Hey Evan. So I detail professionally. When compound sticks to the paint it is because you’re creating too much heat (speed is too fast and movement is too slow, or your moving too slow with slow speed, or too much pressure not allowing pad to spin will cause this along with a couple other things) When using wool or microfiber pads you will get haze because you’re using a buffing compound which is aggressive so you can cut into the deeper scratches, swirls, and imperfections. Subaru has hard clear which makes it a little harder to remove scratches. But basically you’ll want to do a 2 step. I like microfiber pads with whatever compound you want to use and then follow behind with a light polish and polishing pad which will restore the gloss and get rid of any haze. Glad you’re giving the STI the much needed love. My jaw dropped when you picked the car up because of how dirty that guy let it get.
@@LukBacca you are going to need to get license and bonded and a llc first then your going to either need a buisness credit card or have cash to buy products then you will need to fine customers charge a good price and remember you have to pay taxes on all money you make at the end of the year, keep all receipts for taxes..other than that you need to DO IT and not get in your own way…..simple
Evans advice always helps me out of dark times also awesome detailing and I like how you went full in depth in the process not a lot of RUclipsrs show the full process like you do ❤️
dude you really knocked it out of the park with this one. the voiceovers were incredibly helpful and really laid it all out there for someone like me with minimal experience. thank you for this!!
I lowkey want more detailing videos, something about them so satisfying man seeing the results never gets old, awesome job Evan! So happy the sti is back man started watching you from back then and seeing that car back now it’s insane
What’s insane is I found your channel when you first had this car and watched for a couple years and then re found you again for this video gna try and stay up to date now miss this content
Have to be aware of the residue build up when removing a lot of the clear. It builds up in the pad and then just gets spread around, could be to blame for the haze you saw. In Between small areas, you should be using compressed air or a tool to remove the product and clear from the pad and it’ll help the finish come along faster
I also find with the surface prep, that if you rinse from bottom to top, and top to bottom after, it will make the product work more efficiently. Love that stuff
Awesome in depth detail of how to PROPERLY detail, i do this exact process with my own Hatchback and man oh man does it make the paint POP! And shine like it’s brand spanking new, keep up the amazing work and positive energetic Evan. Love it!
Evan, I want to begin by saying this was a good informative video showing what even a DIY level detail can do to turn around a tired, neglected car. Your skills and knowledge are impressive for a self-taught person and I like how you encourage people to have a go and explain your process. I’d like to share a few tips as I own a detailing business myself and I feel a few tips and tricks could really turn someone of your skills into someone who can get a next level result. If I missed something when watching or it was done off camera please disregard but some friendly advice I will try to keep succinct to not bore you: Prep work: Prep, prep prep. Much the same as actually painting a car, with detailing your prep work is the foundation for a good result. I can speak for Griots if they make an iron decontaminating product, but seeing the video of the car with the high spots and contamination in that paint, I feel an iron and tar decontamination could have benefitted greatly prior to the clay bar and would have assisted with leaving less imperfections as a result of the clay. Whilst the clay is the first step, myself and many detailers believe strongly in not making more work for ourselves! Masking and removing parts that could be in the way: I understand it’s a big job and most DIYers don’t want to half disassemble their cars during a detail. That being said, some items are a quick removal process that make the job significantly easier and the result way better! For example, your window washing jet. I noticed in the video (and I apologise if this was later touched up) the area around the jets was still dull and somewhat swirled. A quick removal of these would have let you stay flat and go over the holes for the jets and not make these particular parts stand out. It also reduces the risk of the plastic of the jets (which break down as a car ages) contaminating your pad and consequently your paint when correction! Which brings me to masking - always mask your black plastics, rubbers and any other surface that could contaminate your pad, or in your rubbers case end up going white from polish contaminating the rubber surface. Process: I noted you started super aggressive without checking the paint depth. The risk here is reduced with experience and likely in the STI’s case was pulled off without issue, however in detailing we always start at the least abrasive method and work our way up. No need to remove more clear coat than necessary when a less aggressive pad and compound combo can get the job done. Subaru’s in particular have a very soft clear coat (soft in the detailing world being it’s super easy to cut scratches and imperfections out with a correction - anyone who has worked on a Subaru, then examples such as a Corvette or Mercedes with ceramic-clear can attest you’ll have far more fun and need a far less abrasive method for Subaru clear). Your ‘sticky’ feeling when cutting stems from a) going very aggressive and building up heat in the panel, as well as an enthusiastic amount of product. Whilst your abrasive cutters will always be harder to wipe than your polishes or final steps, it never should take two hands rubbing hard to remove if temperature and product amounts are managed. Particularly with Subaru, they can quite easily be subject to further marks if the wiping process is too difficult (which as you likely discovered can at least be mitigated with the later levels of correction). I’d recommend experimenting with less product and seeing the results you can make with less product - not only is wiping easier, but you also can “see through” the product better to see your correction process as you buff. Finally, not to step on your toes, but a friendly disagreement - focussing on the panels that catch light is a bit of a misnomer as light will catch on every panel depending on light source and angles. I highly recommend - painful though it may be - try to create as uniform a result as possible over the entire car as you never know when the light will catch on an area that hasn’t had as much love and attention. That being said - this is probably from a perspective of providing a result to a paying customer and not a DIYer working on their own vehicles. Hopefully some friendly advice can help with your future details as even with your experience, we are always learning and developing. It’s great to see someone encouraging DIYers to have a crack and show what results can be achieved with consumer level products. Great video and keen to see the build and progress of the STI!
1 step correction is almost impossible with paint that bad. Compound first and it'll leave the hazing. Finishing polish after to remove that hazing and the paint will look flawless. 👌 love that you're one of the few channels that details their own cars
Evan dude I’m so proud and happy of you been here since like 100k subscribers I’ve missed this STI so much I’m so happy you got it back!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m still trying to get a Subaru, currently have a 2011 3.5L Camry Se lowered and I can’t wait to get me a Subaru as a project car 🥹
this was a really good video. This is making me miss my new BRZ more and more. I got hit by a semi a few months ago and its almost back in my hands, but damn.. I love the sound of a Subaru!
I live a few blocks away from Griots flagship store. Used your promo code a few times on online orders. To bad a distracted driver took out my baby. Havnt had any car therapy for over a month.
I’m all for using good detailing products, always have been. But this is not the result of “cheap” detailing products.. this is the result of someone not taking care of their cars paint properly.. IE washing with a brush, automatic brush car washes, cleaning car in direct sunlight, not using the 2-bucket method, using dirty rags, and the list goes on and on..
Damn Evan that car turned out soo good! It is actually one of my favourite cars on the channel and the reason I subscribed many years ago. Love to see it back!
Hi. I don’t regularly follow your content, but on and off I do. And I did recall seeing videos you’ve made of your STI from many years back. I was, and prolly somewhat still is, in a similar situation as you were when you had the car as a much younger you. Congratulations on getting your car back. I’m glad I watched this video as I did, and I just wanna say, thanks for the advices you’ve included towards the end.
Man been a few years since I been on this channel, last time you were still in Texas if I remember correctly, working out of a garage with the bright yellow evo with your mini lift haha, awesome to see how much you’ve levelled up man amazing to see, congrats on all the success bro ! Nice to see the family still doing great congrats on the kid man.
You’re probably not gonna read this but I was just wondering step-by-step what products did u use and what pads you use for them or what pads I should use depending on my paint
I remember learning about detailing when I was 15 from evans videos, I would watch it then go wash my parents cars and pretend I had a sti hatch. Smurfin wrx and even were the first car people I followed
I've been waiting so long for you to get this car back! This is the car that helped me learn manual, and want an STI! N I have one of my own! This video is going to be great!
Hey Evan I went to auto zone and got most of Groits products and the buffer and pads and the polish because I remember all your videos on there products and I tell you now your 100 percent correct great great product I'm hooked definitely going to use your code on some more products on there site.
The crazy part is that the first video I ever watched of you was how to debadge that car and i was obsessed with sti hatchbacks and I got one of my own 3 years ago and now you got urs back so freaking awesome can’t wait to see more content
its funny you mention influencers and their promoted products, but i will say, when i used griots wheel cleaner the first time, hoooooly shit was i impressed. i now have a trunk full of their products for all the best paint corrections and detail work. i love griots, and theyre local! never knew it till you mentioned them ages ago
I'll be real with you, I started watching you when you got this car and then your stuff didn't pop on my feed anymore. you popped back up yesterday when you bought this car back and I'm excited to watch this and love your daily quotes it helps me go through a bunch of stuff as well man I appreciate you
Glad to see your car coming back to this condition! Those products are all amazing! It's what i use at home and my neighbors ask me to detail their cars next lol
Ok, here's the secret to keep Subaru fog light covers on...grab some 3M double sided outdoor tape and run it from the inside of the bumper to at least 3-4 places in the inside of the fog light cover while leaving on the red backing. Problem solved.
18:00 maybe try a slower speed. the panel is heating up too fast and gets too hot so the polish is sticky. and pad blow out is very important. might be the reason for the hazy/inconsistent finish
Friendly Tip from a 20 year Paint Pro: You're going too fast for that tool. Work the product in more, and go a little slower. The haze and product wipe off will be much easier. Great video though. Just found your channel. Wasn't expecting a 41 minute griots commercial! HAHA JK JK! Keep it up!
I'd love to see the glc with matching painted or wrapped lower bumpers. Curious to see how much better the car would look. Also thin multispoke brushed silver wheels on that. Personally not a big fan of the mirrorpolished black wheels German brands sell, like on all gti's stock.
I remember first watching your channel when this car was first introduced, granted helped me decide going with the same Enkei wheels! Unfortunately, I can't say I've been a full-time watcher, but I'm stoked to see what's in store for the subie!
I'm glad it's back! Us OG's needed it!!!! Congrats bro!
Seeing the car made me remember everything I wanted to do as a kid

Would rather change pads on the fly
Evan literally talks like he's watched a couple detailing videos on RUclips, polished a car and now thinks he's a semi-pro detailer.
Love that you point out a lot of misconceptions and all the in between little details about detailing a car.

I definitely think it would improve the look if you removed those door ding protectors. Love the detail videos man!
Those door ding guards actually look good, but they're easy to remove honestly.
Yeah I think it gives the car a nice line to it.
I also find with the surface prep, that if you rinse from bottom to top, and top to bottom after, it will make the product work more efficiently. Love that stuff

Is nice to see that car back, Evan’s car is the first Subaru I like, I remember playing Need for Speed 2015 with a red Sti hatchback
when you get a haze it means that your pad is clogged try to blow it out more often and work smaller areas
Glad to see it back! This is the reason I bought a wrx hatch back in the day and still own it today!

Would be interesting to see a video of all the major competitors products to show how each stands up
I'd like to see Sonax in the mix
I remember this car! Awesome to see it back
Now really detail the inside this was so worth to watch I learn ❤❤❤
Those swirls look like it was taken through a car wash almost every day, thats what almost all the rental cars we get look like
here for the sti journey
The OG car is back
LET'S BRING BACK THE OG INTRO😂❤
The Garage Door Tech nerd in me loves the Liftmaster 8500W’s😅
Wild dude had the balls to ask 35k for that thing. The AUDACITY
Surprised you don't use an IPA spray to clean off the compound/polishes. Makes it much easier to remove the extra product that causes the haze.
So you’re saying it’s not suppose to be hard to rub the excess compound off?
So glad it’s back! We need the old fart fart vroom intro back for this car
Chemical Guys and Griots are my go to cleaning brands both do amazing jobs
I can remember watching the video of you paint correcting it when you first got it. Damn time sure does fly
The guy wasn’t lying when he said he hasn’t done nothing to it💀
"No disrespect to the last owner but fxxk that dingus" lol
Please never get rid of this car again . I’ve been here since the og days
