Nice comparison Video. I am so glad I bought a Spykee for 100 quid and not a rovio. Although my first Spykee was 200 and was Broken! Things I like about that Rovio is.. 1, There is an SDK 2, Awsome camera from what I can see and I am a CCTV engineer, 640x480 is VGA, Not bad at all for a robot. 3, Camera Tilts That Lag is diabolical!! Make your next video a video of Spykee pushing Rovio out of a window.
Really good reviews on the Rovio and the Spykee. Most other videos don't tell me anything useful but yours covers everything that a buyer would want to know. Thanks alot, going to order my Spykee soon.
Just got my Rovio and have to say I'm not experiencing any of this lag. Tested on my iphone (iRovio app) over 3G and there is a slight .5 second lag, but very good overall considering I was using 3G. You really need to work out your specific problem and reconsider this video. I almost didn't buy mine after seeing this. The idea here is to help others not mislead them.
Thanks for the Video. I was in the process of purchasing a Rovio.... NOT NOW...I think I'll look for something better, maybe a Skykee....what would you recommend?
oh btw...you might wanna make the camera can see the infra red dot on the ceiling...the camera needs to see the infra red dot otherwise it can't triangulate its position....im pretty sure it doesnt have an IR sensor...
...I just thought - You have that bright Neon-light lined jukebox in line of sight of the Rovio, could the UV/Infra-red emissions from it be screwing with the re-docking process?
Thanks for the great videos, and opinions, I've put these on my wish list, but I wanted to say that after your reviews, I would create a hybrid of the two, I'm an evil genius that way, but what I was wondering if you can address multiple servos, or just the stock config.
Try upgrading your router to a multitasking high speed one. Try changing the wireless channel of the router to as high as it gets, and change a setting on the rovio in it's web interface: point performance towards more frames rather than better quallity. Quallity is unessesary eye candy that slows down performance.
I have had my Rovio for about a month now. I have had none of the external connection issues you seem to be experiencing my gut tells me your ISP might be screwing with ports or perhaps you might even have defective Rovio. These are weird symptoms there maybe something wrong with your Rovio. I use mine from work everyday (over 20 miles) away and I run it in 640x480 at 30fps and have VERY little lag.
i have a rovio, and it works like a charm, controls are very well, picture is clear and fast, even on my iphone it reacts perfect, even if i'm not on a 3G network. This guy here, is giving critism that is not correct. We've tested both robots, and choose permanent for the rovio cause of it's good quality and quick responds... Ofcouz if u use a crappy network and crappy computer it's all screwed up... ok the light is not that bright, but with a little mod it's a flare, and also works very well.
What a shame, it looks a great product. Have you contacted the makers of Rovio for their opinion, or do they have the same time lag with customer relations communications too?
Okay, so have you tested this Rovio via other wireless routers/modems? I haven't seen it this slow on other home-made videos here on youtube. The more recent ones are even controlling theirs through an iPhone without problems.
Sven - do you still maintain that this is normal performance? Plenty of online vids appear to show more normal - less laggy operation. Improved by firmware updates perhaps?
I have a Rovio for a year and it doesn't take me 2:51 to logon through the Internet. It is, in fact, very responsive. I wonder why it took so much time to start up on your network.
You are right, the ceiling, floor, almost floor looking is a good example, that people are not capable to lead projects, and get now in releasing and selling just ... guess the word...
Try to reposition your access point... Some wireless clients don´t have good radios. iPad is a an example. So, try to reposition your access point or install one more in WDS mode to replicate the signal.
@TheYahtzeeClub you should buy spykee.Your gonna have a bunch of problems with rovio...ex.if you have carpets in your house rovio will not be able to dock succesfully.Sorry for the lateness of my reply,i just checked it
I own 3 retail store and had ordered 4 of these per store all 12 were sold and returned. the Rovio is very hard to set up and there is NO customer support on it. If you call there tech support line you get a recording to vist there web site. DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU KNOW YOU CAN RETURN IT, BECAUSE YOU WILL!!!
I tried that test drive thing, you get 5 mins to drive it around so guess how long it took to for the screen to load, yep, 5 mins did nothing, think id prefer spykee anyway

It's very strange, in your other video "ROBOTWARS" the Rovio seems to behave fine, with no lag.
best thing to do: get spykee. Spykee falls over and has a few minor, easy to fix bugs, rovio has BAD bugs. next time you get something, compare it and watch review vids.
Svengalie, a lot of your complaints about Rovio seem to be you got a bad Rovio (yes, not toooo uncommon). But my Rovio docks perfectly, battery life hasn't been an issue (1hr+), and I haven't had the remote access and delay issues you've had. Hope you can return it for another! My Rovio is far from perfect, but it doesn't suffer from the problems you complain about...
How the hell does the better framerate mean the better it works!! The less framerate the less Data needs to be transfered, therefor the faster the robot should respond to movement through an internet connection!! So he tested it correctly. I can assure you that spykee does not lag as I have one and he is very responsive.
Wow. I am SO glad I bought a Spykee over this pile of poo! Thanks for the heads up, even if you can now get it to dock, the lack of functionality over the internet is really bad. Lets not look at these with too much criticism tho people - this type of toy is pretty damned new - over time new ones will come along and functionally blow these first-gen units away! *crosses fingers*
Im with you on this. THis guy is talking absolute nonsense. The spykee source code is available online and trust me its nothing to with skype. You can connect to skype with it to talk to other skype users. Also google chat and msn messenger. Absolute nonsense. As for the review I dont get any lag at all so maybe try using a different channel.
I've experienced the same issues with my Rovio as well... Rovio wont dock. Rovio sometimes doesn't charge. Rovio is WORTHLESS over the internet. Rovio camera is useless unless it is VERY bright.
It'll take a hacker weeks to collect enough packets to crack the wep unless they have a x2 quad core with +6g ram to brute force it then it will take maybe a week, and even then you will notice your bandwidth to slow! In no way am I endorsing wep, it's easy to crack if you have time. just saying you can't hack things like in the theaters =P WAP ftw, even better just lock mac addresses(fully).
i have a rovio and i had it for a few months and its awsome almost no lag my friend has a spykee and its ok but it lags more than the spykee i guess its just the internet
i take my comment back from the last vid about i hope it being better. lol. but i mean this is a complete let down, the spyke is meant to be not as good but here it proves that it is significantly better :S. what do u do for work anyway dosent look hard? lol
Your rovio is lagging because it is out of range of the wifi. Try putting the robot closer to your router/modem,wherever your wifi is. Then try again and reply to me
Hi, maybe you are right! My Rovio has the latest Firmware. That can be de difference. If you need, I can send you my Rovio Internet IP-Adress to test it your self.
I think you Rovio maybe faulty? My Rovio performs much faster than yours and it is instantaneous. I am using a b/g/n Wireless network. The only thing I like to comment is that the video is not very bright even though the room is bright, but I resolved it with a hack from the forums.
Why your doing some things wrong. 1.You need to have a 20 megapps or more internet speed so rovio can work without lag. 2.That table you have located blocks rovio's navigation signal,so he doesn't recognize where the charging dock is,and also can't record a path. Rovio test drive works great so why your doesn't?Because your internet connection is shit.Your having no problem controlling spykee cz he's made to be able to drivven remotely even with a bad internet connection.Rovio does not
Your PC-Wifi connection is shit, my Rovio has no delay. I recommend you to update Rovios Firmware, and re configure your Wifi correctly, as schown on the user manual....
Dude really, u have very bad internet connection and/or u have very bad computer, cause i have one of those and that page where i controll it, loads on a couple seconds! If broblem is the computer, get a mac, it really works...
It's slow because you probably have a virus. I will post a video response to show how fast it really is compared to Spykee. I havn't got both but Rovio is not that slow. It's very fast.

When it looks up and then straight back down when you pressed him, it means that i cant see the infrared beams attached to the home base.
Just got my Rovio and have to say I'm not experiencing any of this lag. Tested on my iphone (iRovio app) over 3G and there is a slight .5 second lag, but very good overall considering I was using 3G. lmao your voice when it was sped up :)

ok the light is not that bright, but with a little mod it's a flare, and also works very well.
looks like you had some other bright light source... is it possible it interfered with the rovio 'seeing' its 'north star'?
why didnt you try to 'go to blah' while it was in the dock? maybe it has to start out in the dock.
Have the latest firmware/software updates help at all with the Internet lag ?
What a shame, it looks a great product. Have you contacted the makers of Rovio for their opinion, or do they have the same time lag with customer relations communications too?
Ok now, what robot is better rovio or spykee?
Okay, so have you tested this Rovio via other wireless routers/modems? I haven't seen it this slow on other home-made videos here on youtube. The more recent ones are even controlling theirs through an iPhone without problems.

Hey am i able to try them both out at all? want to see how to works from Australia :P
the rovio doesnt dock because you dont have the beacon on. thats why it raises the antenna again and again.
You are right, the ceiling, floor, almost floor looking is a good example, that people are not capable to lead projects, and get now in releasing and selling just ... guess the word...
how tall is spykee in cm
i try to log in but it says authentication failure. tell me what that mean if u know.
Try to reposition your access point...

hi , does the problem it's already here with news firmwar?
@TheYahtzeeClub you should buy spykee.Your gonna have a bunch of problems with rovio...ex.if you have carpets in your house rovio will not be able to dock succesfully.Sorry for the lateness of my reply,i just checked it

It's very strange, in your other video "ROBOTWARS" the Rovio seems to behave fine, with no lag.
Yep, don't waste your money on gadgets that you only play with for a few hours.
best thing to do:
get spykee. Spykee falls over and has a few minor, easy to fix bugs, rovio has BAD bugs. next time you get something, compare it and watch review vids.
@Awezomenes can i drive your spykee please?
Svengalie, a lot of your complaints about Rovio seem to be you got a bad Rovio (yes, not toooo uncommon). Wow. Thanks for that. I'm glad I bought Spykee now!
Rovio firmware is now 5.0 does that do any good?
How the hell does the better framerate mean the better it works!!

wow, thanks for this video. I was going to buy the Rovio until I saw this. Thanks!
Do as I said, then tell me if the rovio is better than spykee
Im with you on this.

Nice Room BTW
Video made me laugh, I use the word "Doobrie" frequently to describe something that I cant name lol
@moieric2002 can i test it?If you wish plz send me a message. Thanks,i want to see if there is any lag
I've experienced the same issues with my Rovio as well...
Rovio wont dock.
Rovio sometimes doesn't charge.
Rovio is WORTHLESS over the internet.
Rovio camera is useless unless it is VERY bright.
i mean that red thing above it. I didnt saw that. I dont know this gadget very much.
@Awezomenes,yeah
It'll take a hacker weeks to collect enough packets to crack the wep unless they have a x2 quad core with +6g ram to brute force it then it will take maybe a week, and even then you will notice your bandwidth to slow! The spyball from wowwee looks better than the rovio & spykee. Its smallest and isnt expensive
It didnt even say that u can use google chrome. Mine works just fine. Also most ppl use chrome is when Internet explorer starts to suck.
It's a shame Rovio didn't take the time to make a good product. The last part made me lol :D
i take my comment back from the last vid about i hope it being better. lol.
but i mean this is a complete let down, the spyke is meant to be not as good but here it proves that it is significantly better :S.
what do u do for work anyway dosent look hard? lol
Cool vid and to make a route u should start at home and then end at home
Sucks that you don't like them :x
Funny voice you had when you fast forwarded it though :P
Thanks for your report! I can save some money
spykee ftw. Spykee assures u that its a good robot. Rovio.....well lets say it has bugs to fix
Somehow I think your Rovio is defective. Mine has no problem around my house. I wonder why?!
O, that solves the mystery.
Your rovio is lagging because it is out of range of the wifi.
Try putting the robot closer to your router/modem,wherever your wifi is.
Then try again and reply to me
it works just fine when i tell him to go home or what i recorded.
He is correct. I have a Rovio as well. Extremely slow and unresponsive.
That was hilarious at the end!!! LOLOLOL
weps safe unless you have a passive network card soaking stuff up =P
My Rovio wouldn't charge up, ever, despite getting 2 of them. I got a refund.
@reply4reply rovio is good its just he might not ahve the latest firmare software and a pretty laggy connection.
Hi, maybe you are right! My Rovio has the latest Firmware. That can be de difference.
If you need, I can send you my Rovio Internet IP-Adress to test it your self.
it seems ur internet connection is lagging !
I think you Rovio maybe faulty? My Rovio performs much faster than yours and it is instantaneous. I am using a b/g/n Wireless network. The only thing I like to comment is that the video is not very bright even though the room is bright, but I resolved it with a hack from the forums.
mine works perfectly over internet with a dyndns account...
HOW COME YOU DONT HAVE A BUTLER INSTEAD, I THOUGHT YOU WERE RICH!
Oh hes just showing off. Oh he wants to live there! LoL
the problem may be your wifi speed, either to the rovio or from your computer
You've got a very bad connection dude...
Hummm. Internet chess is good.
u must have a slow internet
Haven't you heard of girlfriends or at least internet porn? Its just a toy!
Lol its flipping him off
@svengalie lol
SUPPA WASTA
Dude really, u have very bad internet connection and/or u have very bad computer, cause i have one of those and that page where i controll it, loads on a couple seconds! If broblem is the computer, get a mac, it really works...
It's slow because you probably have a virus. I will post a video response to show how fast it really is compared to Spykee. I havn't got both but Rovio is not that slow. It's very fast.
55 to 1.30 funniest vois ever!!!!
LOL...this is funny
are you working for them?
how can we check you are not doing publicity for a wrongly engineered product?
Post videos proving
bullshit! i think rovio is a lot better on my perspective that is!
