It's actually a really good hobby. People who scoff at it don't think about the fact that every hobby is like this: Gamers will spend hundreds on a console with controllers and then spend on a library of games that cost $60-80 each and that's before you consider that preorders come with extra memorabilia that increases in worth as time makes each one left more scarce for fans. Online games even charge for subscriptions on a monthly basis. And that's just console gaming, on PC people will spend thousands on upgrading and pimping out a desktop. People who like cars will spend thousands (sometimes hundreds of thousands to millions) on a car of a make and model that appeals to them then they kit them out to extremes of customization in features, electronics, and paint jobs. They create works of art and in the process render the damn thing unusable for general utility which is the reason behind the invention of vehicles. People who like alcohol will spend exorbitant amounts of cash on their drinks of choice and few will judge them despite the fact that it’s literally just a drink regardless of name or origin. Wines of vintages can go for thousands and their hobby is actually seen as refined for it because each bottle of a certain age is supposed to come with a story of the year it was made in the place it was made. People who learn to play instruments will spend hundreds on more and more equipment, some of it is the instruments but most of it is amps or electronic equipment. The ones who start bands will spend on transportation as well, sometimes it's van and other times it would be pulling a trailer. The cost can top several thousand dollars just to get set up and that doesn't include all the little things like gas and the food or drink you would be forced to buy while at a gig. The hobby of breeding and trading reptiles is something which can seem senseless if you don't understand the interest but to those of us who do enjoy it there's nothing that can even come close to the joys it brings. Everytime you breed a creature there's a sense of intrigue that enthralls you, there's a sense of wonder that overtakes your thoughts as you imagine to yourself what is going to come of each pair. Will some genes you have been refining be expressed more strongly in the next generation? What color are these babies gonna be? What recessive factors does this species carry? Can I alter temperament of the offspring by crossbreeding a more unfriendly subspecies with a more friendly subspecies? What will a cross subspecies breeding look like? Will it alter care requirements and if so will there be visually identifiable distinctions that could denote them? Those are some examples but the point is the reptile hobby might get expensive but all hobbies have their cost and the reptile hobby inspires an inquisitive mind towards biology and more specifically genealogy so it's not a hobby for people with too much money, it's a hobby for someone who likes raising animals and learning about them.
Bro just ‘unboxed’ a $10,000 animal that was shipped in the mail…. is the point buddy was trying to make, I think. What if the mailman dropped it a bunch of times?

My desert tortoises brumate in a box on the floor under my dining table from October to March every year, if I didn't do so I'd be neglecting them. It is pretty weird but also when I remind myself everything about reptiles is the opposite of humans, anatomy, food needs, temperature and humidity needs, metabolism, then I realize it makes perfect sense for a reptile's safe conditions to not be the same as what I'd consider safe and comfortable for myself. They also cannot eat during that entire time, people might be tempted to feed them thinking "oh they must be so hungry" when tortoises are made to go months without enough food and weeks without water, but during brumation only water should be given because they stop metabolizing and food will rot in their stomach and kill them so you have to make your tortoises fast before winter if they brumate. Even some people on my tortoise groups go so far as to rig a special mini fridge to stay at exactly 44-50°F and put their torts in a box in the fridge to keep them at the exact right winter brumation temps. It's a pet you can put in the refrigerator, and they're totally comfortable and even benefit from it (if a tortoise is kept from brumating properly it cam make them sick later). A human would die living in a fridge for 3 months not moving or eating.

Most drivers would probably follow the instructions ( i would at least) but in the warehouses and on the lorry or plane, they don't care what is written on a package. That Gecko has been tossed around like a rag doll.

you can't just assume especially given he seems completely fine. theres really no other option unless you expect the breeder to drive a whole day to deliver it.
Or don't keep exotic pets

That sounds like a multiverse episode from Rick and morty.
Paid $10,000 for a color. The crested gecko market is ridiculous.
Just for people who don’t know how to spend their money
Reptile keepers really do be like that. Or people who pay big bucks for purebreed cats or dogs.
Nfts that can die
It's actually a really good hobby. People who scoff at it don't think about the fact that every hobby is like this:
Gamers will spend hundreds on a console with controllers and then spend on a library of games that cost $60-80 each and that's before you consider that preorders come with extra memorabilia that increases in worth as time makes each one left more scarce for fans.

The concept of shipping live animals in the mail, will never stop being weird to me. 😂
