6 months later and I’m installing mechanical gauges the legit way. Thank you. This was not gonna go smooth if I hadn’t seen this I very highly appriciate this video!
I followed your steps in this video and was successful in removing my dashboard this weekend. This was extremely helpful. The only thing I'd add (and I could've fast-forwarded through it) is that my 1984 300TD has two screws that needed to be removed behind the wood trim with the switches at the top of the center console. The factory service manual I was using didn't mention those screws either.
With the oil on your hand you may want to check the mechanical oil gauge fitting may be loosening or your vacuum line that goes into the key switch. You may be getting some oil from the check valve on your vacuum pump.
“…and you’re gonna have to disconnect your speaker, and you’re gonna have to remove the gauge cluster, and you’re gonna have to remove the steering wheel, and you’re gonna have to solve world hunger, and you’re gonna have to…”
I have a 1981 Mercedes 240d and it has the center vent lever and there is a screw just to the right and under of the key starting switch. My reason for taking off the dash is the center lever is not attached to the outside vent and even in California it is starting to drop in temperature in the morning to the mid 40's and I need to reattach the lever.

Excellent. I own 5 x W123 and this was very informative on so many levels. Well done

It definitely had a leak under the dash before I owned it, probably a bad oil gauge but no new leaks since I’ve owned it.
