The most common kinds of glider launch by numbers are aero tow and winch launch. All the others (and even more) are methods that can / could be used, but usually are executed in very minor numbers. I would guess aero tow and winch launch make up between 80 - 90%, though self launching gliders are getting more common with reliable, light and powerful engines.
You left out a 12th, reverse auto tow when the wire is laid out on the runway and threaded through a pully on a swivel and the launch vehicle drives towards the glider. At Dublin Gliding Club we have achieved launch heights in excess of 4000' which I'm sure was a World record!
I was only able to find one low-quality video of that after I created this video. Would you happen to have a link to some footage. Very awesome stuff, indeed!
Excellent. You can also launch from the top of the membership, Shuttle Enterprise. Or you can do a balloon drop, although generally those are not manned.
You’ve got to see a helicopter launch, it’s basically a normal launch but at high altitude the helicopter goes to a hover and the glider just hangs there before release
@@StickandGlider I did not know this was done these days. the rest I knew..... I thought the problem was shifting gear.... not a smooth ride and risk of breaking the rope or safty pin.
those jets are awesome!... but ill take any except the snatch launch... that looked like a poor success rate..boat launch looks a bit sketchy also... ha
I have to disagree with SpaceShip2 and the Shuttle as Gliders, especially the Shuttle, as it has a very thin line between falling and gliding.. however, neither aircraft is capable of using a thermal in any form to gain height or to even sustain altitude... just being extra picky here
Fair point. However, upon re-entry, the shuttle was a glider. Gliders and sailplanes are different things if we are to dig deep into the definitions on each.
@@StickandGlider A single pulley setup makes a cheap substitute for a winch. Plus, it can be even faster as the vehicle is laying the rope for the next flight on the launch. Multiple pulley setups likes the one in the video are perfect for launching a glider out of a short unimproved sheep field next to a ridge or some other reliable lift source. It allows one to operate a glider as a STOL aircraft.
I searched if anyone uses rockets to launch gliders, and found this video. Well I did forget about NASA of course, but that's... not quite what I imagined when thinking about rocket-launched gliders.
catapult-start in a city? Are they mad ? There 're so many things that can go wrong and then you crush into a house andkill other persons maybe. This start is absolutly NONSENS and dagerous
That launch was done to recreate a real escape plan by prisoners in that very castle back in wwII - the cockpit had one dummy in it and everything was done according to air safety regulations (the real plan was never used as the war ended before they could finish)

The boat tow is hilarious
Love it!

That first snatch pickup attempt was a bit rough
Totally!
Let's shake things up by Saturn 5 launching a Schweizer SGU 2-22!
Hey, I've flown that K21 at Williams. I do mainly winch and aerotow, in the UK, but have also done some bungy launches too.
I really want to try a bungee launch! Also, pretty cool that we’ve flown the same K21!
Excellent. You can also launch from the top of the membership, Shuttle Enterprise. Or you can do a balloon drop, although generally those are not manned.
I think “drop from mothership” covers that one
Their is a 12 th way.
I flew for 10 Years a footlaunchebel glider ,its the German ULF 1
Nice! I just looked that up. Cool design.
Also the archeopteryx amd similar ones. But from a certification standpoint they are hang gliders and ultralights. But they still glide.
Wow airbourne so quickly behind the tug plane
Yeah, then you hangout in ground effect which is a cool perspective.
Could do with helicopter too and ballon
Actually you can divide auto tow into two methods: fixed line and pay out line (winch)
4:10 DID THIS MAN STRAP A JET ENGINE ON A GLIDER!!!!

James May special
The first glider (PW-5), in that picture by the beginning of the vídeo, is from Bauru, Brazil!
Yes, a club member shared it with me.
Very risky in dramatic weather, the aerodynamic can shattered without Engine 🙄
Nice video, but the punishing horrible music had to be muted.
Thanks for the feedback
Shoulder launch, greased board, horse, helicopter tow, balloon drop, missed a few....
I have seen the helitow. That seems a bit tricky with a slack line!
A Blanik behind a car.....????? to practice starts and landing I presume....
Yeah, not much altitude!

Jets looking like 007!
What about hot air balloon launch or electric self launch?
Hot air balloon sounds very interesting! I might have to do another chapter to show other ways, including the ones you’ve listed. Thanks for watching!

😁great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool
Pulley launching.

That is cool! Plus the added benefit of splitting the load. Thanks for sharing.

@@fixedwing8907 I think it's totally awesome to be "driving" toward each other during launch. Do you have any more footage?

Space shuttle launch 😂😂
One of the best! The shuttle was a glider, after all!
@ it definitely tickled me. Thanks for the video
they forgot hot air balloon you can search for it
