"JETTYWOLF TIP" - boating is expensive enough. Here's a tip I learned from a Custom Aluminum boat builder, artist from Alaska on "how to save money" for the fun part of fishing and boating.
and been using this ever since, in my Teleflex Seastar Hydraulic Steering on my boat......''works fine for me."
In the charter fishing business margins are tight. Tackle, boat, trailer, truck, licensing, insurances. Everthing mechanical needs ''constant maintenance''. especially in the saltwater world. If I find something that can save me $20 to $50, and it works, I'm in!

Thanks for your tips, Capt Dave. I've used ATF instead of the Sea Star fluid in my boat on the Chesapeake Bay since I retired and living on a fixed income. I'll try the Marvel Mystery since it cheaper yet. It tickles me to read some of the comments below where guys comment with their "theoretical" learning opposing your practical experience.

No intention of disputing Marvel Mystery Oil or the various grades of commercial hydraulic oil as far as which is better for boat steering, I can personally attest to this formula: 3 parts ATF , 1 part #2 diesel. I have used this in two commercial fishing boats with NO seal leakage in 20 years.
