This tournament was "4 singles and 1 doubles" system (one player played in 2 singles, the other two players were paired in doubles and each of the two played in 1 singles) . Yugo was traditionally good at doubles. And at that time the best pair in Europe, Lupulesku & Primorac could be paired. So on one hand Yugo had great advantage, but on the other hand, they had to play the specialist of doubles (probably the best in the world), Z. Kalinic only at singles... (Sorry for my poor English

what an exciting match! Chilling drama down too the last points. It was an open affair and respect to both players, could have gone either way but only one can win in the end.

it would be nice that you posted also primorac - waldner just one before. it was easy 2-0 for primorac. i remember that being proud. it was amazing world final where persson won lupulescu 2-1, 25-23 i think in third. Lupi and Zoki, especially zoki was crying.

waldner was very angry and responsable in this moment because primorac won him like nobody did for years. i think something like 21-17, 21-10. before this match it was 2-1 for yugoslavia.

European, worldclass, lefty penholder very unusual and there probably wont be anymore. Also I hope Waldner changed barbers after this.

Am I watching the same match? "Could have gone either way"? Waldner blew Kalinic out of the water, not even close.

Never saw that player... Technically very weak. I don't even know how he made it to that level.

He was a doubles specialist, actually a World Champion in doubles.Placing a lefty against Waldner was never a good idea.Given the fact that his son is a world class basketball player he was probably a decent athlete.

One of the best servers in Europe, with huge reach and a pretty good forehand for a giant.Mosty a doubles player.
He beat Waldner in the group stages(a lefty beating Waldner was very uncommon,a lefty penholder almost impossible).
