Surah Al-Ma'arij (“The Ascending Stairways”) Verses 11-25 Yubaşşarūnahum ۚ Yawaddu Al-Mujrimu Law Yaftadī Min `Adhābi Yawmi'idhin Bibanīhi Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. (Al-Ma'arij 70:11) يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ Wa Şāĥibatihi Wa 'Akhīhi And his wife and his brother, (Al-Ma'arij 70:12) وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ Wa Faşīlatihi Allatī Tu'uwyhi And his kindred who sheltered him, (Al-Ma'arij 70:13) وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْويهِ Wa Man Fī Al-'Arđi Jamī`āan Thumma Yunjīhi And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. (Al-Ma'arij 70:14) وَمَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ جَمِيعا ً ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ Kallā ۖ 'Innahā Lažá By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! (Al-Ma'arij 70:15) كَلاَّ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَى Nazzā`atan Lilshshawá Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! (Al-Ma'arij 70:16) نَزَّاعَة ً لِلشَّوَى Tad`ū Man 'Adbara Wa Tawallá Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allāh, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allāh)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubī, Vol. 18, Page 289] (Al-Ma'arij 70:17) تَدْعُوا مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّى Wa Jama`a Fa'aw`á And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allāh). (Al-Ma'arij 70:18) وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَى 'Inna Al-'Insāna Khuliqa Halū`āan Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; (Al-Ma'arij 70:19) إِنَّ الإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعاً 'Idhā Massahu Ash-Sharru Jazū`āan Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (Al-Ma'arij 70:20) إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعاً Wa 'Idhā Massahu Al-Khayru Manū`āan And niggardly when good touches him;- (Al-Ma'arij 70:21) وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعاً 'Illā Al-Muşallīna Except those devoted to Salāt (prayers). (Al-Ma'arij 70:22) إِلاَّ الْمُصَلِّينَ Al-Ladhīna Hum `Alá Şalātihim Dā'imūna Those who remain constant in their Salāt (prayers); (Al-Ma'arij 70:23) الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلاَتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ Wa Al-Ladhīna Fī 'Amwālihim Ĥaqqun Ma`lūmun And those in whose wealth there is a known right, (Al-Ma'arij 70:24) وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَعْلُومٌ Lilssā'ili Wa Al-Maĥrūmi For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); (Al-Ma'arij 70:25) لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ
