Paul you absolute star !!! I have been miffed of with my jetboil since I bought it, as when I put the gas and stove inside vertically I couldn’t shut the lid, it never even occurred to me to put them sideways !!!!! Thank you 😊
Not sure you’d get the pot support thingy for the skillet in there too with the canister even if you turn on the side, but obvs really good if you’re not taking the skillet👍🏻
@@JackKlumpass The pot stand is really compact. Jetboils have a packing order for the components that ensures that everything gets stowed away. His point about the non-rattling is important.
@@jonmathias6159 thanks Jon, when I get a chance I’ll get mine out of storage and try, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t all go in - the burner + canister yes if sideways but not with the pot support too. I never really used mine much, not really a fan and mainly use alcohol burner set ups instead these days (speedster or trail designs). The only gas set-up I’m a fan of is the gsi pinnacle with a decent wind guard have that is firm but not too heavy. My Mini mo is too much of a weight penalty and too bulky for my liking.
I struggled with my choice between these two stoves. I am a huge MSR fan, but I ended up buying the MiniMo. I liked the versatility and shape of the MiniMo. I have not had to cook real windy conditions. Both are great stoves! Thanks for a great video.
Thing is with the jetboil and the pot adapter is that you don't have to use the jetboil brand pans or pots, you can use anything you want on it. Both have french press accessories (I have the jetboil one), the jetboil has a hanging accessory for the traditional narrow one.
RUclips genius suffers for his subscribers. Thanks for taking one for the team, the egg and bacon butty must have a been a test :). Thanks and Stay Safe Sel
Good job. I already have the JetBoil, so it's nice to know I didn't go too wrong in choosing. But I did find the frying pan to be very tippy. One bump of the table and my dinner was all over the place.
Thanks for the in-depth review, great stuff! I have been a long time Jetboil user but the performance of the MSR Reactor and WB are unequalled in windy conditions, they just wipe the floor with any other stove on the market. Most of my outdoor activities are in the mountains and, surprise surprise.. it's windy! MSR for me, it's a no brainer. The WB may fall behind the JB in certain aspects, but all of those disadvantages are outweighed by far when it comes to performance in harsh conditions, at least in my book. The ability for boiling water quick when other stoves barely heat it is a godsend in many circumstances. If it's family camping etc then that's a different story, I think it comes down to your intended use of the stove. Truth be said if I were family camping I would be using cheaper options than either of these.
I also use a Windburner and it is great not to deal with a windscreen for any kind no matter how the weather is outside. For melting snow in subzero temps... well... that's a whole different thing and I use an Primus Omnifuel with white gas for that!
Thanks for the comparison , seems like I want them both. Yourself, AB Camping and Corporals corner really help me out for my low budget choices. Thanks again to all.
I've had a Jetboil for a few years now (the Sol in titanium). Absolutely great for winter day walking (when you need more than a flask) and for solo car camping when you're eating out during the day and just need the odd brew / breakfast. Great comparison and not much between them in normal conditions. I have just ordered a Jetboil skillet, having seen how it performs. 👍
Interestingly, my minimo pot support is super tight. Need 2 hands for sure to get it on the canister. But most importantly, you've shown me how to viably carry eggs. Never thought of using a bottle lol!
Thanks for the review Paul. I have the Micromo which is a tall narrow Jetboil. I like it but it is a little sensitive to wind which always seems to be blowing in the foothills and mountains of Northern California where I go hiking and because of that have become more interested in the Windburner recently so appreciated your review.
I have a barely used Jetboil. Early model, no integrated lighter. It doesn't suit making meals so I take my Trangia gas system for multi day trips where actual cooking will be done. Sea kayak or car camping, so weight is no problem. I use the Jetboil for hot water drinks when at the beach for a swim, but can just as easily carry a flask of boiled water. The two reviewed here will each do a job for backpacking but there are lighter options if just to boil water.
Have the windburner and used it for multiple camps. No issues whatsoever even for summit brews. As for the rattle I just use an old sock to keep everything snug
Myself, I couldnt decide so I bought both. And more often than not I use the Jetboil. Its just that little bit more versatile and better thought out. And just as you said, where the MSR wipes the floor with the Jetboil is in the wind but in the end I couldnt stomach buying into the MSR only dedicated system.
Yes, I've had a Jetboil for years. It's really good at what it does. I always have it on winter day walks (flask is better in the summer) and with me on solo car camps (use a Trangia with gas burner when there are more people car camping).
Great shoot-out! I was laughing when you were measuring the water you were putting in by looking at the pots, when there are markings on the nalgene bottle!
As a novice I would say that the jet boil is a fair way ahead (except in windy conditions) especially if both are used with the MSR lowdown stand that you reviewed a few weeks ago. However, I've got to do more camping to be sure that I can justify (to myself) splashing out on what are both premium products. Either way, I enjoyed hearing your comments.
Great review Paul 👍 For all how good it is I would still know which to.choose though! Maybe a wind test and boiling water for a brew in the wind would be good
I have both and i use my jet boil pot support on my wind burner. You must mill out the support to expose the burner to keep from over heating the stove. This could be a problem on your backpack trip if you were to over heat it because now you're down a stove unless you know how to reset it in the field. The wind burner has a nice heat distribution with the support. Msr's pan concentrates the heat in the center of the pan as you demonstrated. This is why i didn't go with their pan. The jet boil pan works great with the msr because they now both have good heat distribution. Using the jet boil with their pan is ok if you move the pan around to keep from hot spoting your pan. So far I'm still using the msr. Use at your own risk if you modify your pot support. It seems theres always something wrong with the design. I'm Norwegian so using a frying pan is a requirement.
Nice experiment Paul. Very interesting results not alot in it. If I was to buy one it would be the Minimo because of the cooking and shape. Atb Graham 👍

For anyone on a budget I bought a 'Fast Boil' made by Highlander for about £50 - very much like the jetfoil and slightly longer boil time - but you could buy three of these for the price of the MSR.
you the man... great review, If i were to use a skillet then the jet boil would be the one for me but since I dont fry food then the MSR wind burner i think is a better unit for 4 seasonal use, always great to see your reviews Paul. Really good comparison! I was just wondering how much gas they'd used, and then you checked that too. Now you just need a MSR WindBurner Hanging Kit to cook inside the Rab tent!
Excellent comparative test. I was leaning towards the Jetboil purely because I'll always take a wider pot over a narrower one for the same volume. Another consideration is that, if you only need to boil water (where the Windburner has an advantage), there are much lighter and more efficient alternatives to both these stoves.
I suspect that a decent alcohol burner plus windshield etc is lighter overall than any gas set-up. Sure, boil times are longer but if you're so impatient that you need water boiled in three minutes, backpacking is probably not for you...

Thanks for the in-depth look at these setups. This was really helpful in giving the extra information required to make a decision about which of these would be suitable for your needs. Pretty sure everybody's main gripe with this type of burner is their inability to cook on a skillet or pan. Saying that though, I think that's true of all camping type stoves, be it an alcohol stove or mini bush-box.
Hi, with my MSR windburner, the burner goes in first, then the gas sits on top (it locates in ring on burner) then support feet sit on top of gas can. I think that is how MSR intended it to go together but I don’t suppose it really matters 🙂 thanks for the videos, keep ‘em coming 👍
I think it rattles slightly less with burner in first, but the important thing is to remember to check you have enough gas before you go out! I think we have all been caught out by that sometime 😂
Awesome video! With the MSR, be sure to put the cap back on to the gas canister when packing up, otherwise you may damage the pot. Would love to see a high wind comparison. I’ve boiled water in mine in conditions where other stoves would not stay lit or never get water to the boil.
Great video Paul. I have the MSR but didn’t realise they made a frying pan for it. I love the MSR but for the price of the pan I can take Gordon Ramsey with me 😂. Be interesting to see what everyone else thinks about the MSR wind burner frying pan.

Thanks Paul, been so looking forward to watching this one since you first shown the windburner. Another great video. Trouble is I might have to buy both now.😆
Perhaps we seem to have a different idea of what compact means..I bought the Minimo and its the bulkiest stove I have, especially considering the adapter need to use a skillet does not fit inside when packing it away when the gas can is inside. I noticed you use the skillet but then pack away and skip the part of what to do with the adapter. I can fit a small gas can and my Soto Amicus burner inside a Lixada 650 titanium pot, and no special adapter needed, no wind break need, and about half the size.
Great comparison Paul, I've got Jetboil Zip and Alpkit Brukit and recently bought the Optimus Polaris Optifuel which I've started using more with heatsink 1.5ltr pot plus Sea to Summit 10inch skillet, both doing great, as I want to cook proper meals when I do the Tour Du Mont Blanc in July... plus I get the option of multiple fuels and not have to worry on just gas ... 😉👍 Great vid Paul.. ps try the Optimus Polaris Optifuel stove it's a beast ...
Hi Paul really enjoy the content! Would you consider a video on some kit to bring the family/dogs along? Now that it's summer..ish I want to take every one out for more than a night but still have decent kit. Either way thanks for the videos
Good morning Paul great review as always has helped me make my mind up 👍 could you also recommend a good power pack for re charging my equipment when camping?
Hi Paul the MSR you are testing is more like the jetboil flash 2.0 wouldn’t you say rather than the mini-mo, the flash cup does also have the measurement markings within the clear cup/base cover
I have a hard time with no wind being used in this comparison. My understanding is the Windburners main strength is in wind and Minimos main weakness is in wind. Though clearly from this review in calm weather the minimo is better, but Im trying to see the difference in both types of weather
The burning in the middle is more due to the burner than the pan I think. With the flame being so central, no matter what pan u put on the jetboil, it's still gonna burn in the center.
Nice comparison Paul! US watcher here! I've used your Jetboil Stash as the basis for a couple vids of mine. Have another one coming out in a few weeks. Cheers!
Great video Paul. Would you mind doing a comparison of different brands of gas? I use primarily Coleman Performance and Primus gas with no discernable difference. But during a recent DofE expedition I was leading they were given some cheap canisters for the Trangias and the performance was shocking.
Paul, what about some advice on a good lightweight skillet/frying pan. Can't find one that doesnt burn the sausages. The ones I have tried are all too thin.

Am in the market for a compact stove think the jetboil wins it for me both good stoves though
Well Done Paul!!!
Good video. Pretty even although, in any type of wind, the MSR will dominate the Jet Boil.
Hi Paul really enjoy the content!
Would you consider a video on some kit to bring the family/dogs along? Now that it's summer..ish I want to take every one out for more than a night but still have decent kit. Either way thanks for the videos
I think a fair comparison with regards to frying would of been the jetboil flux ring pan..
Good morning Paul great review as always has helped me make my mind up 👍 could you also recommend a good power pack for re charging my equipment when camping?
It's all about the brown HP sauce !
Hi Paul the MSR you are testing is more like the jetboil flash 2.0 wouldn’t you say rather than the mini-mo, the flash cup does also have the measurement markings within the clear cup/base cover
Really informative video paul had to make a bacon n egg butty after watching it though
I have a hard time with no wind being used in this comparison. My understanding is the Windburners main strength is in wind and Minimos main weakness is in wind. Though clearly from this review in calm weather the minimo is better, but Im trying to see the difference in both types of weather
Hi Paul, do you know if you can fit the food pouches in the Minimo to boil them or is it to small.
Ah it's for straining and drinking lol I thought for steam 😅 great comparison
G’day Paul
Greetings from Oz. The weight you quoted for the gas, was it total canister weight or gas only
Very useful review. Thank you Paul!
The burning in the middle is more due to the burner than the pan I think. With the flame being so central, no matter what pan u put on the jetboil, it's still gonna burn in the center.
great video sir. what kind of bacon that? looks nice
Good comparison test 👍
Paul - would the Jetboil Flash not be the fairer comparator stove? Great video as always my friend 👍🏼🙂
very good in depth review. thanks!
What kind of camera and equipment do you use to take movie?
