    Heard Corelli at The Met in AIDA,TOSCA,BOHEME, PAGLIACCI, and CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA. He was the most EXCITING singer I ever saw. You could almost feel the electricity as the lights went up. That is missing now.

    The very first performance of La Forza del Destino I every saw was in January 1965 ...with Corelli and Bastiannini....plus Tucci and Tozzi ... Simply heaven!!!
    Corelli's voice was unparalleled - and literally grabbed you by your being. I saw him in several other operas at the Met - but those years were indeed the golden years.... In one subscription year, I saw Corelli, Bastianini, Sutherland, Nilsson, Gedda, Bergonzi, Tebaldi, Price, Siepi, Bumbry and Ghiaurov .... along with many other great artists.
    There is no such operatic firmament these days....

      I heard the Forza broadcast from that season, and it made me a fan for life. I had liked the voice but didn't particularly care for the singing. But after a summer spent with Lauri-Volpi in 64, he came back for the 64-65 season a changed man. The Forza was exquisite, and the Ernani broadcast a few weeks later, which I saw live in person, were two of the greatest tenor performances, let alone two of the greatest Corelli performances, that I ever saw. A close rival were the two Philly performances I saw live in 68 of Romeo and Forza, with an honorable mention to a 66 Chenier with Tebaldi. Unequaled, in my experience.

      The few people here on yt that were enjoying the singers of the 50s and 60s (golden age) live are full of admiration and amazement. My question would be: Were you, back then, aware of the uniqueness of the voices and did you suspect that for a long time voices like Corellis would not be heard anymore?

    • @joannilson2900
      @joannilson2900 3 года назад +3

      @@jenspflug7473 A very thought-provoking question! I only started going to the Met when I was in grammar school in 1962, and went with my mother and family friends. So back then I was still learning. But in the 1950s, there had been tenors such as DiStefano, DelMonaco, Tucker ....and of course Bjoerlng had just died (1960). So I was raised in the environment in which Corelli, Bergonzi, Gedda, Kraus, etc were considered the new crop of greats in the 60's. Looking back, I think I was raised thinking that every decade has its greats. But yes - there was no way you could listen to Corelli and not know you were listening to something unique.
      What has surprised me in the many ensuing decades is that there seems to be such a dearth of voices with a truly unique personal timbre/sound. Back in the 50's-60's, I think that there was always the expectation that that "uniqueness" would always continue. Sadly, today - even with very fine voices, there is really an overall homogenized sound....
      I am just so grateful that we have so many recordings of all my favorites from my youth - and that current and future generations of opera lovers will be able to enjoy as well.

    Franco Corelli was huge & then his mezzo voce was a bonus unlike many others that can’t produce! However, his voice was just most well suited for Puccini’s Mario Caravadossi’s role in Tosca! Unreal, just unreal - Pavarotti was great but don’t think he could have surpassed Franco Corelli’s rendition !!! God bless them all - May they all rest in pacem !!!

      Corelli was just perfect also for Turandot, because you need a big tenor who can easily sing High Cs. For example Del Monaco could not do that and Pavarotti was too light

      Couldn't agree more. I always liked his voice, but didn't particularly care for his singing. Then he spent a whole summer in 64 with Lauri-Volpi. He came back in the 64-65 season to do Forza and Ernani and those performances made me a fan for life; he had become a different, and, in my opinion, a significantly better, singer. Before that, for me Bergonzi was the standard. But not after those Corelli Forzas and Ernanis. Unequalled.
