  • The folks at Baker were nice enough to send me a copy of their Illustrated Bible Background Commentary so I wanted to let viewers know what you will find in it and how it compares to the currently-out-of-print Baker Illustrated Study Bible (which is available digitally at: www.amazon.com/CSB-Baker-Illu... ).
The Baker Illustrated Bible Background Commentary is available at: www.amazon.com/Baker-Illustra...
Note, this is NOT the Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary. That is also out of print (though also available digitally at: www.amazon.com/Baker-Illustra... )

I’m surprised they didn’t send you the Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary. It is different than the one you are reviewing here. The notes are almost similar in that one because I used to have the Study Bible but gave it away after comparing the content in both because it was basically the same. The Commentary I am referring to is edited by Gary Burke and Andrew Hill. Published in 2012. But I really enjoy your reviews and I’m going to buy the commentary you referred to earlier. Thanks for what you do here. I’m learning and it’s fun. Blessings to you. Lastly ignore the people that are critical of your action figures. They don’t know who you are helping. It’s people like me who didn’t go to seminary but love to study God’s word. Keep doing what you do.

There's ANOTHER option. Buy a study Bible like the CSB Study Bible, then get the Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook. It is basically the same information as in the Holman Illustrated Bible, just without the Bible text. So, you can follow along with your other Bible and the have this handbook with all the same pictures and articles as the Holman Illustrated Bible. So, much smaller book and only between $20-$30.

New subscriber. I have been looking at videos for Bible study since I want to study more this year. RUclips recommended your review on the Baker Illustrated Study Bible a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been reviewing your videos ever since. Today I received a reasonably priced used leather edition of the NIV Archaeological Study Bible based on your recommendation. I’m glad I found it and it was definitely priced lower than some were asking and in good shape. No success with the Baker Illustrated Study Bible but I will keep looking. Hopefully, it’s reprinted; I would prefer the hard copy rather than an electronic version.

I have the Baker Study Bible, and I agree, it is very good.
I presume it is out of print because it was paired with the 2017 CSB text. Obviously they can't now simply reprint the old versions, but given the amount of interest in their product surely they could relatively easily rework the Study Bible notes to accommodate the 2020 CSB text?
That said, the 2020 CSB revision came out without much publicity, almost as if Holman was trying to get it out "under the radar". Is Holman likely to further revise the 2020 text soon? If so, I could see why Baker might hold off on another "shared" publication and rather focus on a pure commentary over which they have sole control.

I've been lurking a long time. You have a good channel man. I have seen where others apparently get tired of reviewing Bibles and move on to other things; sometimes that does improve the channel, but often it does not. I think it's like any other thing in life. If I came for hotdogs and you start serving pizza......well maybe it's better, but maybe I just want the hotdogs I came for. You do a good job here so I'm jumping on board.
I do imagine it gets frustrating for you as a Weslyan-Arminian having to review all these Reformed-leaning resources, since that's where the vast majority of Biblical resource material comes from (not surprisingly haha).
All joking aside, I recall your review of the Wesley Study Bible and thought it was a good honest review from you, even though it comes out of your tradition. That kind of honesty is a big deal. I own a copy of that study Bible and felt the exact same way you did. It's a disappointing study Bible.
I have located a few resources out there that do a better job representing the Weslyan-Arminian tradition. They just aren't study Bibles. The book "Classical Arminianism" by Forlines is a decent resource. But it is actually quite difficult to find resources that represent Arminianism very well. As a Calvinist, it would benefit me to be aware of more good resources in this vein.
It wouldn't bother me if you had a particular segment of your videos committed to just that issue. You are a fair guy and I really don't think you would be alienating anyone if you made a point of highlighting resources that do a good job representing your tradition. Reformed folks like myself don't mind doing it.
Frankly, after so many decades, I just don't ever run across anything new that challenges my Reformed Baptist position. So I have mostly interacted with Westminster Presbyterianism and the current iteration of theonomic postmillennialism. But all that is on "my" side of the house. I certainly welcome any fresh (or old, but new to me) challenges to my own understanding of scripture.

So it does not surprise me that your recent review got so many views, although remember your inviting caption helped ("How did I miss this?") It really is a fine study Bible, so I don't understand why Baker is not keeping it in print. As you point out, both resources are still available for Kindle. Thinking that I would have been wiser to have gotten a used Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary instead of the new BACKGROUND...but I didn't realize there was basically a companion commentary to the Baker Illustrated Study Bible and that BOTH of them are out of print. Naturally.... The BACKGROUND Commentary is fine, but rather superfluous with the other background commentaries and study Bibles I already have.
Most of the resources I currently have have, while excellent, ended up being rather theologically grouped in not always helpful (for me) perspectives...which led to me (and a zillion others) hunting for the elusive Baker Illustrated Study Bible from your now famous review.
QUESTION: Does, in your opinion, the out of print Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary provide sufficient advantage to warrant purchase (unfair and probably unanswerable question)? I'm willing to sacrifice in other areas for it, as long as it is helpful. Apologies for the question, but I'm hoping my intent comes through, even though I seem unable to articulate as clearly as I wish.

I can't speak to the direct comparisons from the Baker Illustrated Study Bible since I don't own it but I found that the sentences you read from it about Numbers appears verbatim in The Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary edited by Gary M. Burge and Andrew E. Hill. Perhaps that might be worth comparing as well in terms of how significant the overlaps might be?

I love my Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible. I think it's the best bible to recommend atheist readers. I was curious if I should get a Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook, a Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary, or both. Are you familiar with the former?

The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook is, in my opinion, THE best Handbook on the market. I was using a Handbook to teach a class at my church, so I bought a LOT of them and literally created a comparison matrix to see which ones had the best and broadest content (so for example including good articles on Bible study, Hermeneutics, Bibliology, etc etc in addition to the basic book overviews). BIBH is THE BEST ONE, period.
Only problem?? It's out of print too. You can't find this one anymore except used for $50+ and new for much more (so the price stopped me from being able to use it for my class, personally). I really have no idea why they have killed most of this Baker Illustrated series (Handbook, Commentary, Backgrounds Commentary, Study Bible). Seems only the Backgrounds Commentary featured in this video is still in print, which again, seems bizarre and unfortunate to me. Obviously there's demand...

I actually like my older Bible's better than the updated ones. 😊
The paper is a little thicker than the newer ones ,in some of them.
I have several Journaling Bible's, I prefer my old beat-up no room to really write anything in Bible over the new ones .
It has a column refer which I love , it used to have a concordance, Topical and maps. Those fell out years ago !
But I always grab that one, and then out the door, I used to go .
I don't attend organized church anymore
To much political crap in the churches, not to mention that they've accepted a lot of man's laws instead of God's laws, and a majority also chose to agree with the church of Rome. And I want nothing to do with that church at all .
So that makes it difficult to find a church that actually believes what the Bible teaches and the Ten Commandments.
    This what I believe in:
    God the father
    Jesus, the son
    And the Holy Spirit
I believe died on the cross for my sins
Rose from the dead 3 days later walked among man for 40 days more
    And then accended into heaven
I believe all 10 Commandments as written, including the 4th commandment that a majority of Christians refuse to follow because they believe mans law over God's law !
" Remer the Sabbath day and to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work.
But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD, your God . In it you shall do no work : you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant nor your cattle ,nor your stranger thst is within your gates.
For in six days, the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and reasted on the seventh day . Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it ."
The church of Rome also ignores the first 2 Commandments
    No other God before me
And you shouldn't have ANY graven image AND not bow down to one
    They do both .
They've rewritten the 10 Commandments to suit their needs.

I have the Baker Illustrated Bible Background Commentary, and while the physical construction and price are excellent, I was extremely disappointed with the amount of content.
The book has a single-column format, giant margins, pretty large font, and just tons of white space in general. Many of the notes are sparse. My impression is that it actually has less words than the notes in the Cultural Background Study Bible, despite not needing to include the Biblical text!
Clearly there was a high-level editorial decision to make this an introductory source with fairly basic information. I disagree with that decision. Maybe it's just me, but in my mind a one-volume commentary is a step more advanced than a study Bible, and should have more and deeper content than one. Instead it's actually less.
I was particularly disappointed in the length of the essays. Every one wastes an entire half a page just for the essay's title. They are particularly short in the New Testament, where many of the essays are less than 2 pages, despite covering topics on which you could write an entire book. Heck, some of the essays are less than half a page of content (though they still use up 2 full pages, mostly white space).
Worst of all is the essay on the intertestamental period. You would think a background commentary would have a ton of info there, but instead the actually text of that essay is a whopping 3 pages long. In fairness, some of that material is (briefly) covered in the NT essays. But it's still pathetically little, less than is found in the equivalent essay in many study Bibles, even those not focused on cultural background. If I had my way, this essay would be a dense 50-page monograph. I want to know, step by step, how synagogues developed. I want to know everything about the history of the Sanhedrin and what authority it exercised decade by decade. I want to know exactly how the Pharisees and other sects developed after the Maccabean period. I want to know the entire biography of John Hyrcanus, his life and times and successors. I want to know, blow by blow, how Jerusalem fell to Pompey and the aftermath and its influence on Jewish thought. I want to know the history of all the developments of Jewish theology after the time of Nehemiah. Instead, I got 3 pages.
I would only recommend this book to people who want introductory-level content in a separate book in a large font. Otherwise, I'd just get a study Bible with similar content. This book could also be useful for someone who wants to write a lot of their own notes in the margins; there's certainly plenty of space for it.

If people just want the commentary, that's great, but for those of us who prefer the combination, it's not !
It's hard to carry 2 books to a study group !
Oh, in their commentary, they need to stop using shiny paper it's a pain in the backside for studying , it glares and makes it hard to write notes in .
That's any commentary or other reference books printed ☹️
