    Apple's pricing scheme is crazy. Earlier this year I went with an Apple refurb base-model M1 Studio because outfitted like I wanted it (more RAM & a large SSD), it was cheaper than an equivalently outfitted Mac mini. I am happy with what I got, but I'm disgusted with the inflated prices for hardware upgrades.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, I think we all are especially the 8 GB ram standard going on in 2024. I mean they can't spend another $15 bucks to add 8 GB. Very odd choices for sure. 12 or 16 should be base and the storage should be 512 GB base.

    If it's 2.5x faster than 27 inch iMac, then I didn't really miss much lol. I have the fully spec'd iMac 2020 but with 1tb storage. I personally didn't like the 24" size. Would choose 2.5x slower for the 27 inch lol.

    I completely agree, another big or a blast "leap" for the 8 GB memory setup which you can't upgrade at all (and yep, be waiting for the new, more powerful "pro" version for another ~1.7 K $ soon ). Thanks for the honest review, Craig.
    I am not against to pay for the design, for the reliable and flexible software (since using the Apple the last 8 years) but I must say that they recent policy is confusing and too greedy. I can pay but show me the reason (the nice color and loud advertisement it's not enough).

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  9 месяцев назад +1

      You are correct for sure. 8 GB ram and 256 GB is just plain out unacceptable in 2024. They should just add the $200 to the price and start with 16 and it would be less of an insult. I love Apple products but how much money did they save. Even starting with 12 GB on the base is something we would be more happy with. Also, the iMac has no Pro model. I'm guessing if they do come out with a 27" it will be 3K so that would have been a great option for some. Anyhow, it's just unusual to say the least.

      Or just use the regular M2 Mac mini with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD for $1,000 USD. Get a 27-inch QHD LG monitor for $250. Wireless keyboard/mouse and 1080p web camera for $70. Total pre-tax = $1,320.

    I'll be hanging on to my refurbished M1 MBP 14. If I upgrade the new model to same specs (un-binned Pro chip/16GB/1TB) it would cost me $500 more than I paid for mine. I can't justify paying that much for the admittedly nice spec bump of the M3.

    • @akin242002
      @akin242002 9 месяцев назад +1

      No need to upgrade unless you need the new GPU performance. For coding on the CPU, it is only a 15% improvement for performance cores against the M2. 30% improvement against the M1.

    Craig - the base model 14” loses a port, has no thunderbolt 4, and comes with only 8GB RAM, thus the price cut to get it into the range of 13” MBP

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, but it still has 8 GB ram as the base. I mean if $1,599 then it's not a great deal. I know you get the screen and other items but you have to assume this is a min of $1,799 as you need 16 GB for sure.

    I am disappointed in the limited configuration options on the iMac. I recall ordering my 2017 iMac. There were numerous processor, memory, storage options. They’ve turned a machine that could be used by advanced amateurs and even pros (what with its 5K display) into essentially a student or household unit. Why isn’t there the option to at least get the M3 Pro chip with similar config options as the 14” laptop?

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  9 месяцев назад

      I ask the same question. There should have been a M3 Pro option for sure. People are saying it might not fit into the chin of the new iMac but if that's the case then that is a terrible design flaw.

  • @Mega_Casual

    The new M3 imac does give you the choice of 24gb ram where the M1 maxed out at 16gb.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, but you are around $1,900 for 24 GB and only 512 SSD. So it's not the best. They need to do more with the base and they should have come out with a Pro chip in the iMac. That would have been a great system.

    Meh?
    Aw, you guys don't like anything.
    My sister got a base model M1 MacBook Air last spring. She's a teacher and she's delighted with it.
    I just got my long-wished-for M1 MacBook Air with twice the RAM and twice the storage. I'm loving it.
    They almost specifically said the new Space Black is NOT like the previous midnight blue one.
    Yeah, the M3 is the same kind of incremental increase that the M2 was. They're comparing this to the M1 and intel Macs because the iMac and a lot of other Mac owners are still on the M1 and intel Macs.
    It's time to upgrade already!
    So that's why "50% faster than the M1, " and "11 times faster than intel Macs."
    You've been waiting. It's time to stop waiting and get a new Mac.
    This new M3 is impressive, but I'm still getting a kick out of the M1 after my old "Ivy Bridge i3" 13" MacBook Pro.
    The M3 is faster than most other machines in the market. That alone qualifies as "scary fast."
    Not to mention it runs cool and has exceptional battery life.
    A "black iMac"?! Are you nuts? Do you really think that would look good??
    8GB of RAM allows for a low entry price and 8GB really is good enough if you're not pushing your Mac more than most people do.
    You guys just look for things to try to complain about. Nobody said you had to actually buy one.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, not too exciting. Why 8 GB ram in 2024 coming up? The new iMac with 8/256 base. You know I love Apple but you are the first comment to think this is a good upgrade. Yes, if you need a computer they are nice but if you have an M1 or M2 you should not upgrade. Also, no Pro chip in the iMacs is a disappointment but they may not fit. I love Apple but these things need to be called out. I mean an extra 8 GB of Ram costs them like $20 at most and they can't do that. Also, I heard the ram is slower speed then the M1 and M2. People will buy the black color for sure and if you don't like it that is fine but I'm guessing it will be all over the place. Fingerprints and scratches should first be tested since that could be an issue. Anyhow, so far I have about 80 comments and I would say 90% are not too happy.
