The transistor must be low-noise FET (so it will not shunt the coil when off) and there must be a mica condenser filter after the diode 1000 - 3300 pF it allows to work properly the detector. The Schottky diode is better than germanium, because of highest dynamic impedance, so the sensitivity and selectivity must be better.

According to K1OIK, you can make more contacts with a Q Multiplier. I need to check this out.

ZN414 or TA7642 TRF IC works a treat too

like a classic regenerative receiver with separate AM demodulator circuit... similar than plate detector, but lowest impedance...

You can also use a BJT as a detector in stead of using a diode. See b-kainka.de/bastel3.htm "Kurzwellen-Audion" in which a BJT detector is used together with a minimalistic differential pair Q Multiplier.

Have you tried litz wire before? Does it help the Q at all?

      Haven't tried it.

Apparently for Medium Wave band, it has a pretty impressive Q factor and selectivity because of the greatly increased surface area of the conductor. Here is an example that has 960 insulated 46 gauge wires! Tinning 960 insulated wires is a pain but it is like winding coils with 1.44 inch in diameter wire that is only 1.8mm in diameter. It's pretty expensive but it should be a hoot to play with!

You should do a video on how to pick up girls using amateur radio.
