CLIP DESCRIPTION:
George (Jack Nicholson) expresses an interest in joining Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) on their road trip to New Orleans.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tossing wristwatches away, two bikers hit the road to find America in Dennis Hopper's anti-establishment classic. After a major cocaine sale to an L.A. connection (Phil Spector), free-wheeling potheads Billy (Hopper) and Wyatt, aka Captain America (Peter Fonda, who also produced), motor eastward to party at Mardi Gras before "retiring" to Florida with the riches concealed in Wyatt's stars-and-stripes gas tank. As they ride through the Southwest, they take a hitchhiker (Luke Askew) to a struggling hippie commune before they get thrown in a small-town jail for "parading without a permit." Their cellmate, drunken ACLU lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson, replacing Rip Torn), does them a "groovy" favor by getting them out of jail and then decides to join them. Babbling about Venusians, George discovers the joys of smoking grass, but an encounter with Southern rednecks soon proves how right he is about the danger posed by Billy's and Wyatt's unfettered life in a country that has lost its ideals. With the straight world closing in, Wyatt and Billy try to revel in New Orleans with some LSD and hookers (Karen Black and Toni Basil), but the acid trip is shot through with morbidity. Once they reach Florida, Billy raves about attaining the American dream; Wyatt, however, knows the truth: "We blew it." Produced and directed by two Hollywood iconoclasts with under a half-million non-studio dollars, Easy Rider shook up the languishing movie industry when it grossed over 19 million dollars in 1969; it captured the spirit of the times as it woke Hollywood up to the power of young audiences and socially relevant movies, along with such other landmarks of the late '60s as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, and 2001. Shot on location by Laszlo Kovacs, Easy Rider eschewed old-fashioned Hollywood polish for documentary-style immediacy, and it enhanced its casual feel with improvised dialogue and realistically "stoned" acting. With a soundtrack of contemporary rock songs by Jimi Hendrix, The Band, and Steppenwolf to complete the atmosphere, Easy Rider was hailed for capturing the increasingly violent Vietnam-era split between the counterculture and the repressive Establishment. Experiencing the "shock of recognition," youth audiences embraced Easy Rider's vision of both the attractions and the limits of dropping out, proving that audience's box-office power and turning Nicholson into a movie star. The momentarily hip Academy nominated Nicholson for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and Fonda, Hopper, and Terry Southern for their screenplay. Though none of its imitators would match its impact, Easy Rider remains one of the seminal works of late '60s Hollywood both for its trailblazing legacy and its sharply perceptive portrait of its chaotic times.

Did Leo DiCaprio base all his "southern" characters on Jack's performance
Serge Kulyk Their voices are very, very similar!
Serge Kulyk fantastic catch. to such an extent it makes me think leo really practiced the mannerisms
jack based this on LBJ.
Jack inspired an entire generation of actors --- Leo was one of them
Jack based his voice on LBJ
Came for Jack Nicholson stayed for Jack Nicholson
I always come for Jack Nicholson
@@lexi7749 same
I came so fast when I saw him
Jack just comes
same here...he is just great.
50 years later and still timeless.
TIMELESS OH YES 👍
Dennis Hopper's face after he takes a swig of that whiskey tells you it was really strong af lol 😆
Yep, cause there's no such thing as acting. I'm sure he took several gulps of real whisky to film that scene instead of using apple juice and making a face.
@@1000jamesk
You beat me to it.
@@1000jamesk Can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic but this movie is notorious for the actors actually getting high during the filming of scenes involving substances...
Jim Beam will do that to ya first thing in the morning
It's Jim Beam, Smooth as could be.
The reference by Nicholson is to DH Lawrence buried at Toas, NM on Mable Doges' ranch. He and Hopper spent the night on his grave before the next day's shoot. Thus, the ad lobbed toast.
thanks. I wondered why the DH Lawrence reference. I assumed it was the Hansen character admiration for the writer.
Jack Nicholson is a living legend. Just Badass.
Doesnt matter if Jack had an unconvincing southern accent. He steals every scene hes in.
Jack was a head of his time
@@mikecarone7320 I guess he was on time.
Easy Rider One Flew Over Chinatown Last Detail
Nicholson was THE ACTOR OF HIS GENERATION
he reminds me of walton goggins! which is awesome
But Peter Fonda ranks right up there with McQueen for cool.
Love how the cop isn't even out of frame before Jack whips out the bottle. 😄
It’s gonna be a terrible day when Jack passes away.
I’m gonna watch a marathon of his movies to celebrate his life and career when he does
That thing Jack does with the "Nik-Nik-Nik, Indians" was a mannerism that Nicholson copied directly from one of the mechanics on the film crew that was responsible for maintaining the film's bikes. It's a reference to Indian motorcycles, not American Indians.
pR1mal not disputing the fact. I dont know for sure but don't see why its the Indian mc. NAs and problems with firewater is common knowledge. I'm Cherokee. But the mechanic was Dan Haggerty aka Grizzly Adams, who had a small roll as one of the hippies at the commune. of the 4 Captain America bikes used, the only one left was the one blow up at end of move. Fonda gave it to Haggerty and said put it back together if you want. Haggerty did and kept it for years then lent it out to a museum. when haggerty got sick with cancer he auctioned it off for over a $ 1 million to a former co restaurant owner of Fonda's. about 2 yrs ago.
I've read that too. That the mechanic in charge of keeping the bikes running would say the "Nic-nic-nic" part as he was ratcheting the motor up to top dead center with the kick pedal, then would yell "FIRE!" when he jumped on the kicker with the ignition on, hoping the bike would start. (Wishful thinking?) Not sure about the "Indians" part, though, I've never read an explanation about that. I always thought it was just Jack ad-libbing. He says "F-f-f" like he's starting to say the "Fire" part, but then decides not to and says "Indians" instead.
Mechanics name was Gypsie.
Nerd.
pR1mal Are you sure?🤔
Jack Nicholsons genius is that he makes other actors look good too. He makes Dennis and Peter look and sound every bit as counterculture as they’re meant to be just by being in the same scene, even when he’s stealing it from them, what an actor.
I love this scene, find it amazing that Hopper wasn't too keen at first as casting Jack Nicholson for the part. So, glad that he did.
I know this was filmed in the late 60s but the camera quality is so amazing it looks like a 2022 film set in the 60s.
There's something up with the whole film
Probably shot on a larger-format film. 65 mm or 70 mm.
35mm is timeless
It’s a restoration from the 35mm negative.

Hahaha.. Jack's a Legend. A bonafide American Original loll. Love ya Jack
My first R rated film I saw was One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
@@frankdenardo8684 another one of a kind movie. It's a real game changer. I love the movie but as I got older it was harder to watch. Jack really gave his all more or less in that one. Or was that just all Jack's personality? hmm.. food for thought! I can SO see Jack behaving just like that!
jack is the man.
Love how no less than 2 seconds after the cop walks away, he pulls out a bottle of booze in public 😂😂😂
Back then they didn't care unless you were shitfaced drunk or causing a scene. Do you like today's 'safety'?
Wasn't a big deal in the 60s.
May not have been illegal. I think NYC or somewhere had the law that you had to have the bottle covered up in public but you could still drink it. That's where the iconic hobo drinking out of brown paper bag came from.
I thought you can drink alcohol in public in us
Back then you just to stay in your vehicle .p
I’ve never noticed how Tom Cruise acting takes some of Jack’s moves

Jack is such a legend...just WOW what an actor
Regardless of the content, that was beautiful to watch. The faces, the colors, the acting. Very professional.
Nicholson was so GREAT in this role.
only Jack left now. sweet dreams Peter l.
The way he whips out that brothel card out of his wallet without even looking for it, it must have been the only thing (besides money and license) in there for years.
Career making scene. That exchange with the cop as walks away, that reference to D H Lawrence. These I think are things he brought to the script. If they are its why acting can be a creative process not just an interpretive one.
Jack looks so handsome and cool here ❤️
It’s gonna be a terrible day when Jack passes away.

Jack Nicholson' s glasses ! THE BEST ! :D

After Jack takes a drink I swear that move is just like something Jim Carrey would do.
Wow. Jack Nicholson and Leonardo Dicaprio really do resemble each other.
No
If this movie was ever remade which I hope it isn’t, I think Walton Goggins would’ve been perfect for George Hanson.
Through the film, Jacks performance reminded me a lot of Goggins for some reason

I used to quote "First of the day, to ol' D.H. Lawrence" when I was a big boozer 😄
This whole movie feels like all the actors and the crew were on LSD while they were working.
Since I was a kid in the 70’s , if I was asked if I’ve got a helmet......
I immediately see how Tom Croose copied Nicholson's facial expressions and laughter from this scene, in several of his movies in the 80s and 90s - especially the "The Color of Money"
What a memorable scene, what a great character the lawyer is and Nicholson really nails him. BTW, I have to say this, but Fonda and Hopper ripped off Terry Southern on the profits end of the film. Which were huge. Southern, who was fairly big at the time, said he would rewrite for scale and, in lieu of his usual salary, he would take a percentage on the back end.. He never got the back end. And there was plenty to go around. He could have used the money since he began to slide downward after this.
Do you have a citation for that claim? Just curious.
Classic
P.S. The Harley Davidsons of that era would more than likely have broken down before making it to the Arizona border.
Harley Davidsons of this era would more than likely break down before reaching the Arizona border. That's why mechanics love them, there is always work to be done with a Harley
That's why they branded their engines as "knucklehead"-----that's who would ride them.
Some things never change.
Jeff Brownlee, no you had to rebuild a Harley Davidson every 10,000 miles
Unless you were a good mechanic
What did he swig Jim Bean? Also i missed this film growing up will have to see it, have heard its a masterpiece 💜
