When Heidi sings "Envy is the only thing it could be", at 2:16, my whole body was covered in chills. This song will soon turn 10 years old, but the meaning is still highly relevant.
@@Jongen. You misunderstand the message of this song and this comment. Basically, it means that, if someone things you are not attractive, or wants to bring down your confidence, and they have the mind and desire to want to outwardly call you ugly to your face, then they, in turn, have an ugly mindset for wanting to be mean toward you in the first place. They may call you ugly physically, but regardless if that's true or not, THEY are ugly on the inside.
I used to love this song when I was 7 because it said "When I was 7" in it so I felt a connection to it. At such a young age it made me feel better when I was sad about anything. I'm now 19 and still searched this song up. I'll always cherish it and its important message.
Such a beautiful song. Unfortunately it's human nature for people to be hateful but I hope that one day people can look past their hate and jealousy and embrace themselves and be able to love others!
I read that wrong lol. I thought it said one of the group members were a sister of someone from TLC. But I totally agree with what you said! This does follow Unpretty ❤
Luiza Ma ok but she was only making remarks about Mutya's beauty because she usually looks funky from the other two, and in this video she looks amazing. We get it, Heidi is blonde and alright looking(in my opinion). Just annoyed how the blondes constantly attract most of the attention. Keisha in my opinion is the prettiest. But I will actually acknowledge the commenter and agree that Mutya looks amazing. Smh
Automic Bunny no Keisha is the black girl Mutya is the Hispanic looking one. She's pretty, she's just always had weird looks, too many piercings and her eyebrows are very botched.
@@HazardTJ3737 I think a lot of people would be healthier, happier and respectful if treated with respect. Maybe if society didn't tell them to repress themselves, their souls wouldn't be broken and didn't need "redirecting". No one is born hateful.
This is a song I want to dedicate to my manager, who made me feel dumb and useless inside after the first yearly review. I'm not vicious or angry, but want to remind them that their words are also a reflection of how they feel about themselves inside, too. I'm leaving the job and trust the wounds will heal and make me stronger. Thank you, Sugababes, for performing such a relatable song.
I want to go back to this time, singing this at the top of my lungs in my room unaware of the abysmal mess my life would become and the people dear to me that would pass😔
remember, only the most beautiful people (inside and out) get bullied, if that profile picture is you.. it just shows im right with my statement :D hehe
This is a timeless track, great chord progressions, lifts, reliefs and absolutely beautiful vocals throughout. And. I love my playing bass to this. Great vibe....plus all the boys n girls in the video really make it ... 💜💜💜
I love this song it literally represented my whole primary school experience. Songs like this will forever be representing the hardship for so many youngsters out there. There’s a pure message that we should all remember whether young or old we should love and respect one another regardless of looks or race ❤️
When I feel sad or people make me feel ugly, I always come here listen this beautiful song with a big lyrics meaning. Whatever the place, in the car or in home. It makes me feel much better, and makes me smile!❤️ This song help me so much!💖 Thank You Sugababes!❤️🙏🏽

"I asked my parents if I was okay" sounds the most reasonable, but I can swear she sings something like "I asked my parents see if I was okay", maybe it's "to see if I was okay" or something or she just says "parents" weird.
some music nowaday's you just hear thin people shaming bigger people, bigger people shaming thin people, people shaming people all together. this song is good for the ears and the heart.
Sugababes' music was way ahead of their time. Taller in more ways was their best work, before all the personnel changes. Solid singles from this album, all of which should have gone number one. Shame that management destroyed a great group
This song sends a good message to everyone, it is a nice song. No one should bring someone down, just because, they may be hurting or because they want to be unkind.
My mom used to play this all the time when I was a little kid.. I wonder if that's why I don't give a fuck about what people say about me. If it is, THANKS SUGABABES ! (:
You just can't beat a good old fashioned pat on the back song about universal acceptance of how all us humans are just the neatest thing ever. Personally, I sing like a sphincter, and The Sugababes are happy to share that they do too. Bravo!!
It is still better to be yourself and liked by no one than pretending to be someone and like by everyone. Just be who you really are and ignore the people who call you names!
This song inspires me so much. When I feel down because of what people have said I listen to this. It makes me feel like I am good enough and I deserve to feel beautiful. Bitchy girls have a lot to learn from this song!
A great song that has even more relevance now than it did when released to the kids growing up with the pressure and scrutiny that surrounds them these days.
I loved Keisha when she was in the sugababes and I was gutted when she left. To me, she had the best voice, was the most beautiful, had the vocal range and power, was the best member of sugababes, was and still is one of my celebrity crushes.
This tune has some of the best lyrics 😁 because it's okay to be you and not what "society" dictates you should be. 🙄 As long as you are not hurting anybody else then you will always be beautiful 😁 real beauty is far beyond skin deep remember that 😁
The incredible Mutya!❤ its interesting to see Mutya taking the lead in so many of the songs where it's her vocals which provide the introduction to so many of the songs which presumably must have been part of the production formula adopted by the band with emphasis on the contrast between the incredible voices of both Mutya and Keisha.

the contouring is too heavily contrasted. It almost looks like Mutya altered her chickbones already.

"Ugly"
When I was 7
They said I was strange
I noticed that my eyes and hair weren't the same
I asked my parents if I was OK
They said you're more beautiful
And that's the way they show that they wish
That they had your smile
So my confidence was up for a while
I got real comfortable with my own style
I knew that they were only jealous cos
People are all the same
And we only get judged by what we do
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then
So are you
So are you
There was a time when I felt like I cared
That I was shorter than everyone there
People made me feel like life was unfair
And I did things that made me ashamed
Cos I didn't know my body would change
I grew taller than them in more ways
But there will always be the one who will say
Something bad to make them feel great
People are all the same
And we only get judged by what we do
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then
So are you
So are you
People are all the same
And we only get judged by what we do
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then
So are you
So are you
Everybody talks bad about somebody
And never realises how it affects somebody
And you bet it won't be forgotten
Envy is the only thing it could be
Cos people are all the same
(The same, the same)
And we only get judged by what we do
(What we do, yeah, yeah)
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then
(Yeah, you)
So are you
So are you
People are all the same
(Oh, oh, oh)
And we only get judged by what we do
(What we do, yeah)
Personality reflects name
And if I'm ugly then
(Yeah, so are you)
So are you
So are you

Asd we learn...
"People":
- are all the same
- can make us feel life is unfair
- can make us do things that we should be ashamed of
Wisdom indeed.
Meanwhile, "they":
- are just jealous
Meanwhile "one" (presumably meaning "anybody" potentially)
- will always say something bad to make them feel great - a very strong and perceptive lyric! [Later in the song this attributed to envy]
Meanwhile, "Everybody":
- talks bad about somebody, and never realise how it affects somebody, and you bet it won't be forgotten
The latter form is interesting, being depersonalised, passive voice.
This opens the gate to the possibility that the one who will not forget is not the victim, but God.

Because of our personality, we engage in reflex hate through name-calling, and indeed pigeon-holing in general...
"if I'm ugly then so are you, so are you" (presumably plural "you"?)
The second singer has height issues, which once weighed down heavily on her, but she grew "taller than them in more ways" - a beautiful and deep and divine lyric
The song ends by reminding us again that "we only get judged by what we do"
...whether that is good or bad?
Quite so.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth...
