@@Angie2343 Yep. Its actually a pretty cool little story. Or maybe Mickey had too powerful of an attack and that set the fire in the first place. I actually knew the real reason why the fire started: So the animatronic shot the first round of fire and as the next was coming up the mouth stopped moving and it’s head caught fire.
I retired from the DFD (Disneyland Fire Dept) in 2010. I was a Fire Captain in charge of Disney’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) . I can only speak of the fire protection that was on site when I worked there. With all the financial strain on Disney since COVID I’m sure there have been many personnel cuts, maybe even effecting their Fire Protection. Each night there are about 10 Firefighters stationed around the Park to protect the property from Pyro ( fireworks fall out ) . There was 3 fire trucks on property and 1 fire boat. During the Fantasmic show there is a firefighter stationed inside the cabin behind the Dragon. He has access to two fire hoses and fuel shut off. There is also a ERT crew of 4 firefighters in the Park from 6am - 11:30pm sometimes later depending if there is a additional Pyro show. They have access to the fire boat that can reach the island. From what I can see from this video there was a attempt to shoot water on the fire but that was very brief as the fire stream disappeared in about 1 minute. I did not see the Fire Boat deployed. Fire Fighters can reach the island via the barges. I did not see any barges but they could reach the island from the other side of the island. Anaheim Fire Department (AFD )should have been called but who knows if they know how to get to the island unless a DFD firefighter shows them how. Once AFD is on property they will take over the incident.
That’s exactly what I thought when I saw it.-budget cuts. (Grew up there, have seen this show many times. Know all about Disney safety. ) Many people have blinders on but Disney is actually in major financial trouble. They have been for some time. Budget cuts and endless price increases have also brought about layoffs. This type of thing scares me because it means that safety checks and maintenance may be being overlooked. Rides are breaking down ALL THE TIME now. Just waiting for the other shoe to drop and to here about a ride malfunction causing a bunch of people to get killed. (As in the case of thunder mountain railroad) it’s only a matter of time.
The last time I visited Disneyland will be the last time. I got to ride Splash Mountain twice. The second time, the line was over an hour. I wanted to ride a third time after dinner, but it was closed for repairs.
@@fourlittlebirds6166 Disney is in big financial trouble. Their movies the last 2 to 3 years have been seen big losses. The parks seem to be the only profitable business they have, and now even that is showing cracks.
This video is important. It can be used to investigate what caused it. If you look closely, the dragon was supposed to let out the fire fully, but it did not, it let out only some fire, with smoke. So maybe something got stuck that prevent the gas from flowing out fully. Maybe the valve inside the dragon’s mouth did not open properly. The fire was ignited, but the gas was not fully let out, and it accumulated inside the head.
Yeah, it probably all just built up in the head, haven’t seen the show in a while but if I remember a charge is supposed to fire off from the head after Mickey defeats her, it looks like that lit the excess gas and caused the initial fire.
If you look closely at 0:50 you can see some kind of fluid dripping from the dragon's mouth. I reckon this was the gasoline for the fire-breathing effect. Obviously some connector or pipe broke and caused it to empty into the head, then when the igniter tried to go off again it caused the fire to start.
This is so terrifying. The epic music and suddenly seeing all the fire, the smoke, bits of it falling off, people starting to realize what's happening. Nightmare fuel

thank you even though i wasn't supposed to do that i really wanted to see if the dragon could be saved :( but sadly it wasnt i ended up crying on the live stream i was doing at that time
Happened at 11 PM, an hour before St. Georges Day (who killed the dragon), but in this plot it was MIckey who killed the dragon. There are probably lots of disgruntled employees who were or are about to be laid off. It seems odd that an animatronic made of such fire resistant material would burn completely and so fast. It has lasted for many decades so far. I like how the comical frontierland music kicked in immediately after, just like a comedy sketch. Frank Drebin would say, "Move Along, Nothing To See Here!"
Looks like a scene from police squad…. All the cast members waving people out with their backs turned to the fire… “Move along, nothing to see here, move along”
Looking at the footage, it looks like the flamethrower used for the effect did not operate as intended. The ignition of the flamethrower on the animatronic seemed to occur rather late. I suspect that this delay allowed fuel and fumes to build up inside the animatronic, allowing a rogue spark to start the fire. This is speculative, but could shed some light on what actually happened. I am thankful that no cast members were harmed, and that the damage to the property was mitigated. If anyone who works at the park is reading this, perhaps it could be a good place to look in the investigation.
I used to work on gas-powered appliances. Usually, there is an ignitor that gets hot, and only once the ignitor reaches igniting temperature is the gas valve allowed to open. And there's Usually a flame sensor to keep the valve open and the fire fed. If the valve shuts off, the process repeats, but I think Disney uses Isopar heads instead. I'm not familiar with that setup.
I'm guessing the fire didn't activate when the lighter fluid was shot out like it was supposed to. That mist that came out of the dragon's mouth was probably a flammable liquid, it might've caught fire while it was in the dragon's mouth
Other angles show fuel leaking from the mouth before it catches fire, so that apparently is why it went up so quickly. It was covered with fuel. Glad nobody was hurt.
Thank you for getting a video for us even though the cast members were yelling at you. I don't think I would have been brave enough to stand there with them telling me to go.
Unfortunately, with pyrotechnics that shoot from the mouth, whether it's fire or the sparks/fireworks that go off...all it takes is one misfire for it to all go wrong. With the advancements Disney has made in image mapping effects, they could easily make it look like she's being electrocuted without using pyrotechnics (the new Indiana Jones effects on Mara) ...it's a very expensive and emotional loss. Glad everyone is safe.
Finally someone smart enough to show the footage before the fire so I could see what happen. I know what caused it now. You can see fluid (possible hydraulic fluid or butane) pouring out of the mouth of the dragon before the fire starts. The fluid is very flammable. The pyro sets the flammable fluid on fire inside of the mouth first and it spreads upwards to the top of the head. All the flames you see dripping down is fluid on fire. I'm wonder why they did not have a sensor to shut down the show if the fluid pressure was dropping. With that size of a leak, the pressure had to be dropping big time so how come there was not a E shut off for the flammable fluid? If there would of been then only the head would of got toasted.
Napalm... easy to start... hard to put out. Disney got VERY, VERY lucky that the actor playing Mickey wasn't torched by this accident. Shows what years of planning and safety run throughs can do. When shit goes down, all the training kicks in.
12:32 ok water works! That’s awesome, I hope that puts the fire out sense no one recorded the fire going out except the picture of it I was from Vailskibum
2:56 The man on the island walking towards the fire at this point needs a Darwin award. Luck was in his favor and was the only thing that saved him from it. Especially at 3:00 when the fuel line burned out and released his fire shot. Funny, crowd 3:32 "Are you doing fireworks later?" Dragon not enough for him.
When Micky attacks the dragon, there are fireworks on the side that go off near the jaws of the mouth. I think that's what caught fire on the remaining fluid in there and set it aflame.
I’m sorry Thad to witness this, but thank you for posting it. As always, we can count on you to provide the latest and even not-so-greatest Disney news.
What I could see from the video the fuel did not initially fully ignite so it just doused itself in fuel wich is probably why it went up in blaze so fast plus the leak from the mouth wich you can see leaking all over its platform the final nail in murphy’s blazing coffin the quick bit of pyro from the death sequence priming to go off
Disneys mistake not having water cannons located in the water pre-pointed at this spot. Could have put it out. What’s Anaheim FD supposed to do? No way to get over there except by those rafts… They could easily do it with the existing piping used for the water effect such as the one at 1:10
Knowing Disney it’ll take a year before they replace the dragon. If they even decide to replace it at all. The show I can see coming back in a month or two. Glad everyone is safe. Curious to see footage during the day to see the aftermath
I heard an ugly rumour that this spring the return has an alternate dragon, no fire, an ABYSMAL fight sequence and even the music might get changed! This fan anger potential disaster could be worse than that fire incident a year ago!

This would’ve been great content for Disney+ also, Disney Vacation Club members could opt to come to this performance with marshmallows and a stick. It was Mickey’s idea (and dream).
Disney’s maintenance is a complete disaster lately. I went last month and all the rides kept breaking down repeatedly. Now their maintenance is so bad that their animatronics are apparently blowing up in flames.
This is definitely a maintenance issue.. Something feels off. After months and years if burns last night? Hopefully we find out more soon.
It's going to get much worse. Disney has recently begun slashing 7000 jobs, likely including maintenance and other non-essential workers. It's only a matter of time until a tragedy happens.
Mickey: "This is MY dream!" Mickey, you got some twisted dreams there, pal....
These past few years have been hard for him
Ron's just lucky mickey went after the dragon instead of him
1) Someone standing by manual emergency shutoff for the main gas line to island???
2) Pre positioned people and boats or other to apply fire suppression in 10s of seconds???
3) In-line valves that shut off automatically when "open pipe" is sensed???
4) Prearranged corridors that open up walking areas for emergency evac???
Good video. Very sad situation. Glad no one was hurt. My husband and I were there when it caught fire but we were on the train in new Orleans square and saw the initial flaming fuel falling down on the belly of the dragon and knew it wasn't normal. By the time the train reached the rivers of America side we could see the smoke billowing over the trees and when we got to tomorrowland we tried to run across the park to take a look but by then they were not allowing anyone in there. Pretty crazy. RIP Maleficent April 22nd 2023.
i was in shock :(
You have to admit. Disney does not screw around when it comes to guest safety. Kudos for them evacuating visitors in a heartbeat.
they dont want to get sued of course.
Damn Mickey, didn't have to go THAT hard
deeply saddened to see what happened last night via social media of what occurred to Murphy the dragon at the Fantasmic show 😭😭😭😭😭 hopefully she can return to the show soon and whatever mishaps happened they can address what went wrong but now it’s painstakingly sad that this occurred here in california and if you remember what happened in Festival of Fantasy at WDW parade just like in Festival of Fantasy parade she returned in high spirits breathing fire 🔥 so hopefully she’ll return to Fantasmic as well as she is well beloved by many Disney fans 🙏🙏🙏🙏 thank you for the 😢 footage TPD
Of course she can I believe they made a backup
This is my favorite thing at Disneyland. It’s so insane. I’m glad no one was hurt. It is definitely a trip all the people there will not forget ❤
This looks like a testament to budget cutbacks in maintenance. First the break room catches fire, now Murphy. Pretty soon someone is going to get hurt.
I appreciate you capturing this everyone needed to be better about listening to the cast members.
When Mickey tried to defeat the dragon, he pretty much took it to the next level.
But seriously, hope a replacement comes in as soon as possible.
Great job documenting the most calm, collective and informative video of this incident! You kept the camera still. You really captured history with grace but also respectfully. Great job!
thank you even though i wasn't supposed to do that i really wanted to see if the dragon could be saved :( but sadly it wasnt i ended up crying on the live stream i was doing at that time
Mickey really took control of his dream and destroyed that dragon! 😂
All the cast members waving people out with their backs turned to the fire…
“Move along, nothing to see here, move along”
And I’m pretty sure everyone was probably thinking in response, “Surely you can’t be serious.” 😂😂
Yeah definitely caused resistance in the gas line for the flamethrower
That just shows they have to stick classic things instead of technology
Other angles show fuel leaking from the mouth before it catches fire, so that apparently is why it went up so quickly. It was covered with fuel. Glad nobody was hurt.
Thank you for getting a video for us even though the cast members were yelling at you. I don't think I would have been brave enough to stand there with them telling me to go.
The blonde one that said "we walk away from fire, not towards it" had me rolling. 🤣
'Everyone keep moving' or just be the silly person standing and filming stopping people from evacuating. That makes sense!
It’s symbolic of what Disney executives are doing with the company.
YOU WIN 🏆...👍
Or have done to already. Close to the point of no return.
I would say it’s a sign of what is to come. 😏
@@oldfashionedstitches2378 Yep
Cringe yo.
Chapeck & Iger "Profits are down, let's cut the maintenance budget"
Ah, yes…the two infamous stooges who invented Virtual Queues, making prices go high on everything, both dumber than a bag of rocks.
The guy with the fire extinguisher,,, -"nope this ain't going to do nothin'."
Napalm... easy to start... hard to put out. Disney got VERY, VERY lucky that the actor playing Mickey wasn't torched by this accident. Shows what years of planning and safety run throughs can do. When shit goes down, all the training kicks in.
That fact that she COMPETLY BURNED proves Diz cheaped out and did not give her flame retardant materials. MKs Malifecnts float only burned in her head
Mickey took his job a bit too seriously
12:32 ok water works! That’s awesome, I hope that puts the fire out sense no one recorded the fire going out except the picture of it I was from Vailskibum
2:56 The man on the island walking towards the fire at this point needs a Darwin award. Luck was in his favor and was the only thing that saved him from it. Especially at 3:00 when the fuel line burned out and released his fire shot. Funny, crowd
3:32 "Are you doing fireworks later?" Dragon not enough for him.
I rewatched from another view point, the guy trying to fight the dragon is not as close as it seems. But still deserves the award LOL
I just heard a great big “Nope!” in my head as he turned around
Thank you for sharing that you did an absolutely fantastic job filming. I'm glad nobody was hurt
That jazz music in the background makes it even more surreal. It looks like a cross-burning almost.
Perfect analogy to the current state of Disney. Even the happy music in the background while being ushered away from the flames.
When Micky attacks the dragon, there are fireworks on the side that go off near the jaws of the mouth. I think that's what caught fire on the remaining fluid in there and set it aflame.
Whoever is saying “throw the fire! Throw the fire!” That was a jinx bro. LOL
I’m sorry Thad to witness this, but thank you for posting it. As always, we can count on you to provide the latest and even not-so-greatest Disney news.
Oh my god! That’s insane! Thank god everyone was okay! The dragon must’ve been too close to something that made it get caught on fire.
Another angle shows fuel leaking from the mouth, so it looks like a fuel leak was to blame.
@@Sueb18631 Oh my god! Well it’s getting investigated. We’ll just have to wait for the report.
@@Sueb18631 Yeah you can see it dripping before it catches
What I could see from the video the fuel did not initially fully ignite so it just doused itself in fuel wich is probably why it went up in blaze so fast plus the leak from the mouth wich you can see leaking all over its platform the final nail in murphy’s blazing coffin the quick bit of pyro from the death sequence priming to go off
@@jdwilliams8864 It looked like it was near a tree with lights and it might’ve swayed into it while I guess it was leaking. Who knows.
The dragon: Goes up in flames and the show stops
The rest of the park: *New Orleans music plays*
My takeaway from this is Mickey has powers beyond our comprehension
Mickey used 1% of his real power.
Disneys mistake not having water cannons located in the water pre-pointed at this spot. Could have put it out. What’s Anaheim FD supposed to do? No way to get over there except by those rafts…
They could easily do it with the existing piping used for the water effect such as the one at 1:10
That is crazy! Glad to hear no one got hurt from that.
True that
Knowing Disney it’ll take a year before they replace the dragon. If they even decide to replace it at all. The show I can see coming back in a month or two. Glad everyone is safe. Curious to see footage during the day to see the aftermath
Mickey: "This is MY dream!"
*slays dragon for real*
MICKEY YOU KILLED HER!!!
Mickey used Fire Blast it's Super Effective.
That would have been awesome to see in person. Mickey was like holy sh*t! 😂
As awful as it is though I did chuckle when Mickey looked up 😅
Bring out the marshmellows Mickey!......Screw that, I'm bringing hot dogs....get over here Pluto!
I heard an ugly rumour that this spring the return has an alternate dragon, no fire, an ABYSMAL fight sequence and even the music might get changed! This fan anger potential disaster could be worse than that fire incident a year ago!
This has to be one of the safest fires to happen, since there’s literally a giant river separating guest
Mickey: "this is MY dream"
Proceeds to burn dragon alive in its own fire.
I hope DeSantis is taking notes.
The only thing ron de meatball knows is how deep can I dig this hole.
Bro imagine being so upset about Disney ☠️
Say…about those “inspections” coming up…
Sort of disconcerting that the fire department still isn’t there after 15 minutes. Luckily it wasn’t in an area with park visitors
Mickey must have got a critical hit on her
It was super effective.
You can tell from the very beginning that something was malfunctioning when the dragon breathed pure fuel and no fire.
"It all started with a mouse!" 🔥🤣🌺🌸
Lol, Mickey does a double take. Like what, my magic worked?! 🤣
You were relentless in getting that footage bro. 👍🏻 Thanks!!!
Now imagine Mickey would’ve taken out the key blade this time , now that would been perfect
Mickey finally slayed the dragon. Good for him.
Even Mickey was like "wtf"
Devastated. You can see when Mickey Mouse realizes Murphy is on fire 😔 Thankfully no CMs were injured
Must be so infuriating for the CM trying to do their job and keep people safe when people seemingly refuse to move and continue to record.
They aren’t “cast members,” FFS. They’re employees. 🤦
kinda ironic that the fire started spreading right as maleficent's death scene was starting to play, with maleficent and the other villains screaming.
Wow… this looks like something straight out of Kingdom Keepers. Haven’t read the full series, but this heavily reminds me of when it was mentioned in the first book that Mickey was caught on fire by the dragon in this show… never actually happened, but it still reminds me.
The folks who grabbed their phones instead of leaving unreal
Yeah, hearing the guy shouting it was going viral. Sad
0:17 that did not age well
Reminds me of the other dragon fire during festival of fantasy parade
exactly came straight into mind
It always happens with Maleficent Dragons. Whenever they breathe fire, they get engulfed. Oh well, I'm sure they'll get it right soon or later....
Mickey had some bad intentions in his dream 😂
That Happened 5 Years Ago In WDW At a Festival Of Fantasy Parade.
