      @@carlosrivera4660 could not have said it better. I love your fig garden as well always love watching you go around and show your figs for the year. Very inspiring!!! Watching you has gotten me into figs. I’m starting off with five trees and will go from there.

    Interesting approach with the gravel mulch. Seems to be working well!

      It helps to hold in some heat; also very tidy and neat way to display the trees. In the winter I can park my car over there as well. On hottest days the reflected and absorbed heat is quite amazing from the gravel.....Regards

    Wow, great-looking fig trees. What a great guy and host Thomas is. Does he mulch his trees with gravel (or some kind of inorganic material)? Thanks

      He adds clay pebbles to his potting mix !

      Hey Jim....I don't really mulch the top of the potted fig tree in a container; but I certainly could and that would help with holding in some moisture. Some people use wood chips. You might see some gravel or the clay pebbles at the top of my trees. In Spring the squirrels are forever digging into the containers; look for acorns etc. I might throw a few handfuls of gravel - just because they don't seem to like to dig thru the gravel.....Regards..

    What type of soil do you use to pot your fig trees?

    • @tomtynan8130
      @tomtynan8130 3 месяца назад

      Soil mixes are always discussed and debated; I personally like a mix that has more in-organic material than most growers. By in-organic I mean; pumice; perlite or Hydroton grow pebbles. I prefer a fast draining mix. Others prefer a mix that holds more water; damper. It can depend on your location; site specific issues, etc. The organic material varies; but mostly "coco coir" which will hold some water. I like to experiment and change it up also. There are ho hard rules; find something that works for you in your area; give it a try....Regards

    Do you guys grow figs just to your growing zone or do you step out alittle? You all have such amazing varieties. I’m in zone 6b NJ but see some good figs that say zone 7 but not sure if I should grow them.

      Look...I grow whatever variety I am interested in trying; do I always get them to ripen ? No - I don't - the varieties that ripen "late" are the most difficult.....I am right on border of Zone 7A/7B...Regards
