My father was born in 1919 in Oberwart, Austria and I believe that was the time that Hungary and Austria were still one empire. Due to that fact he learned Hungarian, German and even Latin and of course English when he came to Canada. I never thought much of my Hungarian background but remember my dad using phrases that were not German when he saw certain friends and my mother using certain phrases that I didn't understand either. Also there was Hungarian influence in our foods that we ate, including Goulash and Turos Csusza ( a dish I thought my dad invented!) among other things. I never learned Hungarian but spoke fluent German. When I look back now I see that most of my relatives married Hungarians because even though Austria and Hungary became two countries many Hungarians settled in Austria, specially in the town of Oberwart. I have now come full circle and am in a long term relationship with my bf that is 100% Hungarian, started cooking goulash like my mother and am trying to learn Hungarian so I can communicate with my bf's mom who is 95. I also still embrace my Austrian and German traditions. I just discovered your channel and am enjoying it immensely :)

I am so glad you are cooking some awesome Hungarian food! And found new motivation to speak in Hungarian! We do offer some language learning opportunities at MagyarMarketing.com -- it isn't easy, but of course you know that!

Enjoyed listening to your podcast very much, Liz! Most interesting and informative. My parents came from Hungary to Canada in 1956 where myself and my siblings were born, except for my eldest sister who was born there. Love our culture so much! I can speak and understand Hungarian but reading and writing not so much. Love to cook all kinds of Magyar food for my family. My husband is Italian, so I also cook Italian food. We embraced both our heritage and carry on all the traditions we grew up with our children and granddaughters. Congratulations and looking forward to listening to more podcasts from HUNGARIAN LIVING. ❤🇭🇺
