable job and enough authority to get some publisher to publish his works. Tolkien was raised in Southafrica by a black nanny and his mother, the family returned back to UK early in live and he saw the strong contrast of middle England and industrial cities.
The book is meant to represent English epos history. Something like the nordic tales for the germanics or nordmans, but closer to the roman history of a former colony (province) of the roman empire. The siegfried-saga and the beowulf-saga was a big influence. Tolkien wrote about these sagas too.
Now the world of middleearth. Age1
there is something, that i will call for easy understanding gods, naturalistic in their thematics, one is the god of metals and smithing and one the god of sea etc. And they have a god, that is kinda satan of this world. The 2nd most powerful god, who got defeated after attempting a coup. He became/was always evil and is called melkhor. He is the dude, who was resposible for the destruction of these 2 shiny trees. the sun and moon was created by the fruits of these trees.
The elves always remember these trees and love this light, that is magical, like a drug, like a stolen paradise, you have experienced yourself. galadriel is famous for being so beautiful (and nearly 2m tall) and magical shining, that she is compared to the trees. A dude loved her looks, tried to get a single strand of her hair and was denied. So this dude made 3 shiny orbs in honour of his love to galadriel=>the trees. These orbs were stolen by melkhor. In their desire for this magical beauty, they travelled to middle-earth over an ocean to get these orbs back. To get these boats, they kill some of their own kin. Bad thing to do, they get cursed for it. They burn these ships at arrival.
Others, who didn't got boats had to walk a horrible northern path over an ice-dessert, many died in this group. (the northern army, galadriel never ruled this army, she was the ruler of a kingdom......later..because his family was still alive at this time, explicit her husband, who lead armies...she was more the magical women in the kingdom, doing administrative and diplomatic stuff.....galadriel on a battlefield is comical, because her presence near an orc would erase the orc from existence...she is powerful in a different way...she doesnt need a damn sword...it is like a tank wielding a medieval sword....like not a robot, an actual tank with a sword stuck to the side for "close combat"...)
In a millennia long fight melkhor get defeated, the dwarfs get their big home prior to Moria destroyed by elves, most of the big elven lords die in the fight against melkhor and a lot of them get killed to extinction by the evil forces. The humans have a similar state. Some human sees a elven women in a forest, falls in love with her, shows himself, she falls in love with him, her father is against the marriage with some random human, so he gives him a job impossible to achieve, get one of these orbs. the human with his elven women sneak into the enemy HQ, steal an orb, an action 100.000 armed elven wouldn't have achieved, trust me, they tried it and didn't reached the entrance. Orb is given to the father, he accepts the marriage. the endresult of the marriage is elrond and his twin brother. they have dark hair in contrast to other elvens of this noble family, because the human had black hair.
After a lot of suffering, the elven, who didn't left for the orbs realize, that this evil god done enough damage. These gods and a big army of elven from beyond the sea appear, defeat the evil god and remove him from existence and the elves destroy his empire. In this battle the world is damaged and the god make the world a globe, they protect the paradise-land of the elvens behind the horizon, you can't sail to them as a human and without the correct mindset etc. the old world and the main geographic of the world in age1 sink into the ocean.
    Age 2 (this show)
The humans and the half elven dudes, who don't want to become elven, get a island from the gods, numenor, a star-shaped island. They live for 200-800years as a gift for their loyality to the elven in Age1 in contrast to the evil humans. They are good at sea travelling. They will colonise middleearth and bring it culture and science. They are an analogy for the british empire and the roman empire. They have a good group, the faithfull, who supported a princess, who never became queen. They are colonists, who support mere humans in their cultural adaptation. They are the lords of these humans, keep in mind, numenorians are racists, but they live longer than regular humans, so regular humans are racial inferiour to them and the later numenorian colonial areas have this view of shrinking power and corruption, because they are numenorian kingdoms, who can not handle the cultural and scientific development of people, who can train these skills over centuries. Gondor and Andor are the big numenorian kingdoms with Umbar, the evil kingdom. that evil kingdom is controlled by the other numenorian group, the kingsmen, who believe on the official line of succession by the last numenorian king, who lead by his actions to the biggest power and the destruction of the numenorians empire. The island sinks into the sea by this destruction.
While the faithful faction is creating foreign colonial cultural nations (like australia, canada or southafrica has British culture), the kingsmen are exploiting colonists. They had the same racist mindset, like the faithful faction, but they acted with a bad intention in their colonies in their efforts to get more power and resources out of these colonies.
The dwarfs after the destruction of their home by the elves move to moria. they hate elves, but they like elrond, who is kinda an half-elven dude and elrodn gets the dwarfen view about elves by his own unique position. He is more or less the sole factor to reconnect the bind between dwarfs and elven nations. He creates with the dude, who will create the elven rings and Durin a kingdom next to Moria, a multicultural kingdom with humans, elves and dwarfs working together. Durin is a big thing, because Durin is the first dwarf. dwarfs were the firs tbeings in middleearth and they look kinda the same, because they were created by a singular god (big nono for gods). this singular god was unable to give them the last touch of live and because he was triggerhappy the other gods made the dwarfs sleep and wake up with live at the end, so they were actual the lastest big race, who came to existence, while being the first created race. female dwarfs have beards, because they look like their god. singular creator => non binary race in looks. Even elven, who knew dwarfs for millennia as friends were unable to recognize a women-dwarf by her looks. Only dwarfs see the difference. The first dwarf, who woke up, was Durin and he became the king. Durin died, but he was promissed to be reborn for 7? times and one of these reborned versions of Durin is this friend of elrond.....his father is a durin-reborned version too......awkward, but not fully problematic, like in the show.
Sauron was already the biggest general of the evil god, his most powerful wizard. He was famous for butchering thousands of elven warriors. He is after the death of the evil god the most evil being still in existence. these things, balrogs, dragons, they are analogies for tanks and flamethrowers and gas-attacks on a ww1-battlefield destroying whole divisions by themself. Sauron is more like the mindset behind the use of these things as a "good thing" to win a war. he enjoys craftiness in creating suffering. He will present themself in this multicultural kingdom and in numenorian society later as a presente rof gifts as a handsome blond elven dude and he will give rings with some nice magical features. But nothing major. He will team up with the elven smith dude and create some better rings. rings, who will be taken by him later, while planning the destruction of this elven kingdom. While he gives away these gifts, the orcs armies under his control conquer middle earth slowly. He is using his attack onto this multiculty-kingdom to get all these rings back. He will gift them later to humans and dwarfs, except ONE ring. The elven smith dude will create without him 3 elven rings and will make A LOT of effort to hide these creations from him. they will never be corrupted by Sauron. He will never get one of these rings. Sauron will later be responsible for corrupting the numenorian kingsmen to attack the elven paradise world, because they live for eternality and the numenorians want to get immortality too. It fails, Numenorian star-island will sink and sauron will sink with the island.
Sauron is such a powerful being, that he can still exist without a body, explicit with the ONE ring, who gives him a boost in magical energy. He will disappear, when Isildur cuts the rings away from him for this reason.
    Age3 (the actual movies)
just watch the movies, they explain it good enough.

The Dwarves storyline feels entirely different from the others (which are somewhat linked throught the episodes, like Galadriel with Numenor, the Hobbit with the Wizard, Gil-Galad with Celembrimbor, etc.)
I believe this is why the Dwarves have the best amongst the mediocre, as they are limited to their kingdom under the mountain which gives them an advantage for simplicity (as fourth wall movies, which heavily focus on dialogues and character dev.)
The few times Durin leaves on diplomatic missions are only short scenes with the elves, so they avoid the whole blunder that is Galadriel, the Harfoots and Numenor.

In the books Sauron is also handsome but more in a twink kind of way. Like, he’s not just handsome, when he’s in disguise and tries to befriend elves, he’s beautiful. He’s this really good-looking, innocent-looking guy, that is nice and brings gifts, and is like “heeeey let’s make some rings hmm?” and so they believe him. Ironically, Galadriel is one of the few people that don’t believe his shit, and she knows from the beginning that he’s suspicious.
They did mess up Galadriel’s character really bad… if they wanted they even could have pulled off the “girl boss” nature of her character, but they didn’t because they suck.
Also at this point in time (in second age) Galadriel is supposed to have husband (which the show removed from the picture so that she could be shipped with Sauron for some reason) and a daughter…

This show is definitely a bad fan-fiction written by someone who has never actually read Tolkien’s books but they don’t care about the actual lore because they just wanted to write a story set in Middle Earth (even though their story has nothing to do with Tolkien’s characters or story)…..that is what Rings of Power is, in a nutshell. TL/dr: Rings of Power is *BAD*

The orcs hate daylight so they dig a trench -- during daylight -- for miles across a plain -- to fetch up against the only tree for miles. They force a very un-Elf-like Elf to start cutting down the massive tree, because Elves love and nurture trees and orcs are cruel.
The screen time could have been used much better.
The noble people of Numenor, demi-godlike in the books, are a grubby rabble. They sail their mighty ships by holding the lines taut by muscle strength alone, not having developed the cleat or the winch. But "The sea is always right!"
The tone is wrong, the grace and majesty of Tolkien are missing. It's a mediocre generic fantasy series with characters whose names are lifted from Tolkien but no other connection.

You hit a lot of the problems. I've argued ad nauseum that Galadriel is meant to be kinda awful. So not liking her seems is correct. It's kinda why a lot of the 'girlboss' criticism were unfair. It was just a weird show where Galadriel was meant to be messed up (to require that she develop or experience redemption to become the saintly figure of LOTR), but then is treated as an awe-inspiring saint in the next scene. For the record, Season 2 alters (retcons) Halbrand immediately. In season 1, he was absurdly benign for a lot of it. It was kinda obvious ("why is this underdeveloped character here? why is he blandly nice? Oh, he's Sauron").
A key problem is the visual spectacle. Nerds would be intrigued to see Numanor of the Dwarf kingdoms at the peak of their power. They lurked in LOTR. There were ruins of great kingdoms that had faded or fallen prey to corruption. As you said scenes of the dwarf kingdom or Numanor are beautiful. Well, the establishing shots are beautiful, but then the subsequent scenes often feel teensy tiny. Numanor is grand, but then it's military isn't hardened soldiers so much as theatre kids in plastic armor. And the politics are reminiscent of southpark ("they took our jobs.").

So far I'm liking Sauron's character more in Season 2. He's at least working towards some type of goal now I guess...Galadriel though, she seems like she hasn't really changed at all. I totally agree with the visuals of these places being initially awe-inspiring, but then the moment we zoom into actual scenes of things happening, all of that is wasted.

It does feel like they are trying to include too much, which may pay off as the story continues, but I agree that it’s so poorly written in most parts that it’s hard to really care about the characters and what happens to them.

The show is beautiful and amazing. It just people are haters, inpatient, and full of privilege. It's only been 3 episodes.

It is beautiful, aesthetically. You can tell they have a lot of budget. But you can't deny that they took the characters that people beloved and they made their own story. Which is frankly disrespectful to all the fans of the original work. It is a fan's right to show their and say their opinions. The fans are the target audience. The current cast even makes you feel bad if you don't like their shitty show. Beautiful scenes don't make for a good story

No, it's just that we can recognise it's objectively bad. I really wanted to love it. But there's so many issues - not even lore issues, just shitty costumes, bad acting, nonsensical storylines, the worst dialogue I've ever heard, etc etc

"i've seen the original movies". what does that mean? you've seen the Jackson adaptation? that is as if someone says "i saw the original movie about the bible with Charlton Heston!"

My bad, I should've said the movie adaptation 😅 This show seems to be referencing those movies more than the actual written source material.

Inconsequential. If casual fans don’t even like Rings Of Power, then what chance does the show have? Who is gonna watch it? Not the hard core fans. Not the casual fans.
