- TG&Y was a five and dime, or chain of variety stores and larger discount stores in the United States. At its peak, there were more than 900 stores in 29 states. Starting out during the Great Depression in rural areas and eventually moving into cities, TG&Y stores were firmly embedded in southern culture as modern-day general stores with a bit of everything. The chain used the advertising slogan, "Your best buy is at TG&Y."[1] The founders articulated their business philosophy as "...have what people want at a price they can afford to pay,"[2]

My father-in-law was the CEO of TG&Y who just turned 93 yesterday.
Yup, from Memphis! Mom took us all of the time! Loved it!
Bless their hearts, they tried to compete with Walmart, and they put up a valliant effort, but when Walmart came into central Oklahoma, TG&Y was gone within 5 years. The big TG&Y's had almost as much variety as Walmart, for example, they had a great record section, toy section, home and garden, and auto center, but as good as they were, they just couldn't compete with Walmart. My town had a "little' TG&Y and a "big" TG&Y. The little one was sort of like a drug store, only better.
TG&Y was where we would buy Christmas gifts, because it was cheap
thanks for watching
Blows me away to hear they closed in 2001? That’s crazy. I remember going there with mother in the 70’s. All of them were gone by the late 80’s here
When Ben Franklin's closed in my area, TG&Y took over the building in the late 70's. They had a good variety of things to purchase. My mom got most of her craft supplies there. My brothers and I got our records and tapes there. My dad used to get oil for the car and cleaning supplies there. The store had a little something for everyone.
thanks for sharing you memories
My first job in high school was at the TG&Y store in Lutz Florida. Went into their managment program for a few years until deciding that wasnt the kind of career I wanted. Worked at several other of their stores around Tampa area being transfered around. I really enjoyed working there-always a fun enviroment.
I don’t remember seeing any of these stores as a kid,or have even heard of this store before.I do remember McCrory’s though. Thanks Eric!.😎
I’ll always remember going to TG&Y with mom. Thanks for your video.
thanks for sharing your memories and for watching
To the best of my knowledge I do recall TG&Y out in California as I'm not sure I remember any in Illinois
There, was a TG&Y located on 23 Mile Road and D.W.Seaten, between I-94 Freeway and Jefferson in Chesterfield, Michigan. In, a strip mall, TG&Y was an anchor store and a Kroger Store was the other anchor store. The, former TG&Y store is a Champion Health Club Fitness Gym, and the former Kroger Store is now a Salvation Army Thrift Store.
thanks for sharing those nice memories
I was just thinking about this store, a few days ago. My nearest store, in Baton Rouge, was open into the 1990s. I remember that, because I used to go there to buy packs of Star Trek trading cards, when I was in college. I still have my incomplete collection book of them, somewhere.
Very interesting to read your post.
I am a native and lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, LA.
Grew up in 1950's and '60's.
(Just turned 70)
Purchased ALL of my school supplies at T.G.&Y.
Loved the original "5 cent to 1.00 dollar" stores. Most of them eventually were expanded to TG&Y Family Centers.
As a kid, the "penny candy" display could drive one crazy deciding what assortment you'd select for a nickel or dime (alot of money in those days).
We used to joke that TG&Y stood for "Toys, Guns & YoYos"!
Greatly miss TG&Y, and all the great "Five and Dime" variety stores. RIP.
Shopping at one in old downtown Lee's Summit, Missouri with mom for day to day things and for back to school shopping in the 70s.
thanks for sharing those memories
All my model car kits came from tg&y when I was a child. I could go there with $5 of my allowance and get a car and the paint. Today the paint is $5.
thanks for sharing that
Do I! There were three TG&Y stores in my hometown: the original downtown one--which had a lunch counter--and two smaller stores that were located in suburban areas. (The suburban stores outlived the downtown location by a good many years.) They always had lots of toys, and a pretty decent record section as well.
thanks for sharing your memories
There was a TG&Y back in Wichita Kansas, the good old 80's. Defininitely liked it as much as the Gibsons or Kmart.
thanks for sharing your memories
I went there in crystal river FL as a child
My grandpa retired as senior vice president of TG&Y store operations in 1985.
very nice

Hi to you too my friend

Hmmmm, that means young was the youngest.
Like Neil Young was in CSN&Y!🤣🤣🤣
Please stop adding background music to your videos. It takes away from the video. The level is not too loud but I find so distracting I miss half of what was said
Down voted for background music.
I'm sorry that you feel that way. I have lowered the background music to a lower volume but I figured you would rather listen to that rather than here my kids or pets making noise in the background. If you have kids, then I'm sure you would understand. Thanks for watching
Since you find the background music distracting, check out this video: ruclips.net/video/oWFJQ9M8xvo/видео.html
Comeback to me and tell me what you think.
