@@ProjectDanH Hey I’ve got a 2001 Grand Cherokee that had a 4.0 in it, it had an engine swap. I had to replace the power steering hoses and I can’t figure out what fluid to put into it. It has a mechanical fan, not the hydraulic fan. The dealership said Mopar +4 fluid, but I don’t really want to spend $10 a quart on it and I think it just has Red ATF fluid in it. It was leaking red fluid. Can I just get a big jug of ATF +4 and flush it out and be done with it? Im getting annoyed at this point 😅
MS10838 is the current spec, but MS5931 was the previous spec prior to being superseded, and it absolutely still works for originally spec'ed vehicles such as the WJ. It's also a lot cheaper, as you note there is a Valvoline fluid that meets MS5931 spec. That's all I use, and it works great. It blows my mind that a dealership gave you a +4 ATF. Actually, you know, sadly... it isn't really all that surprising. A lot of guys only know what the computer tells them.
Doug saved my 02 WJ (260k miles) cooling issue on my 4.7 hydraulic fan that I was chasing for 2 years. Had to change head gaskets because of it. I saw his video and bit the bullet and bought 3 quarts of the correct Mopar hydro fluid. 20 bux a quart. Flushed it and now that fan will suck a shop rag through the grill! Get the Mopar HYDRAULIC PS fluid!
Jeep My Life. I like that. I may have to start using that. Had a JML moment this weekend. My JML moment: Trying to diagnose an EVAP leak. I ended up messing up the feed line fitting AT the fuel pump. Had to drop tank (full of course) and replace the fuel pump module. Everything fought me every step of the way. Got it done in time despite Mother Nature.
I know this video is 3yrs old, but for the people who ended up here looking for a replacement for MS-10838 like me, DO NOT GET THE MOPAR POWER STEERING FLUID IN THE FIRST AMAZON LINK. They will bait and switch you and send the red ATF+4 brand. Many reviewers complain about this.
I was going to ask if you can completely fill it up with Valvoline 5931 because that Mopar 10838 is a nightmare to find now, but it seems like Valvoline 5931 is fine based on your videos and other comments. I won't say any names but I have placed a few orders of 10838 only to have people send me ATF plus 4, some of the companies were rude about it and told me I was "wrong" when I tried to return it. I have gone from mechanics advising me to sell my car to fixing it myself. You and Doug are life savers, I owe you guys some beers if I ever meet you! JEEP MY LIFE BUD!
Reminds me of when I did the high pressure hose on my XJ. I had to do a similar flush because I grabbed the wrong bottle and dumped motor oil stop leak instead of power steering fluid... Jeep My Life. I am starting to miss XJ content though...
Just wanted to share that the electrical cable that goes to the solenoid under the AC lines some time brakes... I this the pull and tug and found that the cable was indeed broken. Please check and see if that can solve your problem.
O'Reilly has the Chrysler MS5931 for $6.00 a qt. Has it right on the back and it is exactly what my manual says to put in the power steering pumps with the hydro fans. I have the 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4.7L... From the book "Mopar Power Steering Fluid (MS-5931)". YOUR THOUGHTS.....
Yeah, dealer couldn't show me where 10838 was compatible with 5931, so I found some Valvoline 5931, and I bought 3 quarts of Redline 5931, so I have some if I need it. I'm getting rid of all this monkey motion in a few days by doing a Lincoln Town car 2 speed electric fan conversion. Incredible information! I've got a doubt though: bought a 2006 grand cherokee Laredo, everything looks awesome BUT whenever and car is cold and I totally lock the steering wheel to either side, is makes a jiltering noise e.g wham wham wham, other than that everything looks as it should, what is the most probable cause: wrong fluid or low level of fluid (I didn't check the steering fluid level as I just bought the car) Thanks!
One of my biggest problems was realizing that the fan solenoid shares a fuse with the oxygen sensors. If your O2 sensor wires are shorted out it will blow your fuse and your hydro fan won't work
