    VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Why Serbians Love Putin's Russia and What This Means for the Balkans explores the deep-rooted relationship between Serbia and Russia, examining the historical, political, and cultural factors driving Serbia's admiration for Russia. It delves into the contemporary geopolitical consequences, focusing on the impact of this alliance on Serbia's regional standing and the broader Balkans.
Beginning with historical context, the essay highlights shared Slavic heritage and religious ties as foundational elements of the Serbia-Russia connection. It then scrutinizes modern politics, dissecting the strategic reasons behind Serbia's alignment with Russia, from energy partnerships to military cooperation. The role of media and propaganda in shaping public opinion is also explored.
Crucially, the essay assesses the implications for the Balkans. It examines the potential for regional instability stemming from Serbia's Russia ties and evaluates reactions from neighboring nations and global players. The essay concludes by contemplating future scenarios and the alliance's sustainability, offering a nuanced perspective on its impact on regional stability and global politics.

Was recently in Belgrade(10days ago to be exact) they have Russian and Serbian flags on almost every building and street light. Coming from Scotland thats a real big shock but when I was talking to locals in pubs and bars they tell you they don’t support the Russian invasion, more so they see Russia as standing up to what they perceive as a bully in NATO. Serbians feel that NATO and the west wronged with Kosovo and whether us in the west like it or not they have a point to some extent. No country in the modern era has ever had territory forcibly removed, for example when saddam hussein fell in Iraq no country accepted a Kurdistan state even though they had been subject to extreme human rights abuse and thus Serbs see this as extremely hypocritical.

And Croatia see very hypocritical what East (Russia, Turkey) and West make agreement about Treaty of London 1915, Croatia not to be included in Treaty of Berlin 1875 as independent state, Treaty of Rappalo and Rome Serbs signs with Italians in 1920s against Croatian coastline and hinterland, international law, integrity and unity. All this just cook anger, frustration and sadness here until dome Croats didn't "explode". Yes, Serbia treat Croatia as just one another "colonizator", "occupator" did to us. Did you ever heard of "Riječka krpica"?
See Croatian National Revival started in 1830 and Croatia had the oldest bank among all South Slavs, Prva hrvatska štedionica.

@davidmcintyre2260 @bokicak1 I understand what you are saying but you have to also highlight the hypocrisy from the other side. No Serbian or Russian has ever said why doesn't Kaliningrad go back to Germany (Part of Prussia). Russia has no historical links to that land, it has always been a germanic speaking land with ties with rest of Germany or even Polish Lithuanian empire as they also lived there but not the same extent as Prussians. But was never Russian land. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Serbian flag is the same as Russian one but IN REVERSE so that might have confused you. Possibly more confusing is that Serbia has 2 flags, the Peoples flag (no coat of arms) and the National flag (with the coat of arms), as a rule during national holidays, they are displayed either alternating or together. By the date of your post, you were here on the "Day of National unity" and I can guarantee that there were no Russian or any flag other than Serbian Peoples and National ones on the streetlights.
Serbian people love Russians, no question about it. And even though deep down we have sympathy for their side even in this war that vast majority of us wish never happened, official institutions are not that blind to realize that displaying Russian flag wouldn't be geopolitically prudent.

They dont like outsiders telling them what to do. They were the first to break away from ottoman rule. They defied the axis powers and they were no soviet satellite state. Good luck, eu, nato and whomever is stupid enough to want to make serbs kneel.

One word they have been slaves to Germans and they will be inferior race in western eyes and then what's the worst they (Slovenians Croats Muslim Bosnians Albanians) like it. Also they were Nazis one of the worst murderers in human history. That's why west like to use them cos they don't know what freedom is. Maximum achievement of countries like Slovenia Croatia kosovo and Bosnia its their own tournament who will be bigger ass kissing nation that's how they survive as states. Serbs are completely different Serbs likes freedom and never kneels to anyone. That's is why Serbia gets punished all the ti.e trough history by big powers. Serbs are lions. The answer is simple. Russians fought and bled for Serbia on several occasions. And it means a lot. And should mean a lot for a long, long time. The other thing, in my opinion, is that Serbians, being basically distanced from both East and West seem to have a distinct opportunity to have a more objective perspective towards both. Also, there is access to most of world media, not only "western propaganda" or "Putin's propaganda", but also to Indian, Chinese, Arabic and other media, so we can interpolate data to gain fairer view.

There is not much sense in this video...
    1. You tell that Serbian leader was elected - Who was elected on the other side? Not saying Milosevic was any good, but the others had same mindset.
    2. Serbs wanted to make a country where all Serbs would live - In fact Serbs were already living in one country called Yugoslavia.
    3. Tito was a Croat, and Croats were suppresed somehow? Funny since large amount of factories were in Croatia
    4. Serb separatists - So Serbs separated from Yugoslavia although Slovenians separated first, then Croats, and then Bosnians. See anything wrong?
    5. Despite the fact EU is a major financial supporter for Serbia - This is not entirely true. China has come to be greatest investor in recent year or so. From Serbian perspective EU is doing everything they can on taking Kosovo away, Russia and China don't. What's so staggering about the fact that one side is working against interests of Serbia and Serbians don't trust them? Would you trust me if I put my hand in your pocket while I'm giving you some money? You really think amount of money they gave can compensate for land value of entire province? Like WTF?
    6. Reason why so many Russians come to Serbia is that they don't want to be treated bad due to Western propaganda. They want to live decent lifes while this shitty war passes, and Serbian people have no hatred towards Russians. We have experience with Western propaganda so I guess we can see more clearly through it.

Not bad, you forgot to mention that in the bombing the USA used depleted uranium, that is why Serbia and Kosovo ( yes Albanian population especially) have the highest rate of cancer in Europe!
Make a video about that please 🙏

    • @dannyboy-vtc5741
      @dannyboy-vtc5741 Год назад +9

Nope that's not it at all, i mean i know what depleted uranium does to you, as my uncle from croatia went to kosovo to help with demining, and he indeed died from an agressive cancer not long after returning, but he worked with tge stuff directly on a daily basic.
But to have an impact on entire population, yeah had they thrown down ten times more it wouldn't be enough, if you compare what happened in japan for example.
And mind you most of it, at least in urban areas has been disposed of quckly as it's very detectable.
Nope, i'll tell you why they have so much cancer there, i follow their press daily, their economy was and is heavily dependant on mining and heavy industry, their soil is very polluted with heavy metals, mercury but arsenic too, and instead of curbing that down with better regulations they gave their mines to chinese and other foreign investors that are even worse than old communist yugoslavian administrators, and local government isn't any better using dirtiest coal you can find on earth polution wise and standards of environmental protection went down last decade with current government that only targets quick cash.
I've read in their press, within a last year their soil analisys and it's devastating in general, and their waterways too, giving they have mountains of garbage falling from garbage dump into the river and raw sewage flowing into the river in downtown belgrade.
So yes the numbers regarding heavy metals and arsenic and other poisons were bad, but around mines, power plants, and other industrial complexes were like 100 times above allowed, not 50% or 200%, but 10 to 100 times, 1000 to 10 k % - and the same is for kosovo, also heavily mining dependant area, uranium is just a trope and an excuse, few passes with gaiger counter and you scoop it up and dispose of it, but that was anyways miniscule in comparison with decades of heavy polution on an industrial level.

I am sad to say but this video is poorly researched.
A lot of historical points were dropped:
-How Russian Empire supported Serbian uprising, without that support Serbia would not gain it's independence in 1878 but would continue being Ottoman protectorate.
-How Russia entered WW1 solely because of Serbia, when they have the chance to say "no" and avoid needless casualties.
-How during WW2 Soviets assisted in liberating Yugoslavia and actually left the country while Allies bombed Belgrade in 1944 and actually killed more people than Germans did.
-How during the 90's Russia wanted to assist but could not as they had their own problems, but despite that a lot of Russians choose to support Serbia as mercenaries.
-How in 1999 at Pristina airport WW3 almost started when Russian KFOR units almost got fired upon by British KFOR units as they raced to control the airport.
In short: Serbia and it's people like Russia because Serbia as a nation today would not exist without them. And Russians since then always assisted and protected Serbia as much as they can while never asking for anything in return. Western powers on the other hand (Germany, Britain and US) had in one way or another always have hostile stance toward Serbs and actively worked against them.
Giving how things are going now Serbia will never join EU as most of population right now does not support it, same goes for NATO. Most likely outcome that, long after Ukraine War is over, Serbia will be something akin to Switzerland. A neutral century in a middle of Balkan with strong ties to Asia, African and South America which is independent from EU politics.

This is a non-argument mired in pseudohistory and pseudo-geopolitics, I suggest Maria Todorova on the specific matter of the premise of "Balkanism". America was initially in favor of the preservation of Yugoslavia, but after Germany offered unilateral recognition and support to the illegal secession of Yugoslavia, and then spent months lobbying in the EEC and the UN to get others to recognize them, they too revoked their support for the preservation of Yugoslavia and provided this " Western aggression" against Yugoslavia with an additional, USA dimension to it. Germany declaring war on Yugoslavia in all but declaration, and starting the wars in Yugoslavia is an irrefutable historical and geopolitical fact, Karen Talbot, J.D. Heidenheimer, French Foreign minister Dumas, Daniel Vernet, Mitterand, the US State Department (including Warren Cristopher), Joseph Joffe, John Mearsheimer, Lord Carrington, and Cyrus Vance are universally clear on the matter. What needs to be stressed is that Yugoslavia was offered IMMEDIATE* entry to the EEC, all member-states were in favor of it, barring Germany, who then proceeded to unilaterally recognize the illegal secession of Croatia and Slovenia, the rest is history. In both cases of Yugoslavia's destruction, the root of it was the aggression of several great, hostile powers, the only difference being that this time, the aggressors were not entirely the same as those from the 1940s, and Yugoslavia was unfortunately defeated in this "reprisal". Foreign Aggression, not "tribal, ancient Balkan enmities and other neologisms killed this state. Yugoslavia existed for the better part of the 20th century, from the 1910s to the early 1990s in notable stability, barring minor incidents which the West blows vastly out of proportion to substantiate its premise of the abovementioned Balkanization - a neologism (that has fairly little substantiation in history and ethnography) they've invented for the mere purpose of justifying a number of aggressive and detrimental attempts of subverting the resurging Balkanite states of Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria, as a retaliation for the three's role in the defeat of the Ottoman Empire (the West's long-lasting ally), and the liberation of the whole peninsula of the aforementioned's rule. Serbia has especially earned the enmity of the Western powers as a result of her endeavors in WW1 which have shattered the Old World order and initiated a subsequent, yet steep withering of the traditional global, colonial powers of the world, and Yugoslavia has established its foreign policy on emancipating the Third World under its leadership and preventing the Western powers from re-establishing themselves as the governing body of its former colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Near East, thus effectively cutting them off from their vital wells of natural resources, thus relegating the West ever-further to the status of mere vassals of the USA.
These premises about the "weak economy" being the root of Yugoslavia's death are moot as well, in 1991, Yugoslavia was the world's 24th economy with a GDP of 120 billion, and a foreign debt of merely 18 billion - 15% of its GDP, it was a developed, powerful, global exporting economy: Mutual interactions between the two sides intensified in the late 1980s and early 1990s but all progress was cut off as of 25 November 1991 due to the wars in Slovenia and Croatia. Prior to the cut-off, Yugoslavia was the EEC's second largest trade partner in the Mediterranean area, just after Algeria, with 90% of industrial imports from Yugoslavia to the EEC not subject to any duty. Furthermore - in 1991, Yugoslavia had a higher GDP than Austria, South Africa, Indonesia, Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Romania, and Norway. The Serb and Croat states south of the Danube were founded in the early-to-mid 600s, not the 800s, and the reason why Serbs prefer Russians to the West is that, unlike the West, the Russians didn't commit genocide against the Serbs during both World Wars, they didn't destroy Yugoslavia, and they didn't drop depleted uranium on them, and don't seek the annihilation of Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

Modern Russia is defined in large part by Putin, just like how the Soviet Union was following the death of Lenin defined by Stalin. Following a period of turmoil, both men rose to a leading position in Moscow and its empire, before shaping the country around themselves. However where Stalin did this through forced industrialization and the Great Patriotic War, and Putin did this through overseeing a reinvogarated Russian economy and the return of Russia to the world stage, both were equally defined by their construction of a system solely built around them specifically being on top. If you had abruptly removed Stalin form power, or if you were to abruptly remove Putin today, the political structures built around Putin would be thrown into chaos similar to how the Kremlin remained paralyzed for a while following Stalin's death as the leadership fought over who would rule Moscow.
Putin has also built an image for himself that would be impossible to replicate without him specifically.

Croatia during the homeland war 1991-1995 purchased the most of weapons from Boris Yeltsin's Russia and from Ukraina. That's the fact. When Croatian minister of foreign affaires Grlić-Radman was visiting Russia in February 2022, he said that Croatia will be forever grateful to Russia for weapons that was sold to Croatia in time when Croatia need it the most. And one more curiosity: Russian historian and academic Mayorov published in 2000 a book: "Velikaya Horvatiya" (The Great Croatia) that summarized scientific research and the results from the fields of history, archaeology, ethnology, linguistics and anthropology about the early ethnogenesis of Croats in regions of Russia and Ukraina. That book, in which is scientifically presented the presence and the traces of early proto-Croats in wide regions of southern Russia and Ukraine in the time before Rurik's dynasty in Kiev (before the 9th century AD), even has received the award as a significant work from the president Putin. Of course, Serbians when they heard about this, they were very surprised and even angry.

Most Serbs have some sort of sympathy for Russia, not Putin's Russia, but Russia in general - due to the Slavic roots, Orthodox faith, same enemies we've had in history, but also respect for the great Russian culture, literature, museums, icons, ballet, and arts. Russia is such an amazing country with so many cultures and peoples and traditions inside it, and has given so many beautiful contributions to the world in the world of science, space research, arts, ballet, literature, music, the defeat of Nazism in WW 2 at great cost. But, people are so blinded by politics that they only look at Putin's Russia of today. Russia has such great culture and the US is nowhere near.

West is like aaaaa freedom, democracy you can be anything you want, even a cat, but you must be against Ruzzia or whatever. Where is freedom of choosing there? Democracy? West is covertly authoritarian.
On the other side we have authoritarian country Russia, which invaded Ukraine, because since 2014. they were repressing Russians living in Ukraine by forbidding them to use Russian language and also attacking Russian people in Donetsk and Lugansk by Ukraine military. Nevertheless, Russia shouldn't attack Ukraine but they could find other ways of dealing with this problem of Russians living in Ukraine.
The main conclusion is that this is proxy war between NATO and Russia in which the main victims are Ukrainians who are dying every day for an year and half. Also, other parts of world are facing consequences by this ongoing war between West and Russia and I hope they will reach peace which is much needed. A lot of incorrect things are stated in this video, where Serbia is again portrayed as the only culprit of the war, and no one asks how it is possible that Croats and Muslims had the right to their own state, and the Serbs did not have the right to stay in Yugoslavia. No one to mention the murder of over 300 Serbian policemen and civilians in Kosovo before the war in Kosovo, but okay. P.S. The Serbs were the biggest victims during the first and second world wars, thanks to the Serbs today all the states of the former Yugoslavia have their independence. We liberated them during the First World War, not the West, and this is how it was returned to us. LONG LIVE RUSSIA, LONG LIVE SERBIA.

I’m curious as to what Serbian media shows about Putin’s Russia and the war in Ukraine. Of course there is a small minority of people in the West who have access to all the information and still support Russia, but the figures from those polls in Serbia are incredibly high.

There is no doubt that Tito achieved something remarkable, holding the six different republics together for four decades, but he failed utterly to put sensible plans in place to sort out what would come after him. Nationalism was held in check by the fact that anyone who stirred up such sentiment was dealt with harshly, either exiled or given long jail sentences. The only officially acceptable form was Yugoslav nationalism, which staggered on until the economy crashed. Then the demagogues crawled out of the darker corners, ready to blame someone else for the mess the country was in, and it led to war. "Brotherhood and Unity" died in an inferno of violence.

During Yugoslavia's worst year, Yugoslavia was the world's 24th economy with a GDP of 120 billion, and a foreign debt of merely 18 billion - 15% of its GDP, it was a developed, powerful, global exporting economy: Mutual interactions between the two sides intensified in the late 1980s and early 1990s but all progress was cut off as of 25 November 1991 due to the wars in Slovenia and Croatia. Prior to the cut-off, Yugoslavia was the EEC's second largest trade partner in the Mediterranean area, just after Algeria, with 90% of industrial imports from Yugoslavia to the EEC not subject to any duty (not to mention the massive trade with the NAM). Furthermore - in 1991, Yugoslavia had a higher GDP than Austria, South Africa, Indonesia, Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Romania, and Norway.

It's not that remarkable to use foreign connections to finance your funhouse of political terror and repression. Tito's hardly unique in that. But that is not even what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the most laughable misconception westerners have about Yugoslavia and that is that 'Tito kept Yugoslavia together.'
TITO WAS THE ONE BREAKING IT UP!
The 1974 constitution happened on Tito's watch. It contained a ridiculous unworkable system that decentralized the country to the extreme and gave the autonomous provinces in Serbia not only de-facto independence, but control over Serbia as a whole making the rest of Serbia effectively a prisoner of their whim in a more or less a complete reversal over what it means to be 'autonomous'. The entire system was designed to cater to everyone's nationalism except Serbs who were severely fragmented and put in a blatantly disadvantageous position. Tito himself bragged that 'he screwed up the Serbs so bad it will take them 100 years just to get their bearings.' The country was practically designed to break up at the most opportune moment, i.e. when the west won the cold war.

Josip Broz Tito had an idea after the Second World War since he was already considered the leader of all peoples of the SFR Yugoslavia. He wanted to be the leader of the Albanians as well. Therefore, after the Second World War, Serbs, who were the majority settled in Kosovo, were not allowed to return to their homelands by the law he enacted, aiming to settle a significant number of Albanians in (so called )Kosovo. This was his strategy to potentially annex Albania to Yugoslavia in the future.Thats why when you see now demographics you think of (so called Kosovo)you see much higher number of theri population its all done with purpose but its hard to exlain to Westeners .

They like to say that Russia is an orthodox and slavic country, brotherly to ours, but what is Ukraine? Merely the same, and they are attacked and got their territory stolen from them just because they didn’t want to be close to Russia anymore. They also forget that Russia aided Bulgaria against Serbia in 1885. Or that the soviet soldiers raped women in Belgrade in 1945, which left Tito speechless. Well, now they are plundering NIS (oil industry of Serbia) through which they do dirty work, including espionage. We view Milosevic's fate as tragic in the ancient Greek sense. A scapegoat for the Western elites, and through his fate we look our own the same way, Western world punishing us for all the mess they deliberately made.
Milosevic didn't choose "Greater Serbia", he chose to stand up to Western tyranny, to not allow the Serbs in Yugoslavia to relive the fate of the WW2, when Croats and Bosnian Muslims shown us what their rule was like. Same as the Jews wouldn't have allowed something like that to happen to them, no matter who was leading them.
Milosevic didn't organize paramilitaries of Muslims and Croats and made them attack Serbians and their property. Milosevic didn't order Croat leader Tudjman to say out loud how he is glad that his wife is neither Serbian nor Jewish, while standing as the leader of NAZI loving Ustasa as they were returning from exile.

Stambolic helped milosevic before he was unknown by the public, and milosevic had stambolic killed. Milosevic could have stopped supporting the separatist in croatia and bosnia. He chose not to. It could have led to lifting the sanctions and isolation. In the 1990s, serbians needlessly suffered, because milosevic chose to support martic and babic, or karadzic and mladic! He stayed for too long!

On the other hand - this is something that repeats in history of both those nations, so maybe they deserve each other.

Well made but poorly researched video.
The majority of the video doesn't even attempt to answer the question stated in the name.
Russians are not coming to Serbia to avoid sanctions. They come to Serbia to avoid killing their friends and relatives in Ukraine. To avoid participation in an insane war. Same way many Yugoslavians avoided forced mobilisation back in the 90s
I don't know how this simple fact avoided you attention.
