7:28 oh! Wow! I totally didn’t expect to get an answer for this! I thought it was a lame question, but I decided to ask anyway, a bit for the RUclips algorithm and because I know it always nice to receive comments. I surely noticed you don’t ask to “smash that like button” and I do really appreciate that, and that’s why I always like your videos (because I get to the end of each video without enjoying every second of it with no interruptions). Thanks for the response.

James, you may see everyone else as equals but even though that's a nice attitude to take and how we should all treat each other those in power or with influence so have more power to get things done than say you or me. I don't know if this is the case with Ricky Gervais or Dave Chappelle but it definitely is of some people in power or with the ear of them.

New Order (with Peter Hook) is my favorite band. Have been since 1988. After that the list fluctuates. Joy Division ,Velvet Underground, Killing Joke, REM, Lush, Public Enemy and more . Too many bands to organize for a favorites list. My dream band would mostly be the "Quiet Ones": Geordie Walker on guitar, Jamie Stewart on bass, Bill Berry on drums and backing vocals, Alan Wilder on keyboards, plus (not so quiet) David Bowie and Victoria Legrand on vocals. Then whoever they all choose for a producer or producers.

  • @Name-iq8te

On the first thing, I'd like to add that belief in equality is often an *ideal* belief; we want people to be equal and so we try to treat them as equals where that benefits everyone but consequentially, it's often beneficial to recognise that some groups are marginalised and thus actual serious political dialogue about such groups may benefit from other ways of thinking. I say this, for example, as a trans woman.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuut, comedy is an art form and a joke's a joke, but if your entire joke is "wow! look at this group! haha, aren't they strange?" à la Little Britain, then it probably won't age too well.
Love your videos, all the best x

America is the size of the whole of Europe and Oasis were massive in America in the mid 90’s around 1996/1997, they just faded out of popular culture over there as the boy bands then later nu-metal became more popular, so they weren’t the era defining band over there that they still are today in the UK & Ireland 🎸🎶

Hi James, firstly, I enjoy your videos, so thank you. But I wanted to say something about your punching-down comedy comments and everyone being equal. I can't entirely agree with what you are saying here. It's easy as a white man to say that you treat everyone equally, but that's not other people's reality, some people start from a disadvantage, for a variety of reasons, gender, race, disability, poverty etc... I believe we should elevate people if we are in a position to do so, not take cheap shots for laughs. I also think that the punk spirit is more about disrespecting authority than it is about laughing at people. That being said, if something is funny, then it's funny and I wholeheartedly agree that comedians should be free to make people laugh as part of their performance, come what may, but punk it ain't. I just think we should be mindful that the 'everyone is equal' attitude works for you in your position, but perhaps not for those being laughed at.

Gervais and Chapelle are in fact punching up. You can trash, poke fun and criticize men, whites, heterosexuals, christians etc all you want without any repercussions. But criticizing or making fun of “protected” groups gets you cancelled and sometimes even arrested. One is not allowed to criticize or make fun of these groups. They must be celebrated and held in high esteem. So, Gervais and Chapelle are in fact the ones punching up and they are stunning and brave for doing so.

    • @andrewingham

I wasn’t referring to the comedians, they are performing, and can say whatever they want. I was referring to James really and his ‘everybody is equal’ comments. I just think that it’s easy to say that when you’re like him, instead of saying that some people need support, kindness etc. mixing up a performer and real life is where I believe the issue is.

I think with gervais there’s a meta level of humour going on, where what he is really ridiculing is the class of people who take literally everything at face value and employ no critical thinking skills, it’s just a shame he has to explain that before he starts his routines.

Boston always had a high affiliation with British culture & music. Because they're the closest large US city to Britain, they used to get all of the good import records/CDs first, back when. You could go into any mid-to-large record or CD shop & find all the latest stuff from Dublin/London. U2 had a huge following in New England early on, they played large venues there before War came out.
WBCN & other Boston radio always had top UK talent on rotation before the rest of the US.

The thing with the humour issue is that it ignores the fact that society ISN'T equal and prejudice definitely DOES EXIST.
Also you'll notice as well that certain topics like, say, armed forces members who've lost all their limbs at war, or politicians linked to serious s*x offenders simply don't crop up with these comedians. Why?
Do I want to hear jokes aimed at such stuff? Not really. But why are we not hearing them if it's 'fair game for everyone'?
For the record someone like Steve Coogan is much closer to a 'punk' comedian than a sell out like Ricky Gervais.

James thanks for bringing up my question regarding certain “comedians” being punk etc. I really enjoy your content and I know you’re an intelligent guy, your recent break down of Viva La Vida for example was brilliant and I feel it’s in that kind of analysis that you really shine. But this also means I can’t buy the “I’m just a simple northern lad” line. I do think you have a bit of a blind spot regarding the topic at hand due to being in a position of privilege and as an influencer, you carry some responsibility with your messaging. I am also someone who grew up working class in Northern England in the 80’s and I understand lad culture, and banter among mates. I can also admit it often included a hefty dose of misogyny, racism and homophobia that I thankfully grew out of. In any case redirecting the conversation to that is something of a straw man argument, the fact is when we talk about punching down and that indicating people are not equal, what you’re not understanding is equality and equity are not the same thing, it’s about access to power. Attacking trans folks for example, serves simply to dehumanize and cause harm. That is not very punk in my opinion. It can’t be 1994 forever.

About punching up and punching down... It's hard to explain just how wrong you are on this with a short post, so I'll be more detailed. We may all be equal in principle, but we don't all have equal power and privilege. Your take makes as much sense as if you went back in time and told Martin Luther King, Jr. "What's all the fuss about? You're already equal! Why are you fighting for black rights?" Another analogy: someone who was born into a rich family and from that launched their music career might get a ton of people coming up to them asking them for selfies any time when they step into public, while someone who grew up in poverty and has schizophrenia and lives on the street will be avoided or treated as invisible by the same people. This is not equality in the sense of ACTUAL equality. People get treated differently, this is just a fact of life. I don't think we can ever have total equality, but we can strive to make a society where people don't suffer disadvantages just because they were born in a certain place, with a certain skin color, ethnicity, sexuality, etc. We still have a lot of work to do. Just being in a marginalized group means you have to deal with negative impacts of society that you don't have to or are way less likely to if you're not in that group. Punching down in comedy can literally hurt marginalized people in real ways. For example, in the U.S. and around the world there's a lot of hate toward transgender people right now. Rates of violence against them have shot up. There's so much fearmongering and misinformation. There's so many bills being introduced in the U.S. to limit their rights and straight-up personally attack trans people now. There's high suicide rates and suicidal ideation these people experience, and I have a couple of trans friends who have told me horror stories of being bullied and threatened just for existing, and often it's the same sort of humor that's been to weaponized and cut them deep. Not because they're too sensitive, but because of the way many in society still hate, fear, or misunderstand them. Dave Chappelle is in a position of power. Even with your level of success you have more in common with a homeless man than him, that's how rich and powerful he is. The problem is not just jokes being offensive, it's them being not really jokes and actually harmful. It's spreading harmful rhetoric that a lot of people don't actually take as a joke. And I think in comedy context matters. A lot of messed-up jokes are funny precisely because they're so messed up. I don't find most jokes about rape funny but when George Carlin joked about "people say rape isn't funny but...", I thought that was funny because acknowledges the messed-upness of joking about rape while being meta and self-aware. It was witty. With a lot of jokes like this (or "The Aristocrats") people are literally laughing because they know it's messed up. In theory it would make sense for those types of jokes to be "anything goes". But I think often Chappelle isn't really joking, and he's just expressing bigoted and ignorant views. And a lot of people don't laugh because it's so messed up like an Aristocrats joke, but because they're like "haha so true" and they're agreeing with bigotry. Chappelle is a rich celebrity with a powerful platform, so he's a bad influence on a lot of people. That's why I think it's worth calling out people like him out. I don't really believe in canceling people, I would just hope they learn and be better. You can't learn or get better if nobody gives you feedback so it's important. I appreciate you at least responding to that comment, and can only hope this one makes you at least understand why so many people get upset at certain comedians. It comes from a place of genuinely caring about the disadvantaged and those hurt most by society. That's what marginalized means.

There is no such thing as “punching up” and “punching down.” In fact, by saying you’re “punching down” at some group of people, you’re elevating them above all else. And by that logic, poking fun at those groups is actually “punching up.”

In my opinion, the whole and only reason why it is wrong for comedians to make jokes about marginalised groups is that are already "being punched " by many other groups, including violent ones. This is, again in my opinion, the reason why we say "punch down "; they already on the floor 😢.
The "job" of a comedian is to be funny, its not funny when someone is curled into a ball shielding their head from the blows.

I appreciate you being very respectful about this and I completely get where you’re coming from. I have got to be honest though I share James’ opinion; maybe for slightly different reasons. For me I think that the farest way to treat people is to treat them the same so to make jokes about all people regardless of what group they belong to or make jokes about none of them, like James I think that the ability to make jokes or ‘take the piss’ is a sign of closeness and actually takes power away from the insult. Similarly I welcome any joke from anyone about anything I do, I think if we can learn to laugh about our differences it is A positive, and B it suggests we can discuss in a positive manner our differences and through that dialogue better understand each other. Just my opinion though feel free to disagree and please remember it is with the intent of accepting/celebrating people, not marginalising them.

@@thewave8468 personally, I think that "banter" should be between friends, i.e people who know you and can jab back. (BTW I hate lad banter, especially what grew in the 90s)
But it is very different when you are on a stage, literally looking down on an audience and snearing. In my opinion its about how that comes across.

Comedy only being about attacking people in authority is silly it's never been just that. It can be but the whole modern "punching down" line that's recycled over and over is so silly.

Regarding Chappelle's trans jokes, it seems he's envious of the progress they've made on equality compared to black people. It's obvious he believes they don't deserve it but instead of attacking the people in power keeping everyone down he's lashing out at those he feels are less worthy than him. It's a crabs-in-a-bucket mentality and sad to see.
I don't know about Gervais, I've never liked his persona or comedy. He's always struck me as the kind of person who would say something mean or "edgy" to see if it would get a laugh. He's never had to struggle against discrimination or marginalisation in his life.

The kinds of things the 1st questioner describes as 'punching down' has a spell over all western governments, corporations, schools, banks, entertainment etc etc. Even if one were to agree only punching up, I fail to see how it doesn't qualify. Taking the piss out of it is a comedian's duty.
