We've been to Alaska many times, driving twice from New York State.. The first trip was from New York State in 1971 in my 1967 Land Rover Series IIa, the Alaska highway was gravel the whole way. Forty years later we did it with a Mercedes ML500 pulling our 20" Airstream and the highway was paved and markedly improved. There was still a section that was very tough, right before the AK line. Alaska is great, you'll love it.

Beautiful trip. We are planning to do the same in 2023 with our Sprinter 4x4. In our many trips we noticed that fuel economy worsens substantially with speed, front wind and type of tires. At 60mph, with highway tires and no front wind, our Sprinter shows 22mpg, at 80mph it makes 16mpg (our Sprinter is much lighter than the Revel). In addition, off road tires will decrease the mpg by approx 10% compared to regular tires(most of the time we use Michelin Agilis Cross Climate). When in need, just drive slowly and the range will increase by up to 30%. We had to do it a few times.

About 50 feet from where you parked in downtown Billings to walk the dogs is a decent level 2 charger in the Wells Fargo parking garage. They are the first few parking spots right inside and cost $2.5 per hour for 10kW. It is some of the only public charging in downtown Billings.

If you’re not familiar with diesel, your engine is turbo diesel, and it will need to cool for a few minutes every time you drive it under boost.Oil is what cools the turbocharger so as soon as you shut it off-the oil starts cooking inside the turbo. The turbo temp is usually two to three time the water temp,so as high as 800 degrees easily.Letting it idle sends oil through the turbo from the oil pan-which cools it.Very important. Also,Never go further than 5K between oil changes-oil filter technology is the same as it was 60 years ago-paper media inside the oil filters get clogged after 3-5K,and even with synthetic-when the filter quits working-you engine is forced to eat filthy carbon rich oil.Never a good thing if you want your timing chain to stay together.Ask me how I know..I see this ALL the time.

Update 1 year later: You're not gonna see en masse EV charging stations on the Alaska highway anytime soon. Since this video aired, a lot has changed. And not for the better regarding EV's.
