  • Here are more than 20 common and essential phrasal verbs you need to know! Sometimes we can avoid phrasal verbs by using a word that has a similar meaning, but there are some phrasal verbs which are very difficult to avoid. In this video I act out several common phrasal verbs that you need to know if you want to speak English well. These are phrasal verbs for daily use.

      1) The fight lasted in ten minutes.
      2) The fighting lasted in ten minutes.

      They basically mean the same thing :fight is the noun whereas fighting is the action (like the talk and the talking). Remember, do not use the preposition /in/ in both sentences. We say the fight lasted ten minutes. Best.

    Thanks a lot Max. Your teaching style is amazing and I do love it.
    It is obvious that there is a difference between the meaning of phrasal verbs and that of the normal verbs but is there any rule or pattern that might help English learners to make an educated guess of the meaning of phrasal verbs. For instance, the existence of the word "down" in words as in cut down, put down, go down, etc which all imply the meaning of "decrease".

    Hi, Max! How do you do? I think both "wake up" and "get up" are separable phrasal verbs. For example, my mom often wakes me up in the morning. She usually gets me up around five.

      Yes, they can be separable or inseparable. In the examples that I demonstrated they're inseparable. :)

    1:18 wake up : svegliarsi. "Io mi sveglio, tu ti svegli, (egli) lui si sveglia..." "Io di solito mi sveglio alle 8."
    1:34 get up : alzarsi. "Io mi alzo." "Alzati che è tardi. Mi sveglio alle 8 e mi alzo per andare in bagno verso le otto e dieci."
    1:57 turn on : accendere. "Io accendo la luce."
    2:37 turn off : spegnere. "Spegni la luce perchè voglio dormire."
    2:55 put on : indossare, mettersi. "Tu indossi gli orecchini." "Ti metti la giacca?"
    4:02 take off: togliersi, alzarsi in volo. "Mi tolgo la giacca." "L' aereo si alza in volo. L'aereo sta partendo."
    4:21 get on : andiamo d'accordo. "Io e mia madre andiamo d'accordo."
    4:54 pick up : prendere, sollevare. "Prendo il gatto (da terra)"
    5:10 put down : metto giù. "Metto subito giù il gatto perchè mi sta graffiando"
    5:37 look up : guardare in alto.
    6:18 look up : guardare nel dizionario, consultare il dizionario
    6:38 try on : provare. "Provo il maglione. Ho l' impressione che sia largo"
    7:40 put away : mettere via. "Metto via la tazza."
    8:14 sit down : sedersi. "Ora mi siedo"
    8:47 stand up : alzarsi
    8:55 throw out : buttare via. "Vado a BUTTARE VIA l' immondizia."
    9:18 go out : uscire. "Non ne posso più di studiare i phrasal verbs. Adesso esco."
    9:49 grow up : crescere. "Io sono cresciuto in questa casa."
    10:27 sign in : loggarsi. "Adesso mi loggo."
    10:56 sign out : sloggarsi. "Adesso mi sloggo."
    sit down : sedersi, essere seduto. Ora mi siedo. Adesso sono seduto.
    turn on (sexual meaning, said in a very polite way) "Mi accendo di desiderio"

    Oh I still remember being frustrated every time a phrasal verb was the essential part (and it usually is) of a sentence and I needed to guess its meaning... Of course that stil happens today, but I've learned to enjoy the process of learning new ones as often as I can!

      I think that's a good attitude :D. I understand the frustration because there's something similar in German (separable and inseparable verbs). They drove me nuts in the beginning!

    - When using log in (as 2 words), it is being used as a verb showing an action… telling someone to take action…go log in.
    - When using login (as 1 word), it is being used as a noun or adjective indicating a place or destination… go to the login or go to the login page.
    The same thinking applies to log out vs. logout
