  • In this video, we'll unbox a new UNI-T (Uni-trend) UTG2025A Function/Arbitrary Waveform Generator bit.ly/UNISigGen , promptly break it, then fix it again. This unit was provided to me by the manufacturer for review and demo. Although the website offers a downloadable manual, we'll barely reference it, and instead we'll just bumble our way through. This model appears to be a nice budget alternative to other waveform generators from companies such as RIGOL and Tektronix.
    FEATURES:
    UTG2025A has 25MHz maximum output rate, 125 MS/s sampling rate, and 14-bit vertical resolution. It has equivalent dual channel independent output, modulation, sweep frequency, Burst, and other complex waveform generation functions.
    1. 1μHz full-band resolution
    2. 5MHz~30MHz pulse waveform, adjustable rise/fall time
    3. 14-bit/16-bit vertical resolution
    4. Two equivalent-performance channels
    5. Max arbitrary waveform length of 8k/16M points; 48/161
    6. non-volatile waveforms storage

    In case you haven't figured it out - when you were tweaking the upper limit, you set it to 0 for a moment. That changed the output level to a really low level. Your output was set to 3mv instead of 100mv. If you'd gone back and looked at the sine wave parameters side by side with the channel 2 parameters, you probably would have seen it.

  • @petaks01
    @petaks01 4 года назад +10

    Simple issue, the amp limit you set changed the amplitude to match your 0V limit, after you returned you had 3mV output on upper and 2mV on lower since you messed with the offset earlier.

    You would have been proud of me today Brad, I was looking at used electronics and out came the trusty screwdriver and I disassembled an amp in the middle of a busy isle, turns out it wasn't old, tube driven or working but I did come home with a copy of The Beatles White album complete with real 70's hippy stains on the sleeve for just a few dollars. By messing with the settings you changed the square wave to have a low level of 1mV and a high level of 3mV. And a signal with just 2mV of amplitude is just really quiet.

    It is so funny watching you play with that generator. As you run through stuff I take for granted it is obvious that it does far more than you will ever need. It does look like a great bit of kit in general though. What is its highest frequency that one runs up to? You touched on sweep but it is great to show the response in an amp in your case. Shove it on sweep on the input, put an oscilloscope on the output and you will see how well the amp responds to bass or treble. Great video anyway Brad!

      @goodun2974 4 года назад +1

      Dead Koby, I give you a 100 thumbs up for that comment. I'll take vintage test equipment any day. At the stereo repair shop I work for, every piece of test equipment on my bench Is around 30 to 35 years old, except for a Rigol digital oscillo scope, which I don't really like, but when I added other equipment to the bench I needed a very small two channel scope that would fit in a very small area. (Though we have a Textronix scope on a rolling cart that I can bring over to the bench if I need a proper analog scope with high resolution). The heart of my test bench is a Nakamichi T-100 audio analyzer and tone generator which, in conjunction with a patch panel and switchable dummy loads, can test power output, distortion and frequency response, voltage gain, , extraneous noise and intermittent operation, and so on. Every now and then I have to clean the switches on it, but otherwise ir has been pretty much trouble free, knock on wood! Someday I know I will have to recap it; not looking forward to that, and recalibrating it would be a nightmare.....

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 4 года назад

      @Paul J Pachasa JR , no it's somewhat more modern, a tektronix model 2235. The older scopes are so common, and cheap at hamfests, and repairing and calibrating them is so daunting, that they often sell for 20 bucks to guys who cannibalize them for parts and tubes.

  • @ETILHK54
    @ETILHK54 4 года назад +1

    This is cool. What are your thoughts on using this vs. an app on your phone or whatever software? Basically software vs. hardware for this type of thing. And do you have a similar video on oscilloscope? I'm asking because i might need something like this at some point, and thinking if it is worth it vs. conventional software, since this stuff is quite expensive.
    Thanks.

    • @stephenhookings1985
      @stephenhookings1985 4 года назад +1

      Probably depends on the accuracy you want and frequency response. For audio the sound card solutions are quite good. You can program square waves out of an Arduino with reasonable accuracy. I guess this is used to load an amp with a known signal to look for distortion etc. If you were doing professional repairs I figure you need a calibrated source. If you are hobby then hacked solutions work well a lot of the time.

      I made a video about an editor i wrote for Akai Miniak and I show usage of a software scope (including links) ruclips.net/video/IXIfTyuafro/видео.html
      Around 4:44 I start using the scope showing it in time and frequency domain. Watching this back i can see the software scope was quite slow. Modern PCs might be a lot quicker. But it is usable. I got a real 20MHz scope later and much faster monitoring etc. These modern digital scopes are cool for around £200. There again I would probably rather put that money towards and instrument and cheap out on sound card scope - your milage may vary.

      Any thoughts on Siglent vs Rigol?
      I have a Rigol dsa815tg Spectrum Analyzer w/tracking generator (up to 1.5GHz) and their 1102e scope.
      I have been satisfied with the spectrum analyzer, but haven’t used the scope for much of anything yet.
      I mostly use the spec analyzer for tuning RF duplexers for public safety
      and amateur (“ham”) 2-way radio applications.
      The Rigol 815 cost a fraction of what I paid for my Agilent n9340b unit.
      (handheld spectrum analyzer with pre-amp and tracking generator options / 3GHz)
      The Rigol was $1950 with TG option when I purchased it and is currently under $1500.
      The Agilent was slightly over $9800 and is now discontinued, but probably still available on eBay or other sources.
      Though the Agilent is much better designed & constructed and more precise, the Rigol display is significantly better.
      Unless I am doing work in the field, I generally pick the Rigol to use just for the larger and brighter screen.
      I have the horrible habit of buying test gear on Amazon. I always seem to get fooled by the photos that make
      everything seem nicer and larger than the CHINESIUM crap I get when I open the box. I bought a Kooler tron
      signal generator (small & portable silver metallic chassis unit) for around $140 but it turned out to be a p.o.s,
      I kept it because I (as always LOL) missed the return cut-off date. So, I went back and bought the “bench top”
      Kooler tron model. Absolute crap. It weighed all of 5oz and was constructed of flimsy yellowing plastic.
      I don’t know what, if anything, I really need a function generator for. I have a ton of more specialized RF
      / 2-way radio servicing gear already. Everything from paging tone generators
      (QC1 and QuickCall2 / POCSAG / DTMF / 5-tone / etc...) and RF frequency signal generators, etc.
      But... it’s definitely something I should have on the bench as I get more into the electronics part
      of the field and with the whole permanent PlanDemic lockdown situation, I suddenly have much more free time
      / “learning time” on my hands. 😷🦠😳
      AND... To the guitar video channel owner =Thanks for the video !

    Ooh, one more thing (as Columbo says) a word from the wise, use a 1:1 audio transformer between the unit and the equipment you are testing in the unit doesn't have one built in. It will remove the risk of blowing it up if you're stabbing around injecting signals in a crusty old amp.

    At 21:30 you turned the upper voltage to 0. Not sure if the lower voltage mirrored so that you say output 0v. I gotta believe that is very quiet. After that when you were looking at the frequency it looks to be 1M kHz. I am pretty sure no one can easily hear 1GHz :-). But since I am viewing via phone maybe I am misreading the display. Plus you can save screenshots of the screen onto flash drives as well. Having a screenshot helps because if something happens you have all the parameters saved on the screen.

      Also pretty nice to capture waveforms from a scope and replay them with the generator.

      Maybe. It's supposed to interface with your computer, and that functionality wasn't working when I tried it. I'm sure if I spent time chasing down drivers and stuff I could eventually get it working, but eh. I don't foresee ever needing to create and use arbitrary waveforms at all. Maybe one day I'll need to skip school like Ferris Bueller, I'll figure it out then. :D

    Interesting piece of gear but typical of modern stuff..sooooo many features that most techs will never use...if you need all that stuff you will probably need a higher quality unit....dunno..at this point in my life I just want to avoid having to Wade through tech manuals learning about all the time saving 'features'...life is too short. However sometimes you must surrender and RTFM. Personaly,for what you do, I would just stick with the simpler tone generator for most stuff..you would just be doing simple signal tracing, Yes? Just a beep you can hear, sine wave you can see on a scope,if you use one, that's all you need for most troubleshooting amps. Thanks for another interesting vid, Cheers!

    I have a cheap one just to break in new speakers. You can set it really slow, like 1 pulse per second, then increase it up. I will break in a new speaker starting a 40 Hz then increasing up through the guitars range. I built an isobox to place the speaker into so it doesn't cause a divorce. lol hearing a monotone pulse for 12 hours is a dangerous wife irritant.
