I just graduated from UMD this spring and I can relate to the cons you mentioned, especially the vibe that even though its a big school you still kind feel alone, and everyone is doing their own thing. I wish that I was more involved with the black community there. My biggest advice to anyone going to UMD is to take advantage of all the resources and activities as much as you can. At UMD you have to make the effort to meet people, they likely will not come to you -- overall UMD is a good school. Also, I really like your channel and I wish you the best at UMD!
Congrats on graduating!! Thank you for sharing your experience and for your advice. I'll definitely take advantage of what UMD has to offer my next 3 years. Thank you ❤️
I'm an alumni and i'm glad you have gained all this awareness so early in your college experience, so you can spend time making the rest of it the best. Black UMD is a relief. Code switching is exhausting even if it is useful skill to gain.
ill be an incoming freshman this year & as a poc I'm kinda nervous on finding other latinx students but thank u for ur honesty i hope we're on campus in the fall bc i feel like if we arent it'll be even harder to make the transition
Don't be nervous. Despite what I said, college is all about what YOU make it. You'll find other students like you. You just have to be willing to go to events and talk to people. I hope we're on campus in the fall too. I can't do online school for another semester lol
@@ArionAaliyah right! finishing hs online was cool esp since i didn't like hs but i was really looking forward to being on campus its like what drove me for the past four years lol. but thank u for ur advice! also did u go to chs?
Recent grad of UMD here!! Here to say, I FEEL THE COMPETITION PART it was actually ridiculous. I don't think I remember a day where someone was talking about grades until I left a toxic "friend" environment >.> (these are also people who believe in reverse racism and have internalized sexism/misogyny, they were truly gross, but that's besides the point). It was always GPAs and/or resenting others for doing well unless they were in your inner circle, so I actively avoided people who were like that Also how they handle issues -- they don't. They're not even really handling issues right now. Their methods are literally proper PR, and proper PR takes to damage control instead of transparency. At the very least, they could have provided a proper memorial for Lt Collins III, and idek if they did that. The Loh administration/USM is essentially responsible for multiple negative incidents at UMD, and I'd venture to say that because most of the staff isn't changing that it won't get any better In you case, I wish you luck and you have my support for the next few years!! I see that the Pines administration is making some efforts, so hopefully they get better
This gave me insights. I'm attending UMD for Masters this Fall (only if the colleges are in person and I manage to get visa on time) UMD has a great campus and there's a lot going on all the time..You should definitely try to get more involved rest of your college years. Hope to bump onto you sometime this year...Love your vlogs btw❤️❤️
i honestly could relate to being the only black person in the class. i was the only black girl in my ap psychology class this past school year, and i sorta felt like i didn’t belong and i felt that i couldn’t relate to anyone else; and i felt i couldn’t be my 100% self
Yeah, I feel you 100%. I'm honestly still working on feeling completely comfortable with people who aren't like me. It sounds weird, but I try to develop an "I don't care" mindset. It may feel awkward in class sometimes, but the more comfortable you learn to be with yourself, the more it won't bother you.
I have 6 years till I go to college and I’m looking rn and I have some questions 1. Do your get free time 2. How much are the dorms 3. Is it hard to get into the school 4. Do you get roommates 5: Do they have a gym or pool 6: Do they have football games/basketball games and stuff to watch on your free time 7. Do they have parties? Ik I’m young but I really wanna insurer my future
I know I’m not the you tuber but I do go to UMD so I can answer some of your questions! You do get free time especially if you finish your classes earlier. Dorms are about 4K a semester and you usually do get roommates. I heard that UMD is generally harder to get into if you’re from out of state but as long as you’re really active In extracurriculars and have a good essay you should be fine. We have both a gym & an indoor pool (eppley building) as well as free tickets for students to sports games. UMD does have a lot of parties, frat parties as well as parties held by independent party promoters. hope I helped!
Too cute! Speaking as s person who has grown up and currently drives through the campus daily in route to my office I would like to say, UMD isn't like other colleges as it is smack dab in the middle of an already prosperous city. This makes getting a job easy, finding entertainment easy, catching the bus or train easy, finding food easy....an getting distracted easy... Other colleges are in the middle of nowhere which make staying focused easy but everything else difficult. If you are driving by the time you are a senior and you want to bring your car with you to school, that will help lessen your choices.
I go to UMD. I'm currently a freshman. Yes, I'm African American. I absolutely love this school and have had an amazing freshman year so far. If you have any questions, lmk
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on umd. I am an African student thats supposed to be attending there in the fall and i feel as though you have covered factors about the school I didn’t research. I will take into consideration the fact that i will be a minority in a community for the first time in an educational setting and hopefully I can become a stronger student as the years go by.
kvxsten what is your program of study? It really depends. If you’re doing bio I would suggest applying to John Hopkins but it’s really hard to get in. UMD is nice for engineering, computer science, criminal justice, cybersecurity, etc.
InvisibleThought hmm well i want to be an english major because i think i wanna be an english teacher. i heard umd and towson has a good teaching program thingy but umd seems super hard to get in😱
16:19; hold up we can get massages and acupuncture at the health center??? How did I not know this 😂😂😂! EDIT: I'm the co-social media person for the Maryland Latin Dance Club (MLDC) and we host dance classes twice a week (Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 - 10:00 PM) teaching Bachata and Salsa, along with socials twice a semester, we also collaborate often with the Latin dance team Palante, and they compete locally and perform at different events (they just performed at a Washington Wizards game back in February before quarantine fully hit us!) if anyone is looking for a club to check out! Also, I met Julissa Calderon and Gadiel De Orbe back in October along with attending a Josh Peck lecture at two separate events.
I can relate since I’m hispanic and I just started this semester also there and I felt like I would have to be careful with what I say or even when I spoke Spanish they would look at me some sort of way. So it feels like you can’t be your authentic self & I transferred from Pg college so it’s ALOT different.
This is really upsetting to hear, and I feel you 100%. I wish everyone could be their unapologetic self all of the time, but the world we live in makes it very hard. Don’t let anyone stop you from being your authentic self. Ignore the looks! Who cares.
@odalys sorto I just graduated from Pg college, I plan on transferring to UMD in the fall! I’m sorry to hear that you don’t feel like you can be your authentic self. That’s what I was worried about.
This was such a good video. I relate to so much of what you said. I'm literally in the same boat, going to live in the same dorm as a sophomore. What did you think of the bathrooms, laundry room, and lounges?
Thank you! It’s an old building, so the bathrooms are outdated. The laundry room is decent, and the lounge was the best out of all three. I spent a lot of time in the lounge bc of the AC. You’ll get used to everything though.
I think college is expensive in general lol.. Since I live in MD, the in-state tuition was cheaper than a lot of other schools I got accepted in. Thank you ❤️
For me, joining student orgs like the BSU (Black Student Union), ASA (African Student Assoc) and ESA (Ethiopian Student Assoc) helped with creating the wide network and family atmosphere that you are talking about. You still did feel alone sometimes, but that got better, the more involved you get. But I am also an old head, graduates in 2003.
Arion Aaliyah Nyumburu/Stamp Area -1 The gym -2 Tydings -3. A few more spots but the most concentrated spots are these from 9-5ish. I don’t live on campus so I don’t know the after hours spots besides the dorms in the back by the golf course.
me watching videos about schools I’m applying to and everyone saying the vibe is off in each school 👁💧👄💧👁
Me tooo
Same, luckily my high school seems to match this “oof” vibe so hopefully won’t be to jarring if I get in.
Same here. I feel college is a off vibe because of race or a pretty school tbh.

Hi
Great video! The honesty and openness is highly appreciated!
Thank you! 💕
thank you a lot for this video! as in incoming freshman i appreciate your honest take on the university.
I love your content, you are just so real and raw with everything you say.
I appreciate the insight in this video. UMD is on my list of colleges. Thank you 🔥
I’m glad I could help!

Also what clubs or organizations do you see black students involve themselves with ?
I really appreciate these videos about UMD, Aaliyah, especially as a black man. Hopefully, I’ll be attending spring 2021, if everything goes well!
was it hard to get in?
kvxsten not for me. I’m in the mtap program at my cc. Just have above a 3.0 gpa and you’re set. Are you a senior in hs atm or are you in cc?
InvisibleThought im going to be a junior in hs this year and im trying to decided which md college is best for me

Yes girl lol😂 I still have to try it!
I'm looking to transfer spring 2021, this helped me so much. Thank you!
I’m glad I could help! ❤️

GOOOOOD JOOOOB!!!!!!!!!!!
I went there and I felt the same way on the how the vibe is. I didnt like it either. Everything you said I felt spot on.
I just wanted to be completely honest about how I felt. Hopefully I helped someone and brought awareness to how some Black students feel at UMD.
Thank y so much for this!
Is UMD generally an expensive school? You're so sweet btw💕

Nice video and what GPA and SAT scores did you have when you admitted to UMD?
I did NOT know UMD was a PWI...
There’s two campuses the other one is hbcu
I loved this video 💕 can you do a room tour? ☺️
thanks so much for the vid lol, are freshman required to live on campus for the first year like many other schools, or can they live at home.
You're welcome! Freshman can live at school or at home.
Why didnt you apply to umes? that is and HBCU school
Thank you sm for this video!!
You’re welcome!! 💖
So would you say that you regret going to umd? Do you wish you went to a hbcu instead
I wouldn’t say regret, but I wouldn’t say I haven’t thought about the experience of attending an HBCU.

not trying to negate anything you said
Hey. I am in UMD. Will be happy to know you.
I'll be a freshman at UMD this fal!
Congrats!!💗
was it hard to get in??
UMD is very Caucasian! Unless your in the 3 main black spots it’s lonely.
It definitely can be. What are the 3 main spots?
Arion Aaliyah Nyumburu/Stamp Area -1 The gym -2 Tydings -3. A few more spots but the most concentrated spots are these from 9-5ish. I don’t live on campus so I don’t know the after hours spots besides the dorms in the back by the golf course.
I’m just curious but how many people from your high school did you see there?? Idk if this is a weird question but I was just thinking about it lol.😆
Um I seen a few people from my high school there lol.. You definitely won't see people everyday unless you have a class with them or you plan it.
🔥🔥🔥
Subscribed to you girl. Pg county is really nice. Cp is beautiful.
Thank you girl!!❤️
I live in MD let’s collab
Hello Arion, Can i please reach out to you on this platform or tik tok. I will need som information. Thank you
