  • We are going to start on a new project while we wait for parts to continue our Stuart beam engine project. This is a really nice little 6cc hit and miss engine that we're going to "make our own". The plan is to build an engine cart with a steerable front truck, slow this little engine down, and a few other things along the way. Thank you all for watching and subscribing, if you are enjoying this channel and the content, please consider clicking the subscribe button and to be notified of new videos click the bell icon. Hi steam 212. Just bought this engine for myself for Christmas and used the Steam 212 discount. Looking forward to playing with it and thanks for all of your videoes on it. Actualy had a Scmidts chilled cylinder 3 hp back in the 1970s. Bought Zippo lighter fluid to run it and have been using blue 3 in one for a long time Cheers!

    You could possibly trade the yellow ignition with one of the small black ignition modules tucked under the wooden bases the EM series come on. You could replace the battery box with AAA so they would be easier to hide in the cart. I think you can cut the hall sensor off those black modules and replace it with the contacts on this engine, although I haven't tried that.
    Yours sounds a lot like mine and ThomasPCGuru's engines before we modified them. That governor is very realistic to the full size, but needs a lot of work in this size to get slower operation.

    That is very neat. If you hooked up 12V generator to it, how many amps could you get?

    Where did you screw the ground plug on yours?

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Год назад +2

      I grounded it by removing one head bolt and putting the ring terminal on it and reinstalling the head bolt.

      @@steam212 Thanks, would it be able to go under one of the four base mounting screws? I don't know a lot about grounding an engine.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Год назад +2

      @@SteamEngines-Jim Absolutely, as long as the engine is grounded it shouldn't matter. I'll have to go out to the shop and take a look as to where I finally decided to ground it after I mounted it to the cart.

    The hit and miss mechanism on these engines so badly let's them down.
    Aesthetically, they blow away the eachine/Microcosm engines, but in their favour, the hit and miss works as it should.

    Thank you

    • @steam212
      @steam212  8 месяцев назад +1

      Absolutely, It is a Mk 1 Crestworth traction engine lamp made in England in the 60's & 70's. I made a video on it on the channel if you wanted to see it a bit more in-depth?

    How many turns should the needle valve bd turned out. Thanks Chris

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Год назад +1

      Hi Chris, mine is set just under 1 turn out (7/8th) but I can't be sure that all engines will be the same. Especially when it comes to fuel tank mounting and governor setting. But that should get you in the ballpark

    Forgive my lack of lnowledge, but how does the engine know when to hit and when to miss??? 😉👍

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Год назад +2

      Hi David, The short answer is through the governor, when the engine reaches a set speed the flyweights on the governor will activate the hold open latch on the exhaust pushrod causing the engine to coast or miss, once the speed has slowed down and the flyweights on the governor return the hold open latch releases allowing the exhaust pushrod to close and the engine to fire again or hit. I will be sure to include a better explanation and some visual examples of this process in the next video. Thank you for a great question and thank you for watching 👍

    I have four of these Chinese Hit and Miss engines and they all run very well but for this model. I do not recommend this engine for first time buyers.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Год назад +2

      Hi Willie, I understand exactly what you're saying, but for someone who has some experience with how these engines operate (full size) and does not have access to a lathe and a mill, I think this is a great start especially if you're like me and love to tinker with them. I could be wrong, but I've never had any scale engine that was 100% right directly out of the box. I'm sure that I will get a bunch of flak for saying this but, If companies like Stirlingkit didn't offer these engines for sale I'm afraid that the passion of model engines would slowly but surely die out especially with the younger generation. It only takes a spark to ignite the curiosity and desire to keep model steam and gas engines running. Myself I would rather be figuring out how to make something run properly than to figure out how to beat the next level on a video game.

      The full sized ones are extremely reliable and worked very well for the applications for which they were designed. At trade shows, you will commonly see ones over 100 years old still chugging happily along. I know some rural farmers who still use them.
